Tomb Raider exclusivity fallout thread *spawn

they had already decided on a sequel right after it was done, and they had the money to do a remaster but apparently not to do a new game? They said a few months ago they had the funding and backing of SE to go forward with their next projects, they have other projects hitting other consoles.

No you are not:

It seems like there is a big confusion on this Crystal Dynamics/Microsoft deal for "Rise of the Tomb Raider". Geoff Keighley has stated on Twitter that he talked to many at Xbox booth and they are saying Microsoft is not the publisher of the game and listing on web is an error:

"Trying to get more clarity on Tomb Raider. Xbox tells me Microsoft Studios is not publishing game and listing on web is an error."

Microsoft is actually publishing the next Tomb Raider and NOT Square Enix. So it's quite likely that Square Enix did not deem it financially feasible to develop the next Tomb Raider to the same degree as the previous one.
I recall Square Enix (SE) were muttering a lot about Tomb Raider (2013) not meeting their sales expectations although by most standards of sales it did pretty well. It sold 3-4 million in the first month and SE said they expected double that.

Perhaps the development was prolonged (=expensive) or their expectations were too high. It was certainly very polished as though it had been in development a long time.

There's still some confusion in the media, no one is really sure if it's a timed exclusive.... as usual.

That's what they get for their reputation I guess. Even if it was a real exclusive, no one would believe them. The boy who cried wolf and all that.

Yeah I posted this could backfire over in the game forum. Because quite a few games have been declared as 'exclusive' then released on another platform later on, they'll be plenty non-Xbox owners who will wait it out in hope and not buy an Xbox One.

If it never appears on PC or PlayStation 4, by the time they've waited long enough, enthusiasm may well have waned anyway.

If it IS truly exclusive, then well, I guess thats that  . Its alright, but SE lost a fan. It was a sure buy from my side, after TRDE. I think they lost a lot of fans. All I can hope is the money does them good but in my opinion a company needs fans in the longer run.

But then you know how fickle gamers are. We will all be back on board the moment they announce a multiplat sequel. I just wish it wasn't on X360 too. They should focus on next gen now, but I guess the X360 install base must have made them feel secure in this deal.

But then, how many will care for a 360 in 2015? Its a weird deal, unless CD was in real financial trouble. Best of luck to them ! But I still believe it will come to PC, for sure.

I can understand people being upset a little about this announcement, but to completely disavow Square Enix because of it is ridiculous. Does everyone boycotting Square Enix realize they will be giving up Final Fantasy and countless other wonderful games they have given us over the years. So many people are overreacting to this.
It's like no company has ever gotten a 3rd party exclusiove before. Infact 3rd party exclusives built the Playstation 1. They were mandatory on the NES and there are many of them on the original Xbox as well.

People make a lot of noise. Basically animal posturing adapted to the 'civilised' world. Like various public figures getting death threats, but they never happen because the people doing the talking are going through a dumb ritual rather than actually describing their future intentions.

Emotions are high now. They'll have normalised in a spell and everyone will be back to buying the games they like from whomever provides them.

Thanks for taking a game from me, MS.

Oh well. Hopefully it's timed (sounds like it).

But Activision/Sony offering PS owners timed exclusive content for Destiny is much worse, right eastmen?

Yes , because they wont try to sell you a gimped verison of the game unlike what destiny is doing. Would you be happy if Tomb Raider came to the ps4 and had missing content you could only ever get on the xbox one ? Would you buy that copy on ps4 ? I know I wouldn't

Apples and oranges. Totally different situation and not a fair comparison.
Xbox owners will still get those DLC content down the line.
At the moment we aren't even sure the new TR is permanent or timed exclusive.

Lol.

Oh so its not Sony paying to have content kept away from PC/Xbox owners ? Its the same thing but Sony is getting a pass and people are upset with MS. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander

Stealing games vs stealing content... which is worse? Destiny isn't gimped on XB1. Owners still get to experience the core game... they just have to wait for some additional content that in no way affects the core experience. You're delusional if you think timed exclusive content is worse than missing the game entirely.

No one would be this upset if the Xbox were getting exclusive DLC content.
Exclusive DLC contents are rarely good to begin with.

I've decided that I support exclusives completely, because it makes adults act like sulking babies on the Internet, judging from some other forums I've been looking at. It's worth it to witness the public embarrassment these people bring upon themselves.

Indeed.
