PS3 Firmware 2.20

I'll give that a go.
@ fallguy - what do you call it when updating the firmware stops a function working and that's not addressed in the documentation? By my dictionary that's a bug ;)

Still missing MKV support Sony, pull your fingers out ;)

I'd love to see it to, but for some reason I do not think that we will get this soonish.
Although if some entity started to verify and certify MKV capable devices and also provide "plugin" code for embedded platforms you might actually get it :)

And still waiting on FLAC support. I don't get that portion. With DiVX/XViD that cost money, it should be a no brainer to implement FLAC support.

Wouldn't this be the same problem as with MKV, there is no entity that can approve/certify that they are FLAC a-ok.
Which I believe you get with MPEG, DiVX, WMA etc

My understanding is that MKV and FLAC are different at the core of what they provide. FLAC is a lossless compression technique where as MKV is a container. Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

I would think its no different than enabling AAC, MP3, or ATRAC support.

Yes MKV is just a container though one that can hold just about any type of video/audio & supports interactive menus though no-one has implemented that (there was some prototype stuff on Doom9 once).

There is a standard of sorts for MKV, the pirates standard is the simplest way of branding it (but there is an actual name & spec) just like they had their standards for XviD in AVI which was adopted by a large number of DVD players there is a new standard that uses H.264/AC3/AAC with MKV as the container.

Some more obscure devices already support this new standard like the products from Tvix but as to Sony or Microsoft supporting it is anyone's guess. I for one never thought MS/Sony would ever support Divx/XviD yet they did so never say never...

In regards the 2.20 firmware the subs support is very nice though unlike others I have not noticed any improvements in regards DivX compatibility everything for me that did not play before still does not so I do not think there have been any significant changes.

Theres no entity that can certify AVI-Support either. Partial support would be a start.
Besides if you look at PSP`s MP4-Video Playback capabilities you will see that they are very incomplete aswell (You can playback 720x480 Videos, Videos smaller than 480x272 but nothing between).

Regarding the DivX /XviD support, I can confirm that two files that did not work at all before the update now works.
That is, everything is perfect on the first one but the other one has working video, but scrambled audio.

Also, there was a file that used to halt for a second at some point. Now it runs smooth all the way.

I'm excited to see BDLive incorporated into the PS3, as I plan on getting on this summer (a large component being the blu-ray player itself).

It's hard to beat the PS3 blu-ray drive. While the controls are somewhat clumsy, the menu isn't the greatest either, and it will not output HDMI and Optical at the same time, the drive itself does 1080p, upscaling, has a great picture overall, and it even ejects and loads disc fast, if that is something you care about.

All of this wrapping into a nice neat gaming/dvd package that just now has seriously become interesting.

I'm somewhat skeptical of BDLive nonetheless, as Xboxlive has such a strong community already, including a huge library of downloadable games.

MkV support would be the next big thing IMO. Right now I'm converting all my mkv files to vob in order to be playable on the ps3 through dlna... It's not bad, but it's time consumming when you need to transcode the video with subs...

Yes, but I am sure the divx guys will tell sony that avi's like this are a'okay, while avi's like that is a no no. Ie they just try to conform to the divx guys first which probably covers 90% of all legal files. Then they can start to look at corner cases.

The Divx compatibility is pretty good, I am happy with it. It plays all the stuff that I encoded for the last couple years. For my case some of the older files that doesn't play or played with stuttering were because of the audio. Basically I re-encoded the audio and streamed copy the video and they worked.

BTW any of you guys ever try encoding to H264 on the PS3 via Linux ? How fast is the process with Cell ?

Over on Three Speech they have a pretty nice list of features that need help in the upcoming XMB update. If they can get at least 50% of these fixed in 2.4 I know many of us will be pretty pleased:

1) Better handling of headsets
2) A better way of displaying any waiting messages
3) Fix USB devices
4) Quicker media access
5) DNLA server
6) Pre-loading of PSN network games
7) More integration of the PSP
8) Greater codec and container support
9) RSS feeds
10) Media folders

I'd like them in this order: 4,3,8,2,1

Of course we are leaving out in game friend access and soundtrack support! Those are at the top!

4,3,2,1 for me ! Although for 3, I have a more general request. USB drives and network drives should be treated uniformly as the internal HDD. Right now, there is no way to save to a network file server (DLNA doesn't support writing).

They should also fix the stuttering problem if it is a new bug introduced in 2.20.
