PS3 Firmware 1.80 - PS/PS2/DVD upscaling, DLNA and more!

aye. getting the word out. http://www.gameswank.com/content/view/157/1/

"But more exciting is the ability to access your PC through DLNA server stremaing to your PS3, and then through remote play all the way back to your PSP. You can now access all your movies (whatever they may be), pictures, and music streaming from your PC to your PS3 and to your PSP, anywhere in the world!"

fun. No PSP for me though

Regards BRD movies, these can't be sent to PSP, right? Can they be ripped? If not, all those HD movies you buy will be unstreamable, and if you want distributable media you'd be better off with DVDs.

Based on my simple tests, disc media -- BRD or DVD -- cannot be played over RemotePlay today. Only "Internet media" can do so.

With Tversity, not only can we playback personal media remotely, files on the net (e.g., podcasts) can be streamed through the same unified interface too. Granted PSP can subscribe to RSS media before 1.8, but having the playlists in 1 location for PC, PS3 and PSP is convenient.

Now if only WMV transcoding works on my machine (Gimme a simple, unified media server that doesn't rely on Windows, somebody !)

Incidentally, my GAF (Resistance) comrades have started to use PS3 chat to get-together (up to 6 at a time). I think they exchanged images (think Jessica Alba) over the session -- not sure how they did it yet since I have not tried chat.

With its HTML-like interface, the Playstation Store is also streamable to PSP but it's not fully working yet (Some layout issues). In the future, I should be able to "download" any store media remotely and play them when I get back.

We have 1-2 more months for new features like DLNA to stablize, before Playstation Home beta unifies all these pockets together.

You can always rip BD movies for "your personal use, as a backup." :) Protection on HD DVD and BD movies has been cracked for months now...

Remote Play is a truly amazing feature. I am now listening to my entire music collection on my PC, served up via WMP11/DLNA to the PS3 and streamed to my PSP at work!

Couldn't agree more ! Have you tried running the slideshow together with music playback over RemotePlay ? It's my favorite feature.

I also had background download going when doing the above. :)
Can't wait when more PS3 applications support RemotePlay (e.g., PS Store bug fix, some games, F@H, or even a PS Eye app !).

EDIT:

Has anyone tried any PS2 games that are notorious for low fps like shadow of the colossus on the PS3? I'm wondering if the PS3 emulation will improve framerate in those games...

Hi I have a question for anyone who is using ffdshow + Tversity with the PS3.

It's working great for me for every imaginable format except for avi. (xvid). These videos always play mirrored and upside down. I've looked all over the internet for a solution, but no one seems to be able to provide a clear answer.

If anyone here could give me some help on this I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
Oninotsume

I've never seen that happen myself. But there is a Flip and Mirror setting in the ffdshow video decoder configuration. Maybe you have it checked for some reason.

So is there a clear winner in terms of which media server works best? I'm having some trouble figuring out how to get my media to properly display in XMB using WMP11. I wouldn't mind trying another server.

The thing is you don't have to choose one or the other. I have both Nero and TVersity running at the same time on my PC and can access both from my PS3. You'll just see multiple DLNA device icons in the XMB.

Nero seems more reliable right now. Been using it to play mp3's mostly and it works really nice for that.

TVersity is a bit unstable and you can't count on it to even play your mp3's all the way through correctly, much less your videos. But it does seem to have wider transcoder support. I have lots of photo albums shared with TVersity and thats really nice.

TVersity seems to have the most promise going forward with regard PS3 support. Right now it is still a bit cludgy and buggy though.

Anyone have any problems with Bluray playback in 1.80?

When I play "Incubus - Alive at Red Rocks" in bluray on the PS3 w/ 1.80, the blacks are replaced with purples...unwatchable. It was fine in earlier versions.

I've tried every permutation possible with the display settings/HDMI settings, with no luck.

All other bluray discs play fine...it's funny cause the Incubus bluray is the only Sony one I have....

I played "The Devil Wears Prada" (Blu-ray) after 1.8 successfully (start-to-end). DVD playbacked well too.

Like inefficient, I'm keeping 2 DLNA servers for now (WMP 11 and Tversity).

I've had some playback issues. No image problems, just a BD-ROMdisk read error with Underworld Evolution. I took it out and put it back in and then it was fine. I have noticed some DVD's load slower taking a few more seconds to start playback.

I've figured out how to write one using FFMPEG; I'm going to do it in Java soon (next week or so) so people with Mac's can use it.

I had this problem when using the latest ffdshow, and the flip settings had no effect. Reverting to an earlier beta fixed the problem. I think it was "beta1_20061211".
