PS3 Firmware 1.80 - PS/PS2/DVD upscaling, DLNA and more!

Has anyone managed to make MKV files playable on PS3? I got a hold of the Liverpool vs Milan game on HD resolution from my friend and would like to know how to get it working?

The latest version of PS3Video9 has an MKV passthrough option which alters the AVC header to make the PS3 believe it's MP@4.1 without touching the video. The process itself isn't flawless, some videos don't work still, but it's a step in the right direction given the alternative is to re-encode the video. The latest version of PS3Video9 is kinda flakey too, and it seems there's a bug if your ac3 stream is a certain bitrate. So there's a big YMMV on how it turns out.

Thanks for this. I tried it out and it works perfect.

Hey guys. I have a Westinghouse 42inch monitor with HDMI capable of displaying up to 1080p (model #:LVM-42w2) and I seem to be having trouble upscaling PS/PS2 games or DVDs to 1080p. Whenever I try turning the option on, the screen just goes blank for 30 seconds and then just goes back to the menu screen with the option turned off. I'm currently also connected through DVI to my TV. Does anyone know why this is happening? Or maybe even what I can do about it?

Thanks a lot!

I think it depends on your firmware version, but I don't think this is normal.

Another question, which options are best for me in terms of PS2 upscaling if I'm using a widescreen HDTV and what the games to upscale and smooth? I'm rather confused by the normal/full, etc options, and just some preliminary playing around seems to yield some odd results, such as the image not going full screen.

Off - no upscaling at all (obviously)

Normal - PS3 will upscale to the highest resolution you check under the display settings. it will also keep the aspect ratio of the games. so for 4:3 games, the ps3 will add blackbars to the sides to retain the AR.

Full - same as normal, but it will stretch 4:3 games to fill the screen.

games that support Progressive scan will overwrite the upscaling if you enable it and the game will run at 480p regardless if you enable upscaling. its subjective which looks better between 480p and 480i upscaled. some think that enabling progressive scan to overwrite the upscaling produces a sharper image, whereas if you leave progressive scan off, some prefer the softer image because aliasing is less apparent.

as for the smoothing option, this is also subjective. it does clean up the jaggies, but in turn, removes detail and does exactly what it sounds like it would do.

If my PC has a TV card, video capture card or a webcam, is there a way to stream from any of these sources to PSP over the internet? Thanks.

The whole discussion over what looks better when is quite funny to me. Apart from that it depends largely on the size of your TV (on my 32" LCD a number of games really look loads better with Full Screen upscaling and Smoothing, the latter being essential really), it reminds me of the arguments I used to have about why some old Xbox games could never look as good as some of the PS2 games, because I seem to remember the gforce3 type GPU in the Xbox always had some kind of smoothing going on, a complaint I believe that people also had with gforce3 hardware on the PC (fixed in the gforce4 chipset).

The truth is somewhere in between of course, as is clear from this discussion too. For some stuff smoothing looks better, for others it doesn't (and there are even personal differences in taste). It's good to have the option, anyway.

If your TV has the option to display 1080i, try unchecking that resolution in the PS3 XMB. This should leave you with only 480p, 720p, and 1080p. I have no idea why, but I was getting the same problem as you until I did that on my Samsung.

Anyone have any problems with Bluray playback in 1.80?

When I play "Incubus - Alive at Red Rocks" in bluray on the PS3 w/ 1.80, the blacks are replaced with purples...unwatchable. It was fine in earlier versions.

I've tried every permutation possible with the display settings/HDMI settings, with no luck.

All other bluray discs play fine...it's funny cause the Incubus bluray is the only Sony one I have....

This has been fixed in 1.81. Before, even if I set the color space to RGB, apparently some bluray discs were sent in YbPb...

Now it stays in the correct colour mode.

Yeah, I'm very happy with 1.81 too in that respect. Now the PS3 stays in RGB Full mode all the time, and boy does it look good on my TV! With the same level of brightness I had before, the blacks now stay black. It's a huge difference! I didn't know the TV had it in him! :)

Good News

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/06/26/firmware-182-coming-soon/
Hey everyone, you told us you wanted to hear about updates a few days in advance, so here’s a quick heads up that we have a PS3 firmware update in the works. Scheduled for release in the next few days, firmware 1.82 is an update that enables the playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files. As most of you know, these are high quality files that you’ll now be able to play on your PS3. Hopefully this update is moving us closer to the audio playback features many of you commented about in my post the other week. We’re continuing to evaluate and improve things across the board, including PS2 software compatibility. I’ll chime in here quickly with an update once the firmware is live and ready. Thanks for all of your support and feedback, keep it coming!

I don't think I need to comment much further. This is EXCELLENT.

I've been playing high-definition MPG4 files that say AVC on them for a while now. They are 720p and converted from mkv by way of PS9video.

I was under the impression that it already supported AVC and it does,,, The new firmware update is refering to "AVC High profile".. Looks to me that it's different profiles within "AVC"..

Mpeg4 profiles is a bit confucing,,, Anyone got a link that describes he different profiles ?.
