80GB PS3 SKU coming soon?

I agree that peripherals are usually a way to "charge the hell out" of the consumer, the HD camera may not be the best example.....This fall I think Sony will have at least one "stripped down" SKU that will aim for the more price-consious consumers.

Yeah they might package something extra, maybe even an extra controller (we wish). I think it's a good idea that Sony has a lesser sku but from the signals they have sent, they will not follow that model for long. I recall them only planning on one in the first place but changing late in the game. I'm guessing that two skus will last until the first price cut.

I think that was just a FUD comment about Microsoft having two SKUs with/without HD after E3 2005.

I think it's very possible Sony will have one expensive fully featured SKU that actually gives some revenue and one stripped down subsidized SKU which will help push the volumes they so badly need.

Could definitely work so we'll see. Out of curiousity, how do you think they will differentiate the two skus?

side note: Probably doesn't mean a thing, but the Sony website only sells 60GB skus.

Not much point speculating, but the cheap one may possibly be similar to "current" the 20GB with the cheapest possible HD solution, whatever it may be (minimum 20 GB).
I don't rule out the possibility that there will be 3 SKUs available at the same time where the current 60 GB sku will be placed in the middle pricewise, until it´s been sold out.

Em... I was thinking... whatever their plans are, why don't they send in a bunch of models for FCC to test (Why only 80Gb ? Why not 100Gb, 120Gb, ..., 250Gb). How much does it cost ?

That way SCE doesn't have to reveal their plans, and can argue that they are doing this to test on behalf of users who swap their hard disks. Otherwise, we will see more rumors/leaks like this in the future.

They need to stop worrying about the HDD space. Most people who are interested in using their PS3 as a multimedia machine will figure out how to go out and buy a 3rd party drive.
They need to start focusing on getter a faster BD-ROM drive in the machine.

This would be a deal breaker for early adopters.

For HDD upgrade, if the rumors is true I guess it's a way for sony to keep the price hight and not to bleed to much money.

Not that it's 80GB, but:

Sony Shares Rise on Report Profit to Exceed Estimates (Update3)

By Masaki Kondo and Yoshinori Eki

April 13 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of Sony Corp., the world's second-largest consumer electronics maker, rose to a two-month high after the Nikkei reported operating profit this fiscal year will beat analysts' estimates on Bravia television sales.

...

Sony will stop selling the 20-gigabyte PlayStation 3 model in North America, and will only offer the 60-gigabyte version, said Satoshi Fukuoka, a Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. spokesman in Tokyo, confirming a separate Nikkei report.

`Consumer Needs'

``It's in line with our strategy as we had planed to choose models based on consumer needs,'' Fukuoka said. The larger model, which retails for $599 in the U.S. and is $100 more expensive than the smaller version, accounts for about 90 percent of sales, he said.

The company is also considering introducing the model with a bigger hard disk, Fukuoka said, without providing details.

If it's the same or lower price point then great, but they should really concentrate on reducing the price more than putting in a paltry 20GB storage increase.

Since it's based on the EU model, it already has several cost savings over the US/JP 60GB model. A couple chips got a die shrink, and the PS2 EE+XDR was removed completely.

Also there is probably very little difference as far as manufacturing costs between 60 and 80GB - same number of platers and moving parts, just a higher density field the disc, maybe a slightly more expensive head.

And who knows what other changes they made. Maybe the 65nm Cell is going to be in this one. I would not be surprised if this Korean SKU is actually the least expensive SKU yet in terms of BOM. To the consumer it is $50 cheaper than the US version, and has a bigger HD anyway.

Maybe they knew that in Korea a lot of these system are going to be bought up by Internet cafe's and gaming lounges. So they wanted to put in a larger HD to be more accommodating of multiple users.

It is interesting that the price point is almost exactly $550. Because I have been suspecting that if they did drop the price, they would do it by $50. I expect the $600 SKU will become $550 this year. And then just maybe, the 20GB SKU will make a return toward the end of the year with an even more affordable price point for the holiday buyers.

I think they get the 80GB drive cheaper than the 60GB, i wouldn´t be surprised if it would cost the manufactor more to keep a line running with 60GB drives when the demand for 80GB is higher.

Thanks, very interesting!

This probably means that the BC software for NTSC is up to snuff and should be ready for introduction in Japan and NA soon as well.
As they have 2 million units in the inventory I expect the introduction after summer, maybe with a price cut.

i might look into 80GB model. it is way cheaper than 425GBP one and it gives you more value for money! and i only play games so it won't be a problem. ;)

and i am going there next summer, so...

Coincidence. The price point is what you get from current Jpn Price + Korea import tax.

You're forgetting that Jpn PS3 has been selling for ~500$ for 6 months now. HK had it even cheaper then that.
Not arguing about the price drop happening in general - but I don't think you can extrapolate it from this.

Maybe they knew that in Korea a lot of these system are going to be bought up by Internet cafe's and gaming lounges.
It'll be a nice replacement for all the broken 360s in those places (only half kidding, I've seen more then a fair share of malfunctioning units in public now).
