Xbox Series S [XBSS] (Lockhart) General Rumors and Speculation *spawn*

My assumption is that in year 3 or 4 another Series X console will come out & i will be just called Series X too, but there will be a different model # that won't show prominently on the box. Series X will always be the flagship device. Series S(or whatever it's called) might be the budget SKU. Who knows? Then they could have another series for portable/mobile SKU or another series just for VR. They area all called Xbox, but different Series will have different targets.

That makes sense if the Series is going to be over time. Perhaps the idea is to do away with numbers and just have Series X (2022 edition) for the main box, Series S for the lower tier model, and Series Z or something for a super elite tier, kinda like Samsung has the A and S tablets, and Sony has the Xperia XA and XZs (Xperia XZ as a product name, for reals??).

The next gen is just called xbox.
And you have different series within it.
So a series X
And a series S

Yes, but it isn't exactly a series if it's only one machine. I've always figured a Lockhart based console (assuming there is one) is just part of Series X. I mean the fact that it's Xbox Series X is the one of the main reasons I think a Lockhart based console is a possibility.

Now granted perhaps Series X is to denote a series of consoles released consecutively into the future. IE - they are never going to change the name of that tier of console again. But I find this doubtful with how much Microsoft likes to play with the name of new consoles. :p

you will get microsoft platform exclusive games. Microsoft doesn't care what platform you play games on as long as its theirs.

Completely. Wasteland 3 was, until about two weeks ago, being advertised for release on linux and Mac but the support page stealthily dropped those platforms and the devs are ignoring all queries regarding this. Wasteland 3 is a Unity game. It's difficult to believe Microsoft perceive linux and macOS a threat to the Windows gaming market but maybe they do. If not, why give up free money?

If they do that, then they are just as crappy as Epic Games. Releasing on Linux, Mac and PlayStation 4 was part of their crowdfunding. Some backers may not have a Windows PC capable of gaming or an Xbox with no plans to get them.

Simultaneously releasing to Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

If they pull that stunt, I'll bitch about them just as much as I have bitched about Epic Games over not allowing the developer to release on Steam and GOG as they had promised as part of their crowd funding push.

Considering Minecraft still gets releases and updates on other platforms, here's to hoping MS hasn't suddenly got a stick up their butt about this.

I could likely forgive them if the other platforms got delayed. At least then people on other platforms that backed the game would still be able to play it. Still crappy, but at least acceptable.

Low priority. They want the game done earlier so they are just cutting out work to reach deadlines etc. They may come back at a later time likely after release

It's not really free money as you have maintenance costs with supporting those platforms. Supporting Linux requires supporting an OS as diverse as the hardware it runs it. Supporting Mac should be quite straight forward, but I've a friend who dabbles with Unity on the Mac and he wrestles with crashes and issues quite often, so I don't know what stability is like on MacOS. Maybe the devs have struggled to maintain cross-OS PC development and in light of the limited audiences of these platforms, made the choice to focus on PC and consoles for now accounting for 90+% of the game buying population and see about ports at a later date when it looks more economically viable/proven?

I just think you'll have a series x (2020 edition) once it's to be replaced, so you could say it's the start of the series?
Or series X2, X-2, X 2, would be its replacement

I'd have thought no UHD. Gives more room for the PSU and gives it more air. And physical media is moronic landfill in this day and age.

Also, is there really room for the SSD on the back of that main board? If it's on a daughterboard, then you have to provide PCI4.0 lanes back to the APU. Wonder at the cost balance of that vs a bigger main board and case.

A taller case would be a shame though. The gaming God's surely demand a resurgence in compact cuboid consoles.

I changed up the innards. SSD in secured against the front (connected to mobo via cable), heatsink in the middle, and PSU in the back. Cool air is drawn from the sides and back and out the top.

Got any lego / duplo blocks :p j/k

What's the confidence level here that lockhart exists, do we have at least indications the SoC was actually made, or some SoC code names from apisak, komachi, ro_game, etc... ?

I just hope this is not another one of those... "slim will be odd-less a little bigger than an apple tv, the X will be 399, and there's a streaming stick". Wasting precious electrons around the world.

Dude, if you drop the block labeled "Heat" you can skimp even more on cooling... :p

I have maybe 5% confidence level that it exists as a console SKU. Of course that's based on 95% pure hope that it's a hybrid device or a semi-portable.

There were stories circulating recently about the SOC not being able to hit release this year and would have to be for a 2021 release.

Lockhart SOC is codenamed Sparkman.

Lockhart SOC is codenamed Sparkman.
And is there's info directly linking xbox and sparkman, like we had with the other codenames? Or could it equally be an AMD chip for some gaming laptop, big tablet, or nintendo wiiuu, or vita 2? (aw.. I made myself sad)
