Not really if the M is just a potable S. Devs just released games that could run on the X1, X1X, S, and X....
Seires S pulls over 60 watts in gameplay, and a portable would need a screen. I think that's the biggest challenge for a portable Series S right now. To put in context, SteamDeck draws around 15 watts.

Did not see this graph in previous posts even though it is a few months old.

Accounting for every version of the Switch (Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED), units sold declined 22.1% year-on-year to 17.97 million units. Nintendo attributed part of the decline to the shortage of semiconductors and other components that came about during the global pandemic, but it also noted that it didn't see the kind of growth in sales during the holiday season that it had in past years.

Some of this is to be expected even without a shortage of parts. The Switch is several years old and has sold very well up through this point, so it's only natural for sales growth to slow down over time. What's encouraging for Nintendo, however, is the steady growth in annual playing users.
...
The large base of users enables Nintendo to not have to be in a rush to release a next-generation product. Yes, there have been a few revisions of the Switch, the most recent being a swap to an OLED panel. But there has not been a major hardware upgrade that would boost raw performance on the handheld platform. Nintendo's strategy, then, is to keep selling as many Switch consoles as it can while it making it more attractive by focusing on special releases (like the Zelda-themed variant) and enticing software.

we have a thread about it here. The new apu's from amd pull a lot less wattage than the series s and outside of bandwidth they are pretty close in hardware specs now. Likely another generation of apu and they will pull ahead in all but bandwidth.

15.5 million games were sold across Europe last month, according to the latest GSD data.
Five million games were sold via physical retail, with the remaining 10.5 million via digital download stores.
Diablo 4 was comfortably the best-selling game of the month and it's the second fastest-selling game of the year behind Hogwarts Legacy. Zelda is the third fastest-selling game, but that game is missing its digital download data (Nintendo doesn't share this information), so it's possible Diablo 4 is really No.3 in terms of the list of fastest selling games of the year.
Over 66% of Diablo 4 sales were on PC, with over 21% on PS5 and just under 9% on Xbox Series S and X. The remaining 4% was on PS4.
In second place is Square Enix's Final Fantasy 16. The game's launch is 24% down compared with the last major Final Fantasy game: 2020's Final Fantasy 7: Remake. Final Fantasy 16 is a slightly different take on the series, and the 2020 game was released near the start of the COVID-19 lockdowns (and when the console install base was higher), which may explain the drop.
The next biggest new release is F1 23 from EA. It's a disappointing launch for the official racing game, with sales down almost 47% compared with what F1 22 managed over the same period.

Just under 65% of F1 23's sales were on PS5, with just over 22.5% on Xbox Series S and X and 12.5% on PS5. PC accounted for just 0.3% of sales.
The next notable new game in the June charts is Street Fighter 6 at No.9. Over 51% of sales for Capcom's fighting game was on PS5, with 28% on PC, 12% on Xbox Series S and X and almost 9% on PS4.
In terms of purely physical retail sales, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom just about held Diablo 4 off from the No.1 position.
Over in hardware, just 500,700 games consoles were sold across tracked European markets last month, which is up 33% over last June.
This is due to a spike in sales of PlayStation 5 (up 116%), while Switch sales are down slightly (-2.3%) and Xbox Series S and X sales are basically flat (sales down 0.8%).
PS5 reclaims its spot as Europe's No.1 console, having had to settle for second place last month due to the success of Nintendo Switch and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Over in accessories, Sony's DualSense controller is No.1, with sales up 6.6% over last year. Then it's the Xbox Wireless controller, which saw a huge jump in sales thanks to the launch of a special edition Starfield version.

The Legend of Zelda continues to be a money printing IP. TOTK in only it's launch month has already catapulted to #2 for the year ... and it's only on one platform, and it doesn't include digital sales. So, it's possible that with digital sales, it might challenge Hogwarts for top spot of 2023 in just its launch month.
Maybe not. Digital being more pronounced on consoles and PCs, I think Nitendo has a stronger showing for all physical sales where owners are more inclined to buy physical, particularly for big sellers. Sales might be skewed something like 2:3 physical:digital sales for Zelda on NSW, versus maybe 1:2 or 1:3 for Hogwarts on others.

Xbox situation in Japan is pretty dismal, but I suppose my comment could generally apply for the last 20 years. LOL

I'm pretty sure MS has essentially given up on Japan other than putting in a good effort to get Japanese dev support.

I do wonder if a brilliantly executed Series M could make a difference though... Launch in Japan with both Ori games bundled maybe.

That's nuts. Switch is how old?

I guess there is a big price difference so there's a much bigger market, as well as more games which are more appealing to the Japanese market.

But maybe people are even more into handhelds than before, as they've been conditioned to have smart phones at hand all the time in the past decade to decade and a half.

Do Japanese kids, like even 8 year olds, get smart phones?

I know the steam deck is pretty popular in japan. I also have some friends over there that have had me get them game pass and series s consoles. I think if Ms can shrink a series s even more then it could make more headway in japan. My friends wanted the S since its tiny and has game pass which they also use on their phones and other devices.

A series M would likely do very well in japan but who knows. I believe Ms just needs to invest in small japanese studios to pump out content for that market with some cross over appeal
