Xbox 360 HD-DVD Interview

Fact is that in the end, whatever quality the HDDVD player really is compared to standalone players, HDDVD playback looks SO much better than DVD - especially when you watch DVDs on most LCD HDTVs - that it will be hard to find unhappy people, except the geeks who will always compare the X360 player to the real standalone ones.

That's valid for the Bluray player on PS3. In the end, Bluray movies will look so much better than DVDs that it will hardly matter if the PS3 one is of "lower quality" than a standalone one, which it most probably will.

Who gains in the end? Us, the consumers, who get cheap HDDVD and/or Bluray players without having to sell a kidney and make room in the livingroom for one of those bulky standalone players!

Im really concern with how the PQ is with the processing going on these machines and how it compares to the qaulity of the stand alone...obviously, the HD-DVD would be better than DVD but how well ?

Well, definitely gain...but is it that we're getting some peice of crap player or something that is nice...

And if that happens. HD-DVD will definitely blowup. $200 for an HD movie player, remote and King Kong is a steal.

They better do it quick...because it seems that more and more it's more of a reactionary move then delivering the commitement.

Do you honestly believe the 360 HD-DVD addon will sell 10s of millions of units(which is what the quote is saying).

I seriously doubt that. They must be planning some kind of bundle or having it internal at some point.

Not anytime soon, but by 2009 it's possible. He didn't say WHEN there would be millions or TENS of millions did he? You also bring up the possibility of a bundle or having the drive integrated. Neither of those two options forces HDMI. Like I said, his quote (and your ideas) have NOTHING to do with getting an HDMI port.

Hey guys, I heard that Bill Gates bought a TV with HDMI, I guess that means that the xbox360 is getting it soon too! People need to calm down when they see HDMI and xbox360 mentioned in the same paragraph.

I wouldn't be too shocked if there was 3rd part software available to let the HD DVD player play on the PC, rather quickly......

I don't understand why this isn't supported out of the box. MS rambles a lot about PC<=>360 synergy, this one sounds like a no brainer, expands the market, and lessons risk by expsosing the device to the mammoth PC market. Win-Win (unless MS/Toshiba are losing money per unit).

Confused...

(unless MS/Toshiba are losing money per unit).
That seem probable to me. All the other HD drives cost a lot, and we know the diodes are hard to come by, which means expensive. I think the HDDVD drive is there to promote XB360 adoption. If it becomes a PC accessory, it'll mean people buying it (at loss to MS/Toshiba?) for MCE PCs and no growth of XB360 space. These drives will likely be quite rare too to begin with, so spreading them over XB360 users and the far larger PC market would leave the XB360's missing out.

Then there's the IHVs that MS don't won't to pee off. If they start releasing hardware to tie in with their software, some companies will be most miffed.

You computer is FAR less likely to be hooked up to your media center than your 360 would be, though. If people don't have a 360 or want a SECOND one to give their PC the ability to play it... it's simply more sales. So unless they're subsidizing the drive, it simply means more profits, more platform exposure, and more "people seeing a ubiquitous 360-shaped device everywhere." Why worry about diluting the "uniqueness" for the 360 if everyone starts "seeing a 360" all over the place? Hehe.

Now that I can see as a better reason. ;) Though frankly I think it's because their hardware partners in the PC space don't want to see the competition until THEY have a chance to really grow the exposure on internal devices. That's part of what drives a lot of consumer interest into their "bigger and badder" models.

Pretty shocking. Especially when you compare it to the high profile games it's competing with.

That seriously cannot be correct?

If they go by units, I find it hard to believe a $199 item is beating say, $39 DS games.

Or it could be a bunch of people buying for ebay, I got one pre-ordered for that purpose.

I can see it being incredibly in demand as well. "A couple hundred thousand" There will be a minimum 4.5 million Xbox360's just in America by Jan 1, do you think more than 200,000 will want that? Especially considering how rabid Xbox360 owners are about buying accessories, and how they seem to be the technology hardcore....the kind who bought a HDTV for the 360 in droves for example.

I'm starting to think the install base for this add on might be much better than I previously anticipated, could really give HD-DVD a legitimate boost as a format.

Toshiba's player is down to $338 from reputable merchants at pricegrabber.

That tells me HDDVD costs aren't that high. The 360 add on is supposedly cheaper because it uses the 360 for processing.

I guess what I'm saying is $99 add on seems likely to me within a year.

wow that interview made me sick. Everything he said can be contradicted. and 10 year old codecs?? maybe on the blu rays b4 but new blu rays use the same as HD-DVD here is a simple article that shows that interview was complete bull.

Complete bull? So far it looks like that 10 year old codec is being used, and that might even be the case for the PS3 pack-in. The general tone of the interview was (of course) PR though, I'll give you that.

OT: will there be some sort of indication on the package for consumers to find out about the (compression) format of the movie?

He toed the old 360-won't-have-hdmi line. He cited cost as the deciding factor when they were developing the hardware. He said that the HDCP and the ICT flag will never be a issue becasue the install base of the 360 HD-DVD drive will be so large (he said millions, mabye tens of millions) that any studio that decided to implement ICT would be roasted alive in the press. They wouldn't say how many HD-DVD drives would be available at launch (Nov 17, i think), but later on during different questions/conversations they said there would be "a couple hundred thousand", and "several hundred thousand" for the holidays.

I doubt that and even if they were it would only be in the specialist press. Time-Warner is the strongest supporter of these flags and when times up I think they will do it. They have franchises available that people will buy no questions asked: Matrix, Lord of The Rings & Potter. Most people will not know which studio made which movie, general consumers are ignorant of these facts. I think Warner is going to use the flags at the first opportunity after the moratorium is over.

LOTR is from New Line not Warner...no ?
