Sony Playstation Meeting September 7 2016 [PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, Rumors, Speculations, and News]

So now everyone will pretend that 4K BR is important, cause the last time they watched a BR movie on their console was 2 years ago?

I think not so much important as surprising. PS1 popularized CD-ROM as a storage medium on consoles. PS2 and PS3 pushed new optical formats and video playback. People rightly expected that Sony would continue that tradition regardless of how important it may or may not be.

The max power spec is based on the power supply, which was initially 250W for the PS4 at launch.

I speculated that the Neo SOC should have been able to get into the same range as Orbis, which 50W even with extra margin seems too big to consider approximate.
There are some additional consumers in the console that might need to be accounted for.
yeah, at 14nm people can expect a much more efficient use of energy while increasing specs, so I guess Mr. Fox might be about right. They just added another story to the PS4.

It's odd, like the size and weight is 50% more but the power nearly double (slim)!?

Not everything is equal in terms of the SOC and ports. The increase relative to the max power given for the original PS4 is 24%, where it is unclear what the contributors are.

Yeah, they missed out 'half the power, half the HDD space and countless less exclusives for just $100 less!'
More like 1/3 of the power. Isn't the XB1S 1.4TFlops?

Anyway, the only disappointing bit of news that came out of this is the lack of 4K BR support on either machine, and even that is a feature that only a small fraction of people will actually use. People are just bitter that Sony didn't boost the specs to compete with Scorpio.
At least one longtime Playstation supporter was not happy with the PS meeting...was pretty shocked at the harshness of this tweet on my timeline coming from him (reality pales on Neogaf)

Ouch. Is the conference being received that poorly in general? I haven't read that much Neogaf.
Don't know nor do I care who this guy is, but as I said above, he's just salty Sony didn't boost the specs. Let's see how much Scorpio will cost.

This won't make Sony lose market share. $399 for a pretty significant boost in specs is a good value. My guess is the price will drop when Scorpio releases, which I'm guessing will be at least 449, if not 499.

For the time being, the slim at 299 and Pro model at 399 will give Sony a nice 1-2 punch until Scorpio releases, where they can price their consoles (or at least the Pro model) a little more aggressively to compete. It's not all about power as you seem to think, Rangers. :)

I am scratching my head as to why Sony didn't include 4K BR support though. But again, it's something that a small fraction of people will actually use.

So, an observation about how Pro and 4K has mildly gimp'd your future PS4 abilities. Another 512 MBs is being made available for Pro, presumably is to accommodate larger render targets. This must be recovered from the OS reservation as the machine has no extra physical RAM. That OS reclamation should be possible for PS4. However, if devs had it for PS4, they could use it for assets that then wouldn't fit Pro at 4K. Therefore, in other to keep the Pro having a soft RAM advantage necessary for higher resolution rendering, RAM is being deliberately withheld from games in PS4.

Part of that 'OS reservation' on your PS4 is 'rendering space for 4K games on a different model console you don't have'.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will have 3 graphical settings on PS4 Pro :

- 4K mode, the big resolution and developers made the optimal choices
- 1080p high framerate, the game locked at 60 FPS
- 1080p bells and whistles, 30 FPS locked with every processing technique pushed to the max

Major Nelson had a tweet just now touting the 2TB One S as "shipping now". That one costs literally the same as the PS4 Pro for vastly less powerful hardware. It's kinda embarrassing Microsoft thinks they've had some kind of PR win today.

Personally, I think it's strange Sony left out 4K Bluray support, but they were probably just listening to all the games journalists on Twitter who before today always said that was a dumb feature since streaming is the future and no one wants to buy disks. Funny how many of those same people are now scandalized by its exclusion from the PS4 pro.

If we're referencing the same interview (no time stamp yet as the livestream is still ongoing) for the high frame rate mode he specifically mentioned unlocked framerate "to go north of 45." I didn't hear him say 60 or locked 60.

Depending how they managed the I/O buffers in BSD, they might have changed the 256MB from the south bridge to a 1GB and moved I/O buffering from main ram to that chip. That could free up 512MB in hardware without performance hit.

I will be getting it tomorrow at work from my MS fanboi friend...it's funny how they can twist things lol

Did they add the PS VR mini box to the Pro? That way you don't have all those extra cables? If they did maybe that's why they have the added power use?

EDIT: added "the"

Could of sworn that 512MB was being freed up on PS4 as well...

Yup game design will be limited by the PS4 as it has the weakest CPU of the current gen consoles between MS and Sony.

THough in seems to be CPU limited situation like in Corsa Assetto the PS4 pulls over. I suspect that the PS4 is at no disadvantage here if not a a slightly better footing thanks to a thinner lighter software layer.

Well UHD players are around 299 so you just get an Xbox One S if you want the player easy peasy. :) PS4Pro at the same price as the original PS4 seems like a pretty decent play and if you got UHD included for an extra 75 or 100 dollars would that make it a better deal for the vast majority of consumers ??
