Sony Playstation Meeting September 7 2016 [PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, Rumors, Speculations, and News]

Except I'm certain it's not 4K. Pixel Counter 2.0!! You are summoned!

No more. Look again.

On first look It looks native with artifacts on both axis. Which might be that new reconstruction technique (checkerboard rendering) they talked about. We'll see. It's definitely not the usual blurry upscaling. We can see 'native' edges.

I want to know how much better Horizon (and other games) would be on Pro while still using my 1080p TV. And if that would warrant upgrading. I need to know this now, thanks!

Do you want to know that in quantifiable numbers or in how large of an e-penis you could have for having something more powerful than your neighbor? :p

Regards,
SB

I wouldn't be shocked if Sony bumped this to $549 in new year.
Like when they moved it up to $450 CAD? From $399? Man, I do regret cancelling my PS4 pre-order then. It was seriously the only time you would gain value On an item like this.

I'm conflicted...
didn't think much of the show at all.
but the pro is exactly as expected apart from lacking uhd br, very decent price. Really dislike the look of it, but that's not a big deal to me.

slim, as expected including cost.
but the hdr on it and og ps4 was a shock.
but is that just for gaming? As you wouldn't need the higher copy protection level.

show made me feel meh about pro, but i blindly put that down to show and not the machine and it's capabilities.

More like 1/3 of the power. Isn't the XB1S 1.4TFlops?

Anyway, the only disappointing bit of news that came out of this is the lack of 4K BR support on either machine, and even that is a feature that only a small fraction of people will actually use. People are just bitter that Sony didn't boost the specs to compete with Scorpio.

Don't know nor do I care who this guy is, but as I said above, he's just salty Sony didn't boost the specs. Let's see how much Scorpio will cost.

This won't make Sony lose market share. $399 for a pretty significant boost in specs is a good value. My guess is the price will drop when Scorpio releases, which I'm guessing will be at least 449, if not 499.

For the time being, the slim at 299 and Pro model at 399 will give Sony a nice 1-2 punch until Scorpio releases, where they can price their consoles (or at least the Pro model) a little more aggressively to compete. It's not all about power as you seem to think, Rangers. :)

I am scratching my head as to why Sony didn't include 4K BR support though. But again, it's something that a small fraction of people will actually use.

MS fans should be pleased, the new PS4 pro doesn't have an upgraded drive, never mind cough cough that all we heard prior to this reveal and Scorpio at E3 was how MS could/should release an XB1 w/o an optical drive... Honestly I don't care about optical drives anymore, 10 years ago it was important today I buy all my movies from Amazon and can stream them on my phone, pc, tablet, tv - the convenience and lack of clutter due to format far outweighs anything else.

It's a trick, it's a ploy to get all the MS fanboys to praise bluray disc, and say that physical media is a must have. :p

It sure helps get sales to target only gamers, they had a horrible attach rate at the PS3 launch because many bought one (with sony losing money) because it was the best BR player at a very low price.

Wasn't the ps3 held back a bit from introduction so they could get those blu ray diodes ?? Sony could be just clearing the Ghosts of the PS3 by doing the opposite of everything from the last generation ;-)

It largely noise IMO, again all we ever heard prior to Scorpio around here was MS should lose the disk drive and cut the cost, now optical drives are an important piece of hardware... Too many people need to know who the story is about before they can say if something is good or bad . Personally I think Sony got the price right but I'd need to see how quiet and how well PS4 Pro improves PSVR before I could say if I would invest in the hardware. To say it another way PS4 pro solves a problem I don't currently have... I don't have a 4K TV so all other things being equal I have no need for the device. I think most of us knew this before the official reveal, if you don't have a 4K TV the value proposition here is hard to quantify.

Thing is pretty big but the images today have it next to the slim. Wonder how much big it looks relative to the OG PS4 that we were so used to looking at only up to a few weeks ago.

To make matters slightly more confusing, even if you did have a 4K TV, according to the recent statements some developers may choose to lock resolution at 1080p and upgrade visuals. So you're still upscaling 1080p. Not knowing which titles will get a resolution boost or a graphics boost is also quite jarring when it comes to planning.

I am really, really surprised and disappointed at the slim price difference between PS4 slim 500GB and PS4 Pro at 1TB. As an armchair expert, I think it's a mistake. 299€ is really too expensive for what the slim offers and 399€ is kind of too cheap for a Premium Playstation machine. I don't see the point of having those 2 machines at their respective specs / price.

People would have easily paid 449€ for a slightly overclocked, UHD equipped machine (they have a (not that) cheap Slim console for those not having 2 jobs so they were covered there). Clearly Sony have being traumatized by selling > 400€ machines to customers so they are probably making irrational decisions based on that past trauma (who can blame them?) and are not really interested into preventing people buying powerful and expensive PCs while leaving the console market.

And not even one freesync mention. For real gamers freesync is 10 times better than HDR. They don't even have one TV using freesync through HDMI. Do they even have one TV using adaptive framerates? I think they clearly missed an incredible opportunity. Freesync on Greatness awaits machine instead of 4K movies on Xbox could have being a great marketing coup IMO. And basically free.

Meh

It's not noise...

It's a puzzling business move when Sony is a major content provider and stands to make more money from reselling it's own content on yet another new medium (4K UHD BluRay).

That is what is most odd. How much more $ added to the BOM are we talking here? Phil S. indicated that it was a minor additional expense to add it to the Xbox One S once they had already added what was necessary to enable 4K streaming. Maybe the question was, "Give maximum boost to PSVR (by being able to sell PS4 Pro as cheap as possible) or give boost to UHD Blu-ray?" and PSVR won.

PSVR on PS4 Pro: ELI5?

Tommy McClain

The $100 price difference between PS4 and PS4Pro is even less significant if you package it with the PSVR and the latter should be able to deliver a much higher fidelity experience. As I described it in my "which console are you going to buy" thread - PS4Pro & PSVR is compelling VR at < $1,000 (actually less than $800) all in.

@mpg1 post reminds me of the Xbox One S.... Now that both new models are priced, who is going to buy a PS4 slim for 100 less dollars when you have a machine more than twice as powerful at the same time?

Also, regarding your post.... They went all out showing Bravia HDR 4k TVs, and 4k TV content plus HDR, yet the console can't play 4k UHD....and given the circumstances that's a bit ridiculous.
