No European PS3 launch until March

 2060.

So. In a matter of less than a month we have gone from 2 million at launch down to 500k. If this trend continues I wouldn't be surprised to see the US/Japan lanuch pushed back as well.

Now all microsoft needs to do for europe is a 360 + PES6 bundle this christmas.
Somewhere in redmond, j allard is dancing.

So Gears of War for the US, Halo 3 for EU/Australiasia. That'd be a tough nut to crack.

[edit]

Can someone explain this:

the PAL market is the most complicated region in which to launch the system, and is therefore the most pragmatic choice to bear the brunt of a shortage of components

why?

Holy crap. They're cutting this close. The 100k in JPN is essentially a paper launch.

I think some of you guys need to calm down, why do you really need a PS3 at launch? So you can play Resistance?

As annoying as it might be for some to hear it over and over again - PS3 really isn't just a games machine. And some of us intend uses for it beyond playing Resistance & Motorstorm at launch, and it's hard to replicate that with any other machine. But thanks for the sales pitch.

I'm starting to think Kenny here wants to wait until the PS3 can be manufactured cheaply enough so he doesn't make a big loss on the hardware... By 2007 i just cannot believe he will sell PS3 at a very big loss per unit if at all, considering the price.

Maybe it's just me... But it's like... The price for us is the same, and will be the same at least for a year or so, but the price of manufacturing for him goes down every day...

Clever man

As a consumer I ain't pissed about this because I was going to, and will still get my PS3 in the end of 2007 when MGS4 gets released.

But as a fan(boy) of Playstation, I'm a BIT worried here about the outcome here. Sony is really making it easy for Wii and Xbox360 and if they can somehow still get on top here it would be a miracle. Sony is seriously shooting them in the leg with this. They better get those PS3 consoles to the market, god damn it. One of theyr biggest markets and they chose to be out from there for the biggest sale season, god knows what they were thinking.

So i think in their eyes PS3 might just sell 50M in its lifetime, which is not good compared to PS1 and PS2, but that will mean that there will be 50M Bluray players on the market, and that is Good (TM) for them.

But 50M is a drop in the movie-player bucket. 140M DVD players were sold last year alone.

PS3 is going to have to succeed on its merits as a game machine.

Cheers

Personally, I think that was also the reason for the uber-late launch of the PSP in Europe.

Definitely. And us Europeans/Brits are generally much easier to convince than, say, the Japanese, who will buy the PS3 if it was covered in shit.

Here things are VERY different, we get tired and change "sides" without even thinking about it.

PES, FIFA, GTA on 360 before PS3 is out will be a hell of a lot for MS. Here in Europe, people WILL buy the console which lets you play these games, whatever it is, especially if they don't expect the next playstation for months and knowing it will cost a lot more too.

Sony are taking a huge risk. Even a useless paper launch with a few tens of thousands units released in Europe would divert the attention from MS to Sony even though people wouldn't be able to get their hands on one for a while. Delaying is just the wrong tactic in my very very humble opinion, but then again i don't work for Sony's marketing (i wish!) and they have shown they know their stuff, so you never know... So far, Sony has been playing the part of the idiot and they keep doing it, with no sign of actually making us happy, which is what people need. People need to see that Sony has no problem with their new super-high-tech machine or morale will decrease and they'll soon choose the Xbox or especially the Wii which is very cheap and is hardly a huge decision to take - people will buy one "on instinct" cause it's cheap and "looks fun".

Sony has been disappointing their fans for quite some time now and it's not good.

I'm definitely not saying they're doomed cause they're not, but they need to start getting their act together or they'll lose their grip on the market. They just don't seem to care...

I was only talking about the HD-movie market. Of course DVD players sell a lot more, but i think Sony is firstly and foremostly worried about pushing HDDVD out of business, then they can start worring about how to out-sell DVD in the long run, which won't happen for a looooooooooooong time.

Any hope we'd get a PS3 manuufactured with cooler running chips? What is Cell going to be for US and JP launch, 90 nm or is it already going to be 65 nm?

I don't think GTA4 will be released before spring 2007, I think it's scheduled for late 2007 (to coincide with PS3 EU launch :D )
Don't forget PES and FIFA will still be availabe for PS2 and PSP, and with the xbox360 version of PES reprted to be more just a highres version of the PS2 game with worse online functions, I don't think people in EU will rush out to buy an xbox360 just for those multiplatform football games. These are games that rely on the playability and multiplayer fun, not that much in graphics (well, FIFA updates maybe rely more as they're basically graphical updates anyway ;) )

Plus, don't forget who gets the lion's share of the BlueRay license fee per player. That shouldn't be overlooked...

You know, you might be onto something here.

Now this is the point at which Microsoft ought to ninja-announce an XBox360 which incorporates a HD-DVD player in the basic package, not just the add-on for the current machine.

Not that they will, but it would certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons if they did! ;)
