No European PS3 launch until March

that would be miserable. what if hddvd flops insanely ?

Ms would have a xbox360 with a hddvd drive but no games taking advantage of it , no movies are out for it (or not so much as blueray)

its just my 2 cents..

Once again, Sony proves they don't know how to exploit customers for maximum profit properly.
A $999 "Premium Version" launch would have had insane margins and have sold like hot cakes if the supply was extremely limited. It'd have nullified the EBay bullshit too, and would have made those few customers happy if it had features that wouldn't be relaunched until H2 2007. Heck, I'd even have bought one! (if I discovered a diamond mine between now and November 2006, that is)

P.S.: The PR talks of Sony's "computer entertainement system". But the Playstation isn't recognized as computer brand in the EU, so the delay si clearly a fake. No, really! Errr... okay, not really. damn.

Now this is the point at which Microsoft ought to ninja-announce an XBox360 which incorporates a HD-DVD player in the basic package, not just the add-on for the current machine.

Not that they will, but it would certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons if they did! ;)
This seems like a bad idea, given blue laser diodes being the likely culprit for the delay and small production numbers.

That's too bad for the EU that they are behind schedule:cry:

Not to kick dirt in anyone's face, but I'm still getting mine at launch.

All I can say is that I've held the PS3 and it's one smooth MoFo, on top of that, it's quiet as a mouse.

Guys, we don't expect you other worlders to give up your preorders just out of solidarity. But it would make a nice gesture, though

Well, it was just a tongue-in-cheek suggestion which imagined they didn't have any shortages of such diodes. A big part of Sony's strategy with Blu-ray is relying on PS3 to get a relatively cheap BR player out there in large quantities. If MS could have announced and released a HD-DVD capable XB360 around now it would have shafted Sony in Europe. They aren't going to though so who cares?

In response to hey69, I've got no great knowledge on the availability of HD-DVD vs Blu-ray but a quick search on Amazon seem to show almost twice as many HD-DVDs as BR discs available which would indicate a wider range to me!

March next yr is a joke..

I was actually suprised by this announcement and extremely dissappointed..

I really didn't believe that Sony could actually loose a significant amount of market share in the long run from the crap we kept hearing before but now..

I'm really starting to believe Sony are steadily moving towards f*cking themselves over with all these lies.. If they would have at least announced this from the beginning then i'm sure some of us UK residents wouldn't care too much..

I *really* hope a considerable number of Sony executives lose there jobs because of this..

They couldn't announce it from the beginning if they didn't know they were going to have production difficulties. Before you go ranting about how rotten Sony are, try developing and launching your own cutting-edge tech CE product and then come back when you've encountered no problems whatsoever, proving that Sony are just messing us about.

the first 30 titles (i just trow a number there) doesnt mean anything in the world of future titles (1000's movies in HD format)

Talk about over-reacting... Why would you hope that someone loses their job? That's not very nice.
Newsflash! Shit happens!

The shortage in blue diodes was only announced a few days ago and Sony have reacted accordingly.

No reason to hope that lots of people lose their jobs... Jesus some people take bloody videogames way too seriously...

Sony are walking on a very very fine thread.

I think their mentality is now that they don't really care how many PS3s (as consoles) they sell compared to the 360. I think their main priority is now how many PS3s (as Bluray players and media hubs) they will sell compared to HDDVD and Windows Media Hubs.

Remember that Sony will make a whole lot more money from Bluray movie sales than anything else, if the format does kick off. It's practically just the cost of the discs and packaging and nothing else since the content is already all done, ready to be re-re-resold for the Nth time on a different format at a higher price than DVDs.

So i think in their eyes PS3 might just sell 50M in its lifetime, which is not good compared to PS1 and PS2, but that will mean that there will be 50M Bluray players on the market, and that is Good (TM) for them.

Sony might get 30% market share (and MS Nintendo get another 30% each), but in their eyes, that might be around 90% of the HD-movie market, which would be GREAT business for them.

(All the numbers are obviously assumptions of what Sony might expect and why they're doing what they're doing now considering those expectations)

london-boy I think you are dead on here. It is not about the PS3 at all, that's just an added bonus for/of BDA. There are supposed to be 3 other players, Sony, Pioneer, & Panasonic coming out by the time the PS3 hits the US. They all need the same diodes. IMHO that is real reason for the big reduction in PS3's.

BDA takes priority over the PS3, thus the BDA players are getting first dibs at the diodes.

Quite the opposite, by all reports. Supply is simply universally constrained, so even though PS3 is getting the bulk of the blue laser diodes that are available, it's still not the numbers you'd like.

You know, you might be onto something here.

Heh, they don't call me "sexy with brains" for nothing!

Seriously, Sony and a lot of the big players in here can be very transparent and easy to understand on a corporate level. And i haven't even started my Marketing studies yet, i start next week! :D

Now that you mention marketing: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=19508

According to a report on MediaGuardian, the advertising and marketing campaign for Sony’s next-gen console had GBP 10 million put aside for the UK market alone, with a further GBP 30 million earmarked for Europe and Australia.

Only a day after Sony revealed the official website for the new console, marketing campaigns across the region has been shelved with Alan Duncan, marketing director for SCEE commenting that all plans are, “under reviewâ€￾.

Serious numbers.
