No European PS3 launch until March

Then people will start importing like hell, the same way PSP was imported when Sony decided to make Europeans wait a whole year. Unless there are no PS3s around obviously, but if they have 6M units around before March (YEAH RIGHT.. but anyway) then there will be thousands flying over here.

And they won't like it cause they'll lose on exchange rate.

Yep, that's one of the options I am considering right now, as the exchange rates are pretty fancy for us Europeans at the moment.

A bit off topic, but what was the true reason of the year long PSP delay in EU?
It's hard to believe it was manufacturing problems as there wasn't any such new tech as the blue laser diode of the PS3, was it purely a strategic decision?
A year of delay because of maufacturing doens't sound too believable for something like PSP.

They started manufacturing the PSP in the (expensive but hi-tech) Japanese plant only at first, and then later on bring in a Chinese plant. I think there were some delays with getting the Chinese plant up and running.

Also, believe it or not, I think they somewhat underestimated the demand for the PSP. It's a big risk, a new handheld in a market dominated so long by Sony.

For the PS3 they have been working to get Chinese plants up and running from day one.

Initially it was due to manufacturing, but a whole year...??

Dunno, i keep thinking that it's just them totally disregarding the European market as usual. They're not the only ones, mind you, but still, doesn't make things much better...

Oh well, i'm off to the Bahamas early next year!! In your face, Sony!

Commercial production will start late Sept.

Holy crap. They're cutting this close. The 100k in JPN is essentially a paper launch.

I think some of you guys need to calm down, why do you really need a PS3 at launch? So you can play Resistance? Better to just go for a 360 and enjoy the nice selection of games it has, and pick up the PS3 when it becomes available in the spring/summer, if you have the money of course.

IMO, anyone looking for the best games this holiday should be looking at 360 anyways, PS3 would be nice because it's shiny and new, but really, look at what you're missing out on, not a whole lot.

Kutaragi dropped the news in a conference. Would it surprise anyone if that was the first SCEE heard of it?

Also, more details, some quite crazy ones:

"We decided to focus on the Japanese and U.S. markets," he said at the gaming unit's Tokyo headquarters. "I am so sorry not to be able to answer to all the expectations."

The company is still sticking to its initial global target of shipping 6 million PlayStation 3 machines by March 2007

They expect just over 2m shipped by the end of the year between the US and Japan. However..

They expect only 100k in Japan on Nov 11 and 400k in the US on Nov 17.

Commercial production will start late Sept.

my friend you are wrong. you are forgeting about santa clauss!

last I heard, he had already a gigantic PS3 plant build up the north pole, where he plans to build around hmmm... 6mil - 400k - 100k = 5.5 mil ps3's to help sony reach their target for hollydays.
he will personally distribute the machines @ christmass through chimneys. so better get your pen and paper and start writing.

now that's living!

:devilish:

imported and sold more then 60 psp's .. damn i made a litle fortune there

well if santa can fit in a chimney, I though a ps3 could also do that.
but its just theory. maybe it will fit only through industrial sized chimneys.

That's the second option I am considering. Maybe if MS drops the price at little bit, I am in.

I'm pretty pissed. Yesterday they've started their euro promotion and today the delay ... c*ck teasing deluxe. I've just placed an pre-order for an import PS3. BR RC1 is anyway more to my liking.

I wouldn't be worried about fitting into the chimney as much as the "dropping" part of the deal.

Would you quit that unrealistic fantasy crap? Your post count is already high enough. Everybody knows Santa's an Xbot, at least the European one.

Yea, thanks for the nice xbox marketing speak scooby

All in all not looking good for Sony. I expect MS to have some big advantage from this.

Well, take the numbers of X360 sold per month in Europe *1.4 (to account for Christmas season) * 5 month and voilà you'll know how big the advantage is.

WHAT THE HECK ?!?!??!

Sony just made all people who pre-ordered through shops sign a BRAND NEW, EFFECTIVE September 01, 2006 pre-order sheet that SAID November 17, 2006.

Not to mention Sony's partners, like MediaMarkt - they still have the preorder stuff on their home page (599 Euros for the premium system). I think they'll be a bit angry.

Sony are walking on a very very fine thread.

I think their mentality is now that they don't really care how many PS3s (as consoles) they sell compared to the 360. I think their main priority is now how many PS3s (as Bluray players and media hubs) they will sell compared to HDDVD and Windows Media Hubs.

Remember that Sony will make a whole lot more money from Bluray movie sales than anything else, if the format does kick off. It's practically just the cost of the discs and packaging and nothing else since the content is already all done, ready to be re-re-resold for the Nth time on a different format at a higher price than DVDs.

So i think in their eyes PS3 might just sell 50M in its lifetime, which is not good compared to PS1 and PS2, but that will mean that there will be 50M Bluray players on the market, and that is Good (TM) for them.

Sony might get 30% market share (and MS Nintendo get another 30% each), but in their eyes, that might be around 90% of the HD-movie market, which would be GREAT business for them.

(All the numbers are obviously assumptions of what Sony might expect and why they're doing what they're doing now considering those expectations)
