Middle Generation Console Upgrade Discussion [Scorpio, 4Pro]

This focus/discussion about the Scorpio price feels completely ridiculous to me as it implies an existing or to be purchased 4k TV, extra 4TB++ HD and Internet bandwidth to deal with 100GB++ content for the intended 4k target usage(so they say). If 100 or 200USD +- matters people shouldn't be able to afford the rest anyway.

You dont need 4TB HDD or any special internet...any more than you do with PS4 Pro. I am sure 1TB HDD will be fine and 500GB workable, as with current Xbox/PS4.

4k/HDR TV is more debatable, it isn't necessary, but nearly feels so.

Luckily for scorpio I think next BF is pretty much exactly when 4k/HDR TV's will be hitting that mainstream sweet spot of price and availability. Right now it feels just a bit too early and jumbled.

I have roughly 230GB left on my 2GB+0.5GB XB1. With 4K content you can expect games to be 100GB++ so obviously you need larger drives which are even more critical because downloading the content takes even longer.

I'm guessing you mean "2TB + 0.5TB XB1"...

Either way it all depends on how many games you play...I think 1TB will still be enough for some people on Scorpio.

Huh? I occasionally game at 4K on my PC and no game is all that close to 100 GB. The closest I have on my machine is a game which is roughly 50 GB. I know there are a few games that are just a little bit over 60 GB, however. And that's with higher PC texture quality.

Is that because these games are authored for a 1080p baseline though, and just rendered higher for 4K? When 4K is the norm, will we have 4x the texture requirements or will textures at current resolutions be adequate?

Doubtful, IMO. If you have 4x the texture requirements, you'll have a vastly increased load time for games and/or greatly increased requirements for streaming textures at that quality without texture pop-in. Even with an SSD that will be noticeable. Without an SSD (at best Project Scorpio might ship with a SS-HDD) that's not going to be practical, IMO.

Assets in games are not only constrained by memory and the rendering subsystem (GPU), but by the storage medium as well (both speed and size).

Hopefully the data subsystem is the focus of much improvement, the current install speed is too slow, of games grow or 4K texture packs add more time it could be really damaging to the experience.

Also a small ssd like cache for better game asset streaming would be welcome.

720p low bitrate game DVR is not good enough, I think it should be 1080 at least possible with a decent bitrate, I am happy for the requirement to be your own external media for optimum experience.

SSD pricing has dropped like a rock , it wouldn' be very experience to just replace the standard drive with an ssd vs a standard drive and ssd cache. It may even be cheaper.

Also with retail seemingly colpasing in the states this year in terms of video game releases it may be better to just remove the optical drive and go back to carts / dd or just dd

I expect a two tier storage system. A primary tier of fast flash storage, at least 128GB in size, and an optional second tier featuring internal mechanical HDDs or external USBc connected ones (of the user's own choosing).

This would enable fast load times of popular apps/games as well as a low cost SKU (like the 360 Arcade); 128GB Flash is just $35.

Cheers

Honestly with Scorpio I just hope they go the Playstation route and just give you easy access to replace the internal drive..

SSD's prices are dropping like a rock and I suspect next Black Friday you will be able to pick up a 1TB SSD for a pretty reasonable price...

I was thinking a similar thing in another thread I believe it was.
have an m.2 ssd built in.
trouble is it all adds up....
I'm not sure about a sku without a hdd though, unless mandatory to add one.
reason being in my version, the ssd would store recent apps, os and around 10 last played games, but just the memory context. So it could fast switch and load them, be right back to where you left it.

AMD will sneak-peek its high-end Zen CPU in December, starting a new CPU war:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3145...n-cpu-in-december-starting-a-new-cpu-war.html

“Watch New Horizon, hosted by Geoff Keighley, for an exclusive advance preview of our new 'Zen' CPU ahead of its 2017 Q1 launch,” the company said on the public invite. “See eSports & Evil Geniuses legend PPD put ‘Zen’ through its paces. There’ll be appearances from special guests and giveaways. This is the first time the public will be able to try it themselves and see its capabilities. If you’re serious about gaming, this is an event you do not want to miss.”

Geoff Keighly = host of gaming events
Xbox Scorpio = gaming console

Zen in Scorpio confirmed!

Heh, I'm still taking heavy sodium pills on the zen in scorpio thing, but it's fun to engage in reckless wanton speculation. This alo does seem to make it a shade more likely.

But then again, doubtful they'd announce this on Dec 13, so there's no connection really. Not like in 6 months they're gonna be getting any mileage out of the fact Keighley hosted something.
