Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Why is this strange? Scores are always relative to other games out at the time. The "bar" is always raised as new, excellent games come out. What was a 9.0/10 4 years ago is likely less so now, because we've seen better. Plus, MP1 and MP2 were, IMO, overrated...and in hindsight it's much easier to see such things. This may be the best Prime ever, but its score does not directly correspond MP1 or MP2. It corresponds to today's games.

Ok, there we disagree whole heartedly. I'll take MP over just about ANY other shooter out there, as for it redefining genre's...that's just hyperbole, but it still doesn't change the fact that this was one of, if not the ONLY, game to transition 2d - 3d flawlessly. Even the mighty Zelda in it's early 3d incarnations were not so successfull

So giving it a lower score doesnt make sense because its better than the old, but also better/on par with todays games.
Isn't the point that he disagrees? If he thought it was better/on par with today's best games, I'm sure he'd give it more than an 8.5.

It sounds like it'll still be a good game, but Gamespot's review for me is exactly what I was suspecting. I'm definitely going to give MP3 a shot, but as a rental. It's sounding like it's a good game, but it's likely not up there with Bioshock. I actually wonder how much Bioshock's release knocked down MP3's score in comparison.

As I said, Gamespot tends to be the more rational reviewer in general...

It's called sarcasm. But that said, it would've been interesting to see your stance had gamespot scored it 9 or higher. ;)

For some reason I have the sneaking suspicion that you were expecting the game to not live up to the "hype", and thus only agree with the reviews that knock down just a little bit more than others, and call them "rational". :p

Oh come on. Gamespot is essentially the world leader in games coverage, and most respected review site on the internet. (I'm not saying they didn't totally miss the mark here, but Asher's comment is certainly a widespread sentiment among many)

Not directed at anyone in particular but....this attacking someone because of their own preference is getting a little out of hand.

I know you guys love your Wii, and love your nintendo, but just because Asher feels dissapointed with the system, is no need to start flinging attacks and calling him a "fool", saying he's being dishonest etc etc

Man, some people just can't let others have their own opinion...

Gamespot also blames the game's controls for being too good. Who on earth complains about the controls being GOOD!? Or silly things like multiplayer?

Who the hell plays Metroid for multiplayer? People play Metroid for great level design, gameplay, and speed runs. Yeah, MP2 tried multiplayer, but that sucked. MP:H provided a good multiplayer experience, but had a weak single player mode. Metroid should ALWAYS be about single player, not multiplayer.

It's like complaining that Mario games no longer contain multiplayer elements because the first Mario Brothers game was a multiplayer game. I can understand if the series was always know for great multiplayer (like Bomberman for example), and that removing it would be a crime, but not when it was never the focus of the entire series.

In that case you better go out and get Resident Evil 4, after all it must be better then Bioshock since it got 9.1 from GameSpot and Bioshock only got 9.0 :)

I'm just poking fun at the man/woman, nothing malicious intended. :)

The "world leader?" I haven't seen them get many scoops ahead of IGN, and their site layout still feels pretty broken. Gaming quasi-blogs like gonintendo compile far more news and tidbits than them, and overall Jeux-france seems to be able to give you first looks at game media ahead of GS. When it comes to Sony and Nintendo, Famitsu is way ahead of GS, too. And "most respected" by whom? I found their last-gen reviews to be extremely biased toward anything with normal mapping to the point of overlooking critical flaws to deliver 10's in graphics, or giving extremely high gameplay scores to games with the same flaws for which they massively dock games from less revered companies and franchises (or that lack the same graphical pizazz). I've seen them criticize games because they didn't have certain effects that the hardware didn't support. For example, they gave Metroid Hunters an 8 for graphics apparently because the DS doesn't support bilinear filtering, FSAA, or resolutions higher than 256 x 192 (only significant complaint was that it was "grainy"). Right now, Gamespot is "most repsected" by Nintendo haters because they give lower scores to Nintendo games rated highly by other sites. But for every DS game they dock for not having an analog stick or bilinear filtering, and every Wii game they dock for the controls being too good, you can find plenty of overrated Xbox and PS2 games that they just followed the pack on and gave great scores to.

Sometimes they're really fair, like their Twilight Princess review. But you can find such fair moments at other gaming sites too, just usually on different games.

AFAIK IGN is not only a larger site (more views\hits\forum posts) they are also IMO better.

Uh, that just shows how many times the term gamespot shows up on Google. Not how many hits\views\forum posts the actual website gets in comparison to IGN. :)

Gamespot does generate more traffic than ign according to Alexa, but its not by much, overall gamespot ranks 135th, and ign is 163rd.

Resident Evil 4: Wii edition? I got it on launch day. It's okay, but not a 9.1.

Gamespot was definitely off on that one. ;)

Any link to back this up?

Quick google fight shows Gamespot has 3x as many hits

Actually, the history of IGN is interesting. It has more of a community than Gamespot, for certain. But it's also got a far higher percentage of Nintendo loyalists, since it was the de-facto N64 site back in the day. IGN was a merger of many sites, the largest of which was N64.com.

Nintendo was essentially IGN's flagship platform for years, in terms of proportion of hits. That's still there, because a lot of IGN's new management are ex-Nintendo editors, even. Their reviews are almost always rah-rah Nintendo, IMO.

To quote Asher:

Rah-Rah Metroid Prime 3. Nah-Nah. Gamespot vs. IGN. Otherwise Angry Mod Yah - Yah.

So get back on topic.

Its a good game, controls are great at times its a little sluggish for turning but aiming is superior and they take advantage of this for several places where you couldn't possibly hope to do it with dual analog. Though manipulating devices with the controller felt pointless and would have preferred just press A for all of them instead of pressing A pulling the controller away from screen twisting clockwise then pushing back in (I guess its supposed to immerse you but it just doesn't jive with me). Its cool that you can manipulate the devices in your ship but they should have restricted to your ship and ditched it elsewhere.

Opening sequence should have been left out of the game it doesn't compare to like the opening of say Bioshock or Half Life 1 and just plain doesn't fit in a Metroid game (on the other hand if you've never played Metroid it probably won't sit out as this is so wrong). I just didn't like the NPC models or voice overs and get annoyed having a voice tell my objectives (oh and its really annoying having to press the 1 button to proceed through the conversation).

The first planet environment is really nice with good art style and good metroidy feeling music. I will say the environment isn't quite as nice as Bioshock but the combat feels much better with actually good boss fights. In fact, I would say the boss fights are some of the best boss fights I've ever done. Puzzles aren't bad though they never really make me stop and think its almost always more trying to find what I'm supposed to do not figuring out how to to do it.

That seems like a good thing to me. Lord knows you probably wouldn't want the uber difficulty level thrown at you on the first planet. :)

Keep the impressions coming!

Pretty sure I'll pick this up tonight on my way out, and will most likely do some playing when I should be sleeping for work tomorrow. I'll post my impressions. Up front, I'll let everyone know that I never really got into Metroid Prime. I played it for an hour and never got back into. Didn't really give it a fair chance. Anyway, it won't just be some Metroid Prime fan pumping the game because the love Metroid. I've never actually played a Metroid game all the way through.

This is one convention from the 16-bit era that really needs to die. It's absolutely nonsensical when you have voice acting, but even when you have just text, come on, no one is going to take 2 hours to read 2 lines.
