First Killzone screenshot/details? So says USAToday..

convert RGB -> luminance
apply a threshold to cut all pixel that are not bright enough
downample
downsample again!
blur a bit
blur a bit more
apply some color transform that mixes color components in order to fake a chromatic abberation
composite with your image scaling back and mirroring
(do this multiple times at multiple scales if you want to simulate the presence of more tha one lens..)

That's a disappointing solution. I was hoping for raytracing within the virtual lens, 14 iterations (for 7 element lens), with mathematically accurate glass and coatings!

It's possible, I suppose. We've seen plenty of games use DOF and motion blur to help cover up jaggies. There's also the old "edge filter + selective blur", but IMO that gives poor results based on what I've seen in my own experiments and also in the GRAW2 demo for PC.

I think its probably more a result of the low-contrast colors used, which did wonders for Gears of War.

You're right ,and ambient occlusion helps a lot too, since objects are 'fading to black' where they are close each other.

*Chuckle* This lens flare effect doesn't seem to "do much" and is not in the trailer. I wonder what they are used for. Perhaps the player will be dealing with Helghan's flash light, strobes and some peculiar lightning effects ?

It's there..all the time..you just don't notice it :)
Pay attention at any bright explosion..if you have a bright and white thing on the upper right corner of the screen..than you get a soft bluish flare in the lower left corner..

 I will have to look harder then. The developers better do a bunch of before and after pictures because noobs like me may not be able to tell.

EDIT: I watched the trailer again and I think I can see the subtle effect now. They are indeed "everywhere" from the exit lights, head lights, explosions, ... but it still would be nice to have a "with vs without" picture/video though. Thanks guys.

There's a common view in the arts/media industries - if you do something well enough, people don't notice. Not consciously anyhow. When you can see the bloom, it's poorly done. When you don't notice the bloom, but the pictures look 'really good', it's because the bloom is applied convincingly and it adds to the realism. Chances are film grain and lens flares won't be noticed consciously but will add to a sense of realism and liking of the visuals. It'll be a je nais se quoi feature.

You can't tell, but your brain can..and that's why it looks so good to many ppl though they can't properly explain why

je ne sais quoi..

that's it. :)

the other way for the brain to react is: if it can't be properly explained then it's not there ,so it's a mater of being rationnal ,to discard it.That's why it's nothing special for others.

Can anyone explain to me these pics?

Yeah, I really noticed such effects when I was frame-stepping through the trailer on my PS3. Then they really stood out.

It's more" à je ne sais quoi", you wrote "I was born it what" ;)
And also Killzone 2 actually is more impressive due to the filmography touch than the tech part, and it's not a bad thing when the esthetic drive the technic.

I looked up the correct spelling. I think you're confusing the French with the Latin. I thought it was a French phrase, but 'The Internet' said it was Latin.

It's a French expression Shifty… I' m French, you don't suppose this thanks to my "Great" english?;)
And you known don't faith The Internet!;)
