First Killzone screenshot/details? So says USAToday..

Hmm...looks good. Need to see more.

30fps or 60fps?

720?

Looks to be a corridor shooter, not many open spaces, very cramped.

Poly count seems to be low....characters around 40K

Multiplayer?

Is this the Unreal 3 engine? Very much like Geow.

I would say resistance is still technically better. But..........

The lighting and shadows are excellent. The way shadows are created from muzzle flashes and other light sources are superb. The animation of the Helgast jumping over the railing with the shadow on the back wall are superb to imo easily up there with the best in animation terms.

Textures are not the best seen but if this is a "pre-pre-alpha" I assume that they may improve them later on.

The way the environment are being shot apart is also very well done and adds emersion.

One thing is that Triple H in the landing craft (the one with the long hair lol).

Poly count low? I disagree.
Multiplayer will be revealed later this year with info on an open beta they're going to have as well.
Unreal Engine? Have you even read the thread before posting? Nothing like GeOW IMO.
Resistance better technically? Yeah right.
I'm pretty sure it will have larger open spaces as well and not just be "corridor shooter".

Jesus Christ just seen the trailer.

I can not believe this is real time. I cant!!

This is what I was waiting for!!

This is the most impressive visual achievement I ve ever seen!!

EricVonZipper I dont know what you are talking about and I bet you havent even tried to see the trailer.

Dear Lord that video looked like CGI!

Achievement unlocked?

It's going to be scary what they will be able to do 5 years from now on the same hardware.

I'm all for the art direction here (and I love the weapon design, first person view), and the animations towards the end impressed me. I thought the facial detail was quite good at the beginning.

I like the character design and animation. 2 of them remind me of my friends/coworkers (The main character and the one with bandana). I can totally relate to them and the way they talk, except that the guys at work are pretty mellow. I don't know how they will react during wartimes :)

I am also keen to see more weather attacks. I hope we get to see wind, snow, fog, rain, lighting (day/night) and lightning put to offensive/defensive use in gameplay.

Finally, I am curious about any streaming technology they may introduce later to overcome the load time.

Still waiting for someone to show the playthrough (some day).

I'm just glad to see it's not gonna see release this side of new years..

Otherwise I'd have to break of half a grand and invest in a PS3 prematurely..

Again, MS will have a problem answering this game in 2008 IMO

I read this a lot and it sounds illogical. This is Killzone NOW, not in 2008. The game will also progress, improve until release. If there is a game in planning as impressive on consoles, we should look at it now. I don't know if that mad a sense (sorry, English 4th language)...

Killzone 2 Dev said at Neogaf:

Hey folks.
I'm a little busy at the moment, but I have to say something!

First of all. WHAT DID I SAY? Did I lied? Am I a jackass, because I could not say anything about KILLZONE "2"? I could not. It IS one of our most important games, in the history of SONY Computer Entertainment. And I hope you like it!

And I am not finished yet:

- Don't forget one thing: This game is PRE-pre-alpha! So, not PRE-Alpha, PRE-PRE! So, please don't start some "Hey, can you see that texture poppin' up! PLEASE, stop it, ok?
There will be much more details, effects and so on. Give us some time.

- Second: Half of the animations are still NOT in the game so, it will look MUCH MUCH better in the final game. Yes, we said it: The animations are matching the target render. Maybe it looks even better in the final game.

- third: Is there already a video out? I get no info here, because the conference is killing us (with joy). If so, enjoy it! If not, playstation storewill have it. You have to see it in HD to believe it.
And finally: mckmas8808, Bad_Boy, Busty, I said it, and we delivered!

So, wait for the conference for more info.
You saw NOTHING yet!

bye

(oh and, .... did I say "KILLZONEwillSHOCK")
Sorry, I could not resist

Erm can I say lmao???? half the animations it's already looking amoung the best animation I have seen in game.

He is also confurming that the textures, effects (expolsions) will be improved. Looks like they definatly are trying to get to that CG target render and in animation and possibly lighting and shadows beyond it!!!!

I wonder if he's giving away the title at the end there?

Killzsone: Shock

Seems to fit with the controlling of the weather element that's that bad guys are supposed to do?

I cannot believe there's something better coming from them though.... the mind boggles. Only a few hours to wait to find out though which is better than someone saying "be looking to the left at 6:31 pm on the 8th of December for a major announcement"

That dude doesn't work for Guerrilla. I'm not sure who he is, but he passes himself off as a Sony employee or insider, but not at Guerrilla. He's never verified who he is, so take with a grain of salt.

You might be right, however the Killzone Dev on Sony forums did state that the screen shot and build was from last saturday and was "pre-pre-alpha" stage, so it seems to be consistant (especally with the huge drubbing he was getting over the leaked screenshot).

Also some more tec info:

The evening ended with a few brief comments on the tech specs of the PS3 exclusive. The game will feature (warning: technical terms follow) deferred rendering with ambient occlusion and multiple shadow casting lights. The effects used include "depth based color grading, motion blur, and full screen anti aliasing" with "proprietary lighting techniques to create a vivid and living world."

Aurally, the game will offer 7.1 surround sound, audio occlusion with wave tracing. We're assuming the game is running in 1080p, as we sat in the first row of a massive screen ... and it still looked stunning. The developers noted that they were "grateful for Blu-ray" as a single level has already taken 2GB of space. "The PlayStation 3 allows us to do so much ... [it] would not be possible on any other platform."

(Not sure about the 1080p bit though!

I am watching the trailer again and again and again.....how can it be real?

How on earth did they achieve that freaking detail, such awesome animations, such physics, such weather effects in a matter of 2 YEARS!!

HOW!!!

Ninja Theory was working for working on Heavenly Sword since if I remember correctly 2003!
Epic has invested a lot and for years on Unreal Engine 3.0 and worked for probably 3 years on Gears of War!
Halo3 was probably in development for around as much as Killzone 2!
Crisis relies on high end computers and on a very advanced engine!

And Guerilla a not so famous dev house, which hasnt previously developed a game of an AAA title comes with just 2 YEARS of work with a game that looks above anything I ve ever seen and offered from any other developer!

In just 2 years they had to develop a new engine, learn to use the PS3's complex architecture, design a very convincing AI, develop probably the best animation ever seen in a game etc etc!

HOW??? I find it hard to accept that as real!! Really! How did they achieve the impossible? :???:

CGI? No.

I watched the trailer.

You need to realize just WHAT you are watching.

I'll break it down for you.

How many characters on the screen? 5 or 6? Not exactly Lair with it's 1000's of soldiers or dragons. Not to mention draw distance...

Ruined city...very little need for detail(billboards, signs, lighting, wire, city stuff...)

Lets look at PGR4. It's also drawing a city AND 8 very high poly cars(80-100K) so PGR4 is drawing 8 cars + spectators + city(night/day) + weather effects. KZ2 is rendering what? 5 or 6 soldiers + city + ?

I would say PGR4 is drawing twice the poly's(easily) and I'm not sure what the latest frame rate is. Could be quadruple.

I'm not saying KZ2 isn't looking great. But to a trained eye, it looks on par with everything else I've seen.(on the consoles)

I dont have a trained eye perhaps or you are not convincing enough. PGR4 for example doesnt cut it for me as much as this even though my eyes are probably untrained

Yeah, but everyone and their mother had read that quote by the time this guy made his post. Just because I cite 'pre-pre-alpha' in a post doesn't mean I work at Guerrilla :p Anyway, this is OT, just saying to be wary of anonymous 'insiders'.

The game looks good even great but if you take a moment to go throught the thread and read pos and neg remarks from the game then you see it is quite a bit away from CGI (E3'05 CGI). This doesn't make it ugly becouse it still looks good.
The camera postitions are well chosen, the darkness makes it hard to see how much or how detailed things are except what is in the light.
Scripted events help to immerse the viewer (falling fireballs, explosion in distance and such) besides the immersive sound.

I have to fully agree although I would say this game due to artwork, animations and level design is in the top list amongst console games.
