One more thing that makes it hard to take that chart seriously. Bandai Namco includes amusement centers, toys, video production, etc. as well as games.

Bandai Namco's game division did about 2.8-3 billion USD which was still a 22.6% YoY increase due to Elden Ring's success. But that's still behind Toys increasing 33.9% for Bandai Namco. :)

So, they did do better YoY, but those numbers in the chart greatly inflate Bandai Namco's gaming division relative to other publishers.

The original article at least admits that the numbers in the charts aren't necessarily reflective of each company's gaming revenue ... which again makes it kind of useless.

That's got to be a bit concerning for the games industry.

1.5 million consoles sold (+41% YoY for the first 3 months of the year).

39 million games sold (-11% YoY for the first 3 months of the year) across consoles and PC.

That drop is more concerning when you consider that a lot of that was due to Hogwarts Legacy (over 12 million in the first 2 weeks, who knows what it's at now somewhere between 1/3 - 1/2 of all tracked games sold so far in 2023 probably).

A symptom of there being fewer AAA publishers and fewer AAA developers which is exacerbated by longer and longer development times leading to fewer and fewer AAA releases. And many gamers still turn their nose up at generally, IMO, far superior AA and indie games.

Chris Dring told since a few months no big release from Nintendo hurt a lot. Early 2022, they released a Pokemon title. And Sony released Horizon Forbidden West too Q1 2022.

Hogwarts Legacy and Resident Evil 4 did good numbers but not enough to replace Pokemon Arceus, Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring.

PlayStation 5 hardware unit sales have now surpassed those of PlayStation 4 on a time-aligned basis (29 months in market).
Thats quite amazing and hard to belive taking into account problems with availability.

Don Maverick must be still hunting the halls of the Xbox division. But seriously, yikes!
They have some major items they need to resolve, their content strategy has not yet paid any dividends, and the sandbar of having nothing 'super exciting' for years on end is taking its toll now.
And its a shame really, because they had some potential bangers that just missed the mark

That tweet should also be put into perspective.

The XBS series is still selling better than any previous Xbox generation. In terms of sales, XBS consoles > X360 > XBO > XBX.

The discrepancy is so bad right now due to a few factors: high demand for PS5, constrained supply of PS5 up until now and a sudden increase in supply of PS5s. Prior to the supply increase, they were basically neck and neck in NA.

It's not so much Xbox doing badly as it is PS5 doing incredibly well.

But they failed to capitalize on that constraint. It was a good opportunity for them to gain back customers.

Pretty sure that content is the main reason why Xbox isn't selling as much, power is not likely to be a factor here.

Before release of consoles, Jim Ryan told the idea of Xbox Series S is not a good one. Sony sold three times more than 100 millions consoles and they seems to be on the path to do it for the 4th time. They sold on average 115 millions consoles for the 4th first generation, I think they understand the console market better than Xbox division executive.

Each generation is different from the last, the economics of hardware costs is what spawned Series S for Microsoft. Playstation is the market leader by far and they don't need to do this. I'm not sure if that's exactly a fair statement when you're smashing your competition and people will pay the price for your ecosystem even as you're increasing the price of your console.

MS going into the market with consoles that cost more than playstation would just remove itself from the playing field. There's no near term cost reduction strategy to get Series X lower, so Series S is that strategy.

If it was only about consoles, Sony wouldn't be fighting as desperately as they are to keep the ABK merger from happening. Given the way the market leader is behaving, the secret in success is the latter.

There is a spike in PS5 sales now that there is availability. The real test will be this holiday when neither console is supply constrained.

I agree that MS needs more content and hopefully that begins soon, and likely will.
