Each generation is different from the last, the economics of hardware costs is what spawned Series S for Microsoft. Playstation is the market leader by far and they don't need to do this. I'm not sure if that's exactly a fair statement when you're smashing your competition and people will pay the price for your ecosystem even as you're increasing the price of your console.

MS going into the market with consoles that cost more than playstation would just remove itself from the playing field. There's no near term cost reduction strategy to get Series X lower, so Series S is that strategy.

If it was only about consoles, Sony wouldn't be fighting as desperately as they are to keep the ABK merger from happening. Given the way the market leader is behaving, the secret in success is the latter.

Again Xbox Series S sales are stalling and Matt Piscatella said this is not the case for Xbox Series X and PS5. The XSS is not supply constraint people don't want the product.

An important item to note is that Welfare has no actual information. He only watches various store sales listings on their site.

EDIT: This is not for chris1515!

Did I talk about welfare? I talk about what Jim Ryan said before current generation console release and what Matt Piscatella told about future of US console market about PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Xbox series s plays an important part of the market. It's because of that system I am even thinking of getting another Xbox system.

The true problem is that most people just don't want what MS is selling and how incompetent they have been at selling it for a long time. That is why they have been forced to buy third party publishers as part of their strategy to force the market to them rather than appealing to the market.

You can expect all of MSs traditional first party studios to fall by the wayside more and more in the years ahead

For the hardcore market, which represents probably the first 30% of the population. What about the remaining 70%? These folks are price conscience, how do you get them to purchase if the price point is above and beyond what they are willing to pay?

They are likely to have very low attach rates, and discounting heavily will not necessarily be beneficial to Microsoft. So Series S was created to address this particular market.
I wouldn't confuse this with having 0 demand, there's just no reason to get Series S because there is no content they want their yet as long as games are cross platform with last generation, they are the type to buy in at the very end - and this is where Sony is benefitting, there is content people want to play, so they are more than willing to upgrade.

I don't think they buy XSS, it seems they buy some PS5. They don't care about XSS. Casual buy Iphone or high end Samsung phone too. If it was the case PS5 wouldn't sell so good. In many country they raise the price and the console beat record sales after record sales.

feel like we are seeing the delayed effect of having months on end of zero first party titles to play for 2022.

Really hope they turn it around, but none of the titles I want to see released are coming this year aside from Starfield.

Those 10k jobs probably accounted for the ABK purchase nicely.

Their services number is up so clearly gamepass is still growing, to what degree is a mystery though

I am perplexed by how the media present this as a "struggle". Content purchase increased substantially this generation.
And that despite that the Series X is still supply contrained as it is evident by the hardware sales on the charts. The sales performance exhibits cyclical path as evident by the graph.
Of course it is going to be a problem if it continues a downtrend.

Yes. 2022 was a rough year for releases and MS content strategy isn't really going to hit its stride until Diablo IV & Call of Duty (assuming ABK), Starfield, and Forza Motorsport hit, likely followed by Hellblade 2 and Avowed next year. 40 dev teams have to be able to get 6 major releases out every year, but it's going to take time still.

Sony FY2022 Earnings: 6.3m PS5 sold (38.4 LTD); SIE achieves Record Revenues in FY2022; Biggest Q4 in PlayStation history in terms of Revenue.

Hardware:

- Sony shipped 6.3m PS5s in Q4 FY22:
  • Significant YoY growth: 215% YoY VS 2m units in Q4 FY21.
  • Slight QoQ decrease: 4.17% QoQ VS 7.1m units in Q3 FY22.
- Record-breaking Consoles shipments in Q4 for SIE. (Highest amount of consoles shipped in Calendar Year Q1 by any Platform Holder to my knowledge)!
- Sony shipped 19.1m PS5s in FY22, beating their FY target/forecast of 19m PS5s!!
- 38.4m PS5s shipped since launch VS 40m PS4s in the same Timeframe. Launch aligned, PS5 is currently lagging behind PS4 by 1.6m Units.

Network Services and PlayStation Plus:

PlayStation Plus Subscribers: 47.4m
  • Slight 2.16% QoQ increase (Up from 46.4m in Q3 FY22)
  • Flat YoY (47.4m in Q4 FY21)
The Network Services Segment revenue decreased slightly from ¥122.2B to ¥118.95B
This decrease is probably due to promotional activities to retain and attract new subscribers!
Everything leads me to believe that Plus has reached its ceiling!

During Q&A, they talk about multiples subject:

  • They forecast 25 million PS5 for next fiscal year. A record and it means 63.4 million Ps5 shipped 31st march 2024
  • But for reaching this number, they need to reduce M&A investment and use money for capital expenditure on PS5 production.
  • The profit decrease mainly because of Bungie acquisition and increasing cost of Game development
