The GT5 expectation thread (including preview titles)*

I have been alternating between the MotorStorm demo and GTHD just for the heck of it. I begin to appreciate their differences now. Will most likely get GT when it's out. It does beckon you to buy a steering wheel doesn't it ?

Having tried it with one it's a totally different game with a steering wheel! GT4 felt like an arcade machine in your own house!

Hope they support FF. Anyway, I should probably start an account at the official forum since I've been lurking there for forever!

It was a truly joyous moment when they scrapped the $1400 Macrotransactions version.

I see where this is going. I'm asking you. Can you please post one or two GT4 screenshots that you would like to be compared?

This is from GT4's photomode. Unfortunately I don't have access to my screengrabber at the moment, so I can't take a real in-game shot. But still, even in photo-mode you can see that the detail on the car has increased significantly. Also not to forget is that if you compare this on a big HD-TV, the difference is going to stare you in the face much more clearly.

Of course, there is still a matter of diminishing returns, but the jump is still very large.

I think you have the ability to pick good GT4 screenshots if you wanted to, but you're not doing it for some reason.;)

It doesn't matter which GT4 screenshot he picks, it's still going to show a rather large jump, especially in terms of the car models.

Well of course it will. PS3 is many times more powerfull than PS2. Even the resolution is five times higer.

I'm not sure what you're getting at there. There's nothing that can make GT4 models comparable to the car models in the GTHD demo, it's not even close.

Do you still dont now what diminishing returns means:?:  allow me to better show it to you.

GT2 for PS2

There is a significant jump in all the gen but the one from PS2 to PS3 is smaller than the one from PS1 to PS2.

Anyway it is fantastic how good looking the game is.

Just an aside, GT1, GT3, and GT HD (or better GT5) would be better to guage this. i.e. First PS1 GT, First PS2 GT, and first PS3 GT.

Or do GT2, GT4, and GT6 (PS3). I did a post ~ 6 months ago with a lot of games showing the jump from PS2 1st year titles to the same genre (and developer / franchise when possible) on the Xbox 360. The jump is indeed VERY large.

Considering the hurdles of next gen transitions and legacy, as well as how far a platform ages as developers actually create games with software optimized for the platform's architecture, they get better.

Anyhow, just my 2 cents.

Of course I look at deminishing returns differently. I think poly budget and textures are hitting diminishing returns. 1,000-to-10,000 polys is a bigger jump than 10,000-to-100,000 polys in many situations. Ditto the jumpe from 256*256 resolution textures to 720*720 (~ 8x increase) is more significant than 1024x1024 to 2850x2850 (~ 8x increase). Part of this is limitations of displaus as well as our eyes--we can only pick up so much detail.

The same applies to other parts of game design. e.g. a 200x200 point cloth (for cloth physics for example) can be reduced to 141x141 points and, algorhythm withstanding, 50% less demanding. So a processor with 50% the performance of another processor can create a similar effect by, to the eye, slightly reducing the detail.

This is why when new consoles ship getting an 8x fold increase in die size and memory, a 2-3x times increase in frequency help, but as much so new ways to do things and architectures that solve some of the bigger bottlenecks. If audio isn't a problem area, an 8x increase in transistor budget is wasted there--to toss that budget over to graphics or general processing.

And I think that is where we are at now: A lot of games are basically pushing on the same limits. Ported assets and tried and true techniques. And while there is nothing really revolutionary in 3D graphics, opening up new techniques can being pushing on areas we are already seeing deminished returns.

Interestingly, the one area that doesn't see this sort of increase is artistic skill and an eye for design. GT HD shows, above all else, a great eye for what should, and should NOT, be used/overdone in designing your cars. GREAT tradeoffs and as much artistically excellent as technically.

Err... Not to my eyes.

The only differences between replay and game mode are the camera angles and various "special effects" such as depth-of-field and motion blur that would interfere with gameplay. Everything else, including the frame rate, is more or less the same. This is evident if you play the game from the external view.

I need to correct myself. The track camera replays are 30fps, while car-attached cameras are 60fps. (I had a bottle of wine last night and my visual RC timeconstant was way too large for me to detect the difference! :) )

Here's my list of specs for the various camera modes in the demo.

In-game, internal car camera
- 60fps
- HDR tone mapping
- bloom pass

In-game, external car camera
- 60fps
- HDR tone mapping
- no bloom pass

Replay, internal car camera
- 60fps
- HDR tone mapping
- bloom pass

Replay, external car camera
- 60fps
- HDR tone mapping
- no bloom pass

Replay, track-side cameras
- 30fps
- HDR tone mapping
- bloom pass
- DOF
- motion blur

Other notes:
- every crowd member casts and receives shadows
- almost all shadows are dynamic and cast onto everything else (trees seem to be the exception--their shadows only cast onto the ground, not the car nor crowd)
- every shadow on the car is dynamic, and the car receives shadows from everything except trees
- the car interior is insanely detailed, and receives shadows too
- the driver's steering animations are fun to watch

GTHD one car "replay" shot.

 I'm seeing 1 car too. Did you see two ? Picture is small too. Isn't it better than Arwin's GT4 post visually ?

EDIT: Hmm... Phat says it's pre-rendered. So what's the point again ?

EDIT 2:  People are confusing reality, pre-rendered and in-game shots. What a mess.
