Sony Playstation Meeting September 7 2016 [PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, Rumors, Speculations, and News]

It's actually kind of weird that they didn't seem to put too much effort into selling PSVR. It was largely a PS4 Pro event. They sort of mentioned that PSVR would be better on PS4 Pro, saying the images would be more "crisp" or something, or have better framerate. So I guess they're expecting PS4 to use reprojection and PS4 Pro to render all of the frames? If that's the case, then I don't think I'd touch PSVR on PS4. Yah, I mean, October 13th release date. That's really soon. They really didn't use this event to hype it up for launch, but maybe that's just because of how hard it is to demo, without actually using it.

The UHD BluRay thing is only news because it's Sony. They're kind of seen as the flag bearer of BluRay, so it's just surprising. Personally, I'd buy consoles without optical drives. There's very little chance that I buy a disc-based game from here on, and zero percent chance I buy or rent a BluRay disc. Like, I'd rather save $5 and buy a bag of chips and a drink with my console than buy a disc drive I'll never use.

I think PS4 Pro is going to be incredibly successful at that price. It'll be interesting to see what % of the overall PS4-line sales that it gets. Is it going to be a 50-50 split with PS4 slim from here on? Either way, it's a good option for gamers at a good price.

@mpg1 post reminds me of the Xbox One S.... Now that both new models are priced, who is going to buy a PS4 slim for 100 less dollars when you have a machine more than twice as powerful at the same time?

Also, regarding your post.... They went all out showing Bravia HDR 4k TVs, and 4k TV content plus HDR, yet the console can't play 4k UHD....and given the circumstances that's a bit ridiculous.

If you have a 1080P TV the advantage of a PS4 Pro or Scorpio for that matter is immaterial. Its like buying a 7.1 receiver when you home is wired for 5.1, unless you upgrade other areas you can't take advantage of the difference.

Regarding 4k UHD if you have the internet bandwidth you can use Netflix just fine with the PS4 and I would imagine other streaming services will eventually provide similar access to content. I don't have the data but I seriously doubt 4K UHD is going to move the needle very far at retail, consumers are moving on from physical copies to streaming access to content.

PS4 Pro ^^^

PS4 should only support 1080pHDR with this new firmware update. I don't think Netflix has 1080pHDR content. So the HDR is only for gaming. I assume you can always use your smart TV for 4K HDR Netflix, this must be what Sony is banking on. People using the Netflix button on their remote controls.

Though personally I don't like the Smart TV editions of netflix. Slow to boot up. Crashes constantly. Drops a lot. It's just garbage compared to the other variants out there.

Sorry for confusion, I was responding to the notion that ps4 pro can't display UHD content

As much of a niche as UHD BR may be, it may still be a bigger market than VR.

So it could be a real curious decision, to make VR central to the PS4 Neo but not UHD BR.

Other possible reasons may include higher royalty costs. All the companies in the H.265 patent pool are demanding more.

The Christmas holiday season will be interesting. Sony must expect the $299 PS4 Slim to be a huge hit over the xBox as that price feels a bit high. Maybe discounts and bundles will help. Otherwise the $399 is becoming 'impulse' for electronics and a $100 difference isn't much.

Interesting.

I'd definitely take a PS4 Pro over the xBox One S. Too big of a power difference. Scorpio doesn't seem like a huge jump over the 'Pro' right now so I'm really interested in what angle MS will take. Last time it was Kinect and it failed. Hopefully they still have the courage to push the envelope and have something interesting to pair with Scorpio other than a spec bump.

Odd.

I expect they are going to create a UHD BR console at some point of pro's life just to add to an already great bang for the buck

Sony offers a streaming service as does Amazon and Netflix. Again I don't know what this size or demand is for physical disc but they may just be consciously decided to sit it out.

Scorpio @ 6.0TF exactly would have 1 PS4's worth of TF more than PS4Pro, 50% more memory capacity and 102Gb/s more memory bandwidth. That seems like a pretty big difference to me.

I'm not sure 6.0TF is in the cards but even if it is, it's not a generational leap and with diminishing returns, less so. The memory bandwidth has been the big question for me.

Still, these two machines remind me of the Genesis and SNES. The Genesis was out gunned by the SNES but was out earlier and had momentum. And in some edge cases could outperform the SNES.

Just an analogy, but that's what I see here.

They already had to pay for H.265 in order to support Netflix @ 4K. Not sure what the rest of the royalties for UHD BR support would add up to, though.

Yup the memory part could be the biggest gain. That's also if the system stays at only 6TFlops exactly . MS has a chance to make a real premium system for gamers at this point. Its going to be interesting to see what Scorpio becomes over the next year

If they are both using AMD and MS has a year newer console with more tflops , ram and perhaps better cpu and gpu then how would the ps pro out perform the scorpio ?

It wouldn't be anything like The gen/snes also I believe that was a 18 month long difference. This could be just 11 months diffrence

Didn't MS say 5+, not 6+?

Thanks for the quick replies. I still don't see that being enough for the general public to sit a year out.

This time next year though, MS can be pushing a game that looks good or better than the competition. That's a way's away though.

Still feels like Genesis/SNES to me.
