Uhh, how is he crying? He's speaking the truth. If MS hadn't shown off actual games til October and launching in November, you guys would be crying foul aswell.

Apparently you havent read whats been said and what this thread was about as my first comment was about just that.
Ok try to answer this and then we lay it down, ok.

1. What truth?
2. Can you explain what MS has to do with this, please do soo cause i dont get it.
3. You are referring to "you guys", and then the 360-launch. Again what has MS and the
- 360 launch to do with a thread called " Sony: No PlayStation 3 announcement at CES
- 2006? ".
4. And lastly who are "you guys" that "would be crying foul aswell".

1. That it's disappointing we haven't seen playable games yet.
2. MS is the only other next-gen console that has launched, and the most recent launch to compare PS3 to.
3. Read number 2.
4. "you guys" as in "gamers". This is a gaming forum afterall. Maybe I should have worded it better.

Dammit avaya, as much as I hate what you had to say, I can't argue with the truth.

I too don't see the purpose of releasing half-baked software for the sake of saying, "See, we've got playable games." Because the hype-hungry press no longer care about that. They want specs sheets and pretty movies. If a company makes the mistake of showing playable games, the press will rip it to shreds. You know, there used to be something wrong with the press ripping on a game that was six months from release for being, well, unfinished. These days, that's par for the course.

Apparently, hype gets hits. So I believe we'll see a new trend of over-the-top announcement videos and then we'll have games going through multiple delays while developers scramble to realize a game that the marketing department promised to the public. Kudos to the developers with the resources to actually pull this through and woe to the poor guys that can't live up to the grandiose promise of a 60 second pre-rendered marketing flick.

I really can't wait to see what Sony brings to fruition. Any way you cut it, it'll change the way companies approach unveilings.

I see 2 problems with the playable "blackout":

1. The press will grow increasingly impatient and generally pissed off that they have nothing to write about, invariably substituting uinbiased previews and "hands on" with sensationalist bullshit about how the PS3 is in big trouble etc. Becuase if youre not showing anything, youve got something to hide.

2. If youre not having negative spin put on the blackout, youre having the less 'unbiased' channels putting the positive spin on it, setting expectations that may not be met. "Sony is jsut waiting to unleash cosmic pwnage at E3, thats why we ahvent seen anythign yet!"

Sony usually does a very good job of controlling the meda, showing what they need to, etc.

MS' big problem was that they let devs have too much freedom with showing unfinished crap. They should have controlled waht was shown in the early going (i.e. shown some Kameo (after the big facelift), GoW, CoD, and PGR3 (after the facelift as well) ). In the end i dont think it hurt them becuase a vast majority of the public do only end up seeing whats on TV instead of scouring the net from TGS videos.

So by doing "nothing" i think what you do (espcially in Sonys case becuase they do this so well) essentially is give up control of the media, the hype, the expectations.

Damnmit Sony I was hoping for a CES PS3 presence followed by a E3 Launch!!!!!

After All A Fan Boy can dream, can't he? What does this mean?

There are 3 things I'm dying to hear from Sony.

1. Update on PS3
2. Update on Sony Connect/PS Online, the "umbrella" service that will unify PS* and other Sony's digital gadgets.
3. Update on Cell. Planned and real use of Cell from consumer perspective (Actual devices showing how Cell fits into Sony's DRM grand scheme, whether they can "talk" to each other, enabling of new consumer apps and UI if any, blah blah).

PS3 is done when it's done. It's not like I have any MUST-HAVE game to play now except to feed my geekhood.

CES was never on the PS3 calendar. Neither was any claims of when games would be playable. They will DEFINITELY be playable at the Feb show. That's the big kickoff event.

CES was once THE gaming show. The Winter and Summer CES shows, with Marty Chinn hoking his vids on usenet. Nowadays, it doesn't mean anything to the industry, but this event caught fire. The reason being Sony's emphasis on BD, and the fact that the PS3 is the anchor for that format. PS3 will be shown, I'm almost certain. I have no insider info, just that not showcasing the trump card for a format at an event where you want to highlight that format, is a pretty stupid thing to do. I expect trailers and slides and just more of the same. BD drive speeds? Hopefully. RSX info? I wish. But if it's not there at all, I would be extremely suprised...and perplexed. PEACE.

Wow the same website that posted this information about a sony rep stating that no announcements will be made now have say different. Read below.

"But there will indeed be a great deal of gadget news, including anticipated announcements from Sony on its forthcoming PlayStation 3 console, and from Intel on its new brand, new ad campaign, and new lines of chips and chipsets."

Has anyone even bothered to simply look at the CES website to see what's going on?

(you won't find Sony, or any of the other big players, listed under "gaming").

Bill Gates is giving a pre-show keynote tonight.
Howard Stringer is giving the opening keynote tomorrow morning.

I guess either of those may or may not say something new about their respective platforms - however I wouldn't necessarily expect them to do so.

Right now most of the bigger rumours have been around Google's keynote, during which some people are speculating they'll announce their own computer/OS/breakfast-cereal.

I'll save everyone the effort, just in case they think they'll see something interesting...

Results:

1 link to the event sponsors page on which the only mention of "playstation" is "US Playstation Magazine" listed under "media partners" - I couldn't see the number 3.

1 link to the Ziff Davis awards page where the only mention of "playstation" is in the description of who voted for the 1-up awards including "Official U.S. Playstation Magazine". The number 3 appears in several session times.

1 link to an exhibitor who makes Playstation carry cases. Their telephone number and booth number contain the number 3.

Seems to be a list of staff, either of Sony who make the Playstation, or magazines who write about it.

Is there actually any reference or relevance to PS3?

I just think its odd to have high level personnel at such an event if your not debuting any new hardware, but hey maybe its just me.
