Here's a prediction:
  • Sony bashers should find this ugly, completely downgraded from the superior GC version, and they will troll the thread.
  • Sony fans should find this to be as good as the GC version, and they will damage control any trolls.
  • Others, normal people, should consider this, at best, correct visually, for a PS2 game.

It's really not hot, though.

It looks close . In some pictures you can see its lower polygon counts and lower textures . But it looks really close . Not a bad port. Sony fans should be happy with it .

When i see it in motion i can compare it better

I think there will be noticeable differences in the outdoor and indoor areas, the GC version had these problems aswell. Just not as bad.

I would like to say its a good port, but seeing some of the other picks of ouside areas just make it very difficult to do so.

Yeah it looks pretty close, but you can tell some of the textures are blurier even in these small pics. We need bigger pics to really see what's lacking though. Seems like a good port though.

I actually think it looks pretty close, this is due to the fact that Res4 on the GC doesnt use alot of Bells and Wistles, it relies more on its artistic values than anything else.

Asides from the awesome fire effects, i expect the Ps2 to ba able to handle the rest very well.

The only think that worries me are the loadings.

Are there any directly (or fairly close) comparable screenshots between the two platforms, so we can see them side by side?

Damn! that looks as good as the GC version ;)

Seriously, it looks pretty good to me....considering the hardware its running on :) It might not look "as good" as the GC version, but it seems they are doing a pretty decent port.

I hate G-Spot's heavy compression. Makes it look unnecessarily fugly.

Looks pretty good from what I can tell though. Lacks a little bit of something.

Any news on the framerate?

I'm trying to get the two people who voted "as good as" to come forward that's all.

As long as Ada is hot, I'm happy. ;)

It doesn't quite match up, but the game is still a ways from completion (it's scheduled for holiday 2005 release, right?) and we're still lacking some good shots to make direct comparisons. ...and to see the game in motion, of course. It's good to see the game isn't a cheese-ass effort, though, as Capcom has been known to do that from time to time. (One would assume not from such a high-profile game, of course.)

I wonder what additional extras are going to make their way in. Anyone heard anything specific yet?

Not all of those are real PS2 pics. Some of them are exactly the same pics taken from the GC review of the game.

Compared to the GameCube version this version is not hot, but cold.

That is all. ;p

I am already shivering for those screenshots where the villagers carry torches around. ;)

It's hard to tell how much of the ugliness comes from jpeg-compresion and gamespot's shitty capture technique, but it looks pretty good considering. Definitely not as good as the original, the lighting seems much flatter and the textures blurrier and Leon looks much worse, but pretty good overall. Certain areas look worse than others, the village looks pretty good, but the shot of the el gigante in the lava room and the canyon with the bridges look horrible compared to the original locations.

The screenshots are good at hiding what really makes the difference, and what does make GC RE4 so damn impresive, and thats the Lighting Engine, it allready looks 'flat' in some screenshots and will be a lot more noticiable in videos or real feedback.

If they have been able to keep fire animations and number of charaters & framerate I would say its and ok version.

The lake setting (and what happens there) should take a great hit, and the famous ogre boss, heh I want to see Ps2 RE4 lighting there...

It's satisfactory. I have the GC version, but I'll probably rent this just to see if anything has changed.

LOL! How true, how true.

Is it just me, or are the screenshots really blurry at contrast points? e.g. the seams in Leons (is that who he is??) clothes, corners of his head, arms, etc... I wont even judge the SS for that reason... they look like they are really low quality jpgs with blur/artifacting. Unless there are some better captures there is no way to tell if this is a result of the game or the bad snap shots.

Anyhow, not much to judge until we see it in motion if we want to make a comparison. Some ports look similar in screenshots but poor in motion; or look poorer in screenshots but move really well. And since animation/smoothness are a large part of any game I will hold off.

EDIT: after reading the thread it appears everyone else thinks it is compression issues. Bad GameSpot!!
