Predict: The Next Generation Console Tech

The only way we'll see a surprising jump is if someone goes with:
1) a > 250W design or
2) goes for a large 20nm chip

1 could be possible, but it'd end up a console as big as fat PS3 or more, and louder too. And 2 could be possible but I think that would rule out any 2013 launch and end of 2014 would be it.

You can get 4tflop SP from a 7970 Ghz Edition.

My 4x 7970's are running at 1.3Ghz each so one could argue that I have over 16+tflops of SP performance.

Obviously you are clearly in the minority for most PC gamers, but in the realm of enthusiast your not uncommon at all having a quad set up like that.

My point is, your PC is much different from a console. They still obviously have to account for making the box relatively small with a form factor while making the innards a pretty big jump from the previous console. Nowhere near Wii U's needlessly small power draw and what have you, but still within a limited scope.

Taking that fact into account, what we get next year is still going to be impressive once we see what devs do with it.

2013 launch is not confirmed yet. It is very likely that they will launch in 2013 but not confirmed. Lack of leaks might mean lack of official document lol.
You speak as if you've been around for a while ;)

I find it very strange that people are forecasting a 2013 launch when both parties haven't in any official capacity announced the consoles, no names, no nothing. If we don't hear prior to E3 2013, then I really doubt we'd even have a 2013 launch, and 2014 might be in doubt.

For people who have followed console launches in days past, how often is a console officially announced in the same year that they are released. I can only think of the Saturn.

Typically, you get an announcement in one year at E3 or another big event maybe TGS, this will be the console name, launch season (such as "winter 2014") maybe some specs, some demo videos, maybe something playable, often tech demos. Then the following year you get the big blowout, you get more details on specs, launch games, launch date, launch price.

Where are we in this general timeline with the next PS/Xbox? We don't even have an official name.

but who knows, maybe both companies are going to pull a sega, and announce/release pretty much simultaneously.

the next gen console gpu power will be between hd 7950 and gtx 670 . every developer is designing nxt gen games ( watch dogs ) based on gtx 680 .

They would know if they were also supplying an ASIC or a small processor that goes into the kinect, to put the processing cost into the accessory instead of the console.
That doesn't mean they would know if Microsoft plans to bundle Kinect with every Xbox. You can be sure that any supplier only knows what they need to know.

If they are told that they must produce X million of APU for September, and the same number of Kinect ASIC also for September... that would be a pretty good hint. (I'm really trying here :))

I bet Kinect won't be bundle with every durango, they want sell their console to everyone first, and it's not like people can't buy the Kinect(or other peripherals) later

PSvita was announced the year it was shipped. More importantly however, 360 was announced the same year it shipped. So that's precedent for Durango.

How can they bundle the kinect with every xbox while keeping prices competitive? They would take a huge loss. One of the reasons Wii U has shit hardware other then trying to make profit early on, is the gamepad controller being expensive and thus a balance was required for budget.

Then again I don't know how much it costs to make the kinect 2 but if they're aiming for the most powerful console plus adding in the kinect seems unrealistic and very costly.

Everyone puts their stock into that Kinect thing because it was apart of that document that was circulating a while back.

Of course my guess is that it was merely one of a list of ways forward for the future of the Xbox brand, made by a brain storming guy, not really apart of any concrete plan forward. A lot of shit is probably not going to be like that in actual implementation.

Peripherals don't work, because they're just that peripherals. If the Wii-mote was just a controller add on for the gamecube it wouldn't have been as successful. If the Kinect was guarenteed to be in every box, then developers can build games and know that it will be there, it changes everything.

The smartest thing that MS did was include a headset with every 360 sold, this made voice chat ubiquitous.

Everyone puts their stock into that Kinect thing because it was apart of that document that was circulating a while back.
While I know it was in that document, I think some people believe it will be in the box is not because of the document, but because the Kinect has really resonated with people. Microsoft has also pushed it quite heavily recently, and they need a "next gen" control mechanism to stay in the game.

To me it makes sense, but maybe it won't happen. I expect it to happen though. Not that I actually like the thing ha ha... but if they go with some metro style interface, it may be a better experience with Kinect than with the controller. I also expect Kinect Voice to be heavily relied upon, and a part of the OS. Mix that with "smart glass" and more horsepower, the next gen Xbox will have more checkbox's ticked than the Wii U. That will help them market it and hopefully sell it.

I stand corrected, I guess we'll see :) I still have my doubts it will happen in 2013 :)

It's not from jeff_rigby anyway

Maybe i should use this link at first?(but i don't know how is this "uuse5" dude)

Just to finish out why we do not welcome certain noise on B3D... You know someone is utterly clueless when even Charlie tells them they're wrong and jumping to conclusions.

Indeed. You've narrowed the potential leak to a handful of people.
