Killzone 2 pre-release discussion thread

I don't see why every game that comes out has to 'do something new' or 'innovate' isn't it enough that its a fun game to play and looks pretty?.

That's cool, I like lots of games even if they don't add anything new as long as the total package is nice, like COD4. It seems though that many are unhappy with KZ2 reviews that claim it doesn't add anything new to the genre, so I assume I missed something. For example, Crysis added that nanosuit which I thought was neat and allowed the game to be played in different ways, maybe KZ2 had something new like that that has not been mentioned or overlooked.

Do you have the slightest doubt about GC being able to create a Coop Killzone?
Yes I do have slightest doubt. Obviously they didn't implement it given the time. Plus as they've acknowledged it, it's not trivial to add coop, especially if you haven't designed the game around it.

I think they are unhappy because other FPSes got free passes with little to no innovation.

Apparently the cover mechanic is really great, which is actually something quite significant and new for FPS's. Cant really think of any other games that do this while staying in first person the whole time. I dont really see why this is not cosidered a big innovation, especially when compared to other games that are said to have been big innovators in the genre.
The multiplayer side seems to bring a few new things to the table also like the warezone(i think) game type.

Like Betan said, its the criticism not being applied to all the other games out there that is bothering people.

The GAF folks were debating over this. Might as well play the game for yourself and find out. From what I can gather, there are some twists here and there. Not sure what to make of them yet.

It's interesting that the review embargo date has already passed on this game, yet it's not on store shelves until the end of the month. Maybe the schedule must have slipped at the last minute, and they already had copies out to reviewers and were committed with the media buy...

It went gold on Jan 21, nothing has slipped. I think the early reviews is just a strategy.

As for adding something new to a FPS, everyone should play Timeshift and Fracture... What did Halo 3, COD4, etc add?

Same here. The Dualshock 3 is a sub par controller for shooting games. Especially if you come from the 360, it will take some time for me to adjust.

BTW what's the shoot button? R1 or R2?

I play a load of 360 FPS's and the DS3 feals great to me, i think what you ment to say was it is sub par for YOU ;). The only thing i have a problem with, on 360 and PS3, is clicking the sticks by accident while aiming/moving. Not sure but i think killzone uses the stick clicks for zooming which is a great pain for me, should be able to get something i like if i play around with the config though.

If you have problems clicking in the thumbsticks you are hardly a console shooter veteran. Halo 3, Gears of War, and basically any other shooter beside the CoD series uses that method to enable zoom (and COD4 uses it for other things anyway like meleeing and sprinting)

The DS3 is sub par controller for shooters, compared to the 360's controller. Hence all the PS360 controller mods.

What's the new cover mechanic? Cover isn't really anything new. Brothers in Arms relied it on extensively. And that wasn't even the first FPS to use cover extensively.

I'm guessing KZ2 must have some new revolutionary type of cover mechanic?

A friend of mine worked on Fracture and it's a shame it didn't sell better, but frankly, it's far more important to create a solid, fun shooter (COD4, Halo 3) than spend time on gimmicky features like terrain deformation.

Completely first-person.

IMO the cover system, the clan system are the noticeably huge additions, but to me (in the beta) the mere movement system was an incredible step forward for FPS.

Realistic weight for the guns, realistic grenade tossing, an absolutely phenomenal use of the sixaxis for sniping all contribute to a far greater sense of immersion than other shooters offer. Especially the sniping, its really great.

Besides that, I think a lot of people are upset because nobody can name another recent FPS that even arguably added as much, and certainly no one can say with a straight face that most shooters are judged on such seemingly harsh criteria as KZ2. And its not like the production values don't add anything, nor like 32-player intense class-based games are a dime a dozen on consoles either.

Brothers in Arms pulled back into third person view when in cover, which would probably be most of the time. Having a totaly first person cover system would give a much better sense of immersion, a feeling of actually being there holding the gun yourself, which is the whole point in FPS's in the first place really. Its a step in the right direction and i can see it influencing the FPS genre as a whole in the future.

No game innovates enough and every game innovates so much that it oozes that "I tried too hard" feeling while redefining the genre. Makes sense?

Just wait until you play the game. Trying to read reviews while they compare it to other games or try to determine if it's innovative or not is just hair pulling frustrating because nothing will ever be consistent.

Demo is out tomorrow. Downloads will ensue and hopefully you all enjoy the demo!

In-Game Music has me rather interested after In-Game XMB was implemented.

I know that (aside from KZ2) MK vs. DC utilizes it out of the box, and older games (like Burnout:paradise) patched it in..

It's great to see it.

I'm really curious if it's "Free" now, incorporated into the OS. Like the Friend's list and Trophies..

I think it's interesting they opted to not include it in the SP campaign. Guerrilla really does seem to be heavily focused on conveying their story and game just the way they want to. (going so far as to bar complete customization of controls, removing First Person Cover from multiplayer, and refusing to allow In-Game Music in SP).
