Killzone 2 pre-release discussion thread

EDIT: Don't get me wrong. I think the audio in KZ2 will be impressive ! But I just don't think the audio part came through in all these relatively low quality trailers (sound quality speaking). None of them are on par with the game's original sound yet people all over the net loved the trailers. So they must be doing something right about the visuals. ^_^

I think the reason why most reviewers talk about the graphics is because that's the only thing their testing rig can show. I doubt testers have a nice surround sound setup that they can crank up the volume to actually be able to appreciate the audio. As I said the graphics look great but take away the sound and the cinematic experience is almost completely gone. In fact take any blockbuster movie and turn down the audio, there's a huge difference. It's like the difference between watching the film vs being submersed in the film. Maybe it's just me but when I watch the HD KZ2 videos without sound it's pretty but not very submersive at all. Watch it with a nice speaker setup and it's like being in the middle of a battlefield. Also from what I've seen there's no film grain effect in the game. There are post processing transparency effects but no film grain effects.

Is velocity based object motion blur a very expensive PP technique?
KZ2 uses, and benefits greatly from it, but it's not a technique I see in many other 30 hertz games. Why dont more action heavy shooter games use the technique?

that had co-op via a patch on launch day , also that was removed two weeks before release do to bugs. It was allways announced and was supposed to allways release on the launch day

So their choice was either to delay the game, or fix the issues in a patch between gold and release. Good choice. Makes a change from the games which ship with broken co-op modes that are later fixed in patches.

Online co-op was added to Kameo. Co-op quickplay was added to Guitar Hero 3. I can't think of any more this-gen examples.

It is possible , however I don't know how likely it will be , for a fps game you really need to design around it , just adding a second player will mess up the flow and difficulty of the game.

Can it happen ? Sure why not , will it happen ? I doubt it . Does it need to happen ? Not really , cod4 was a fun game with no co op. Not every game needs it .

Do you have AI companions throughout the game? They could pull a Halo 3. I wasn't crazy about how that was done, but people who played through 4-player coop found it fun.

Apparently you fight alongside AI for some of the game, and fight alone for other parts. Until the game is released it will be hard to say in what ratio.

I think they made a wise choice leaving out Co-Op. Honestly, co-op this gen can easily break a game, and I feel "co-op" needs to be an entirely separate mode, similar to Gears 2 Horde, or R2 Co-op. The 'add a second player' co-op just isn't really that fun to me because it breaks the game. The others add far more strategy and replay value, IMO.

That said, I think it's a joke that reviews have been knocking the game for no co-op, as well as saying 'it does nothing new'. So ridiculous.

Well... The Ballet of Death took away the original sound and replaced it with an Internet quality music, the result is impressive nonetheless.

There you said it. If real films become significantly less immersive without sound, it simply means that sound is an important contribution. It does not mean that visual is not the other significant contributor. To date, none of the Internet materials showcase KZ2's sound. That's why people's praises were directed at the visuals and gameplay mostly.

You're right about film grain though. KZ2 does not have film grain effect. But the end result is still stunning. I especially like the lens flare (I like the way light reflects off my "camera").

That's a lame excuse for lacking an almost standard feature.

You're right. I'd much rather have it tacked on and half finished to break the single player game. I mean, why should they focus their resources on an extremely polished Single Player and Multiplayer experience, just do them partially and include the whole kitchen sink right? Insomniac already fell victim to this, as did Epic Games.

Live and let learn? No, no exceptions!

It´s not a standard feature on some of the games i find the best on the PS3. And it´s not "lame" to make the choice to focus on a Single Player game without CooP instead of having to either cut back on somethings they wanted in SP or having to use resources on a complete xtra set of maps and story.

The word "bad" comes across way less provocative than lame btw.

So, basically, you would rather have a co op, which would:
1) Take some time to implement, which would probably cause a delay in the development.
...or
2) Implement it without almost any polish and shorten the development time on single player and regular multiplayer, which would severely influence game's quality.

No thanks, i would rather have awesome single and multiplayer experience, instead of 3 modes out of which maybe 1 would be a great experience.

I don't care about coop in Killzone 2, especially with the bot support but lack of coop doesn't reflect good on technical wizardry of GG.

Just found info on whats in the demo.

The content of the demo will be the first 2 sections of 'Corinth River' the first level of the game (beach landing and warehouse)

I can't recall if we knew this already so i posted anyway :D
