Kameo news (8/26)

I'm not getting my hopes up for Kameo. Last time I played it at E3 the gameplay left a bad taste in my mouth. But that was like 4 years ago....on Gamecube :p

Rare might be able to make some improvements without too much hassle. Normally art assets are created at high fidelity and downsampled to the target hardware. If they have the original high-order source models in their modeller (which they should have on backups forever), they can output higher poly models with a few buttons clicks, and a few more clicks to get a normal map. Add some better shaders and improve the texture size, it'd be quite an improvement for what shouldn't be too much trouble. As long as Rare don't need to delve into their graphics engine at all I'd expect a XB up-conversion could get a cosmetic update quite comfortably.

If it were only the models I would not be worried, but the MP environments are... well, you can see the shots above.

As for the source models, the problem is if the models were designed to look good on the Xbox they will NOT look as good as a model with the Xbox 360 / a 360 game engine in mind. That said, we do have some pics of the source models it seems

You can compare that with the ingame MP shots

They are the same model and same uniform (different color). Besides the obvious drop on poly count, the colors have a lot less contrast and the skin looks really bland and is missing the really nice skin shader, not to mention the lighting/highlights and excellent soft shadowing in the PR/source images.

And even then the source art is really flat... like it was designed with the Xbox1 in mind. Contrast this image (from the games CGI??)

Not the curves, depth, and general high detail. That reminds me much more of some of the cutting edge engines like UE3 games like GOW and Endless Saga or some of the other new engines like in Alan Wake.

Obviously with a top of the line GPU and 512MB memory they are definately on par with the new GPUs. One issue with raising the res on the textures, adding a lot of new shaders, increasing the lighting quality, bumping up the poly count, etc... is they would have to optimize all of that and bug fix all at the same time. I really feel bad for them if they have to do all of that! PDZ is probably a port, a first gen title, and so forth and that must be taken into account. If it is CLEAN looking + has killer gameplay that is all that matters :D

I am rooting for Rare on this one... but it seems to me that the source art seems to indicate that this wont look much better than a really nice Xbox port. I could be totally wrong though. The fact Kameo has not looked leaps and bounds better though is not making me wait for miracles. Kameo looks really nice, but it looks substantially the same from E3. Of course...

Unless...

The footage IGN raved about was SINGLE PLAYER. In browsing the media there seems to be pics that are pretty clearly MP and others that seem to betray SP.

Obviously with the goal of 50 players on screen and huge maps the MP would have to have toned down graphics. But there is always a chance what IGN saw--and what MS has really not shown to the world--is the Single Player. Take a look at these shots.

They seem to contrast with the MP shots a bit.

Maybe Rare is holding out and all our worries are related to the MP which is meant to have killer gameplay first and foremost.

I will be excited to find out :D

The other option acert is that the build at the mtv confrence was older .

You figure the mtv show was shot 2 weeks before e3. They most likely used a build older than that so they knew it wouldn't crash , most likely had people playing that build and lvl they let them play at the show to see if there were no show stoping bugs .

So from when these ign guys saw mtv show to seeing the game behind closed doors it could have been almost a month mabye even slightly longer .

Then at e3 they were shown a finished lvl with the art work resampled into normal maps of higherquality and the lvls fixed up .

The game sounds great with 64 players maps that change size depending on player totals and of course lvls in which you can change the lay out simply by blowing up some walls . As long as its on half life 2 or doom 3 graphics lvls it should make for an awsome launch title

I'm conserned about stuff like this:

I mean what the hell is that; "normalmaps and specular highlighting are coo!!11!1"? And judging from the flying robot guy in that pick and the 3 in the next pick in the album, that is singleplayer.

IGN:
"May 18, 2005 - Forget the crappy screenshots you've seen. They completely misrepresent the game.
...
Today, I saw a demo of Perfect Dark Zero running on a Xbox alpha kit (a PC) using an old ATI graphics card, not the final GPU from the Xbox 360, and was told the game was only using about 25% to 30% of the system's full power. And Perfect Dark Zero looked incredible. Incredible. It looked nearly as good as Gears of War, which, in my humble opinion is the best looking 360 game of the show so far (I saw that running in realtime too). So, simply put, Perfect Dark Zero shocked me. "

;) :D

quoting an article from months ago hardly does anything to ease my mind about screenshots that were posted just the other day.

that screen is probably from a very old build as they are similar to the shots in the gallery from 6/05.

I do not think ANY shots of PDZ have been released from any build after May of 2005. I could be wrong but evidently Rare has not dropped any screens on anybody. they seem to be playing it close to the vest for now.

oh, and I hope I'm not wrong because those images are not pretty. :D

Yeah I hope you are not wrong as well, but my main complaint isn't really the low polycount or low res textures which would be explained by less than final hardware; my issue lies with the art direction or rather the complete and utter lack there of.

I thought this thread was about Kameo?! And i thought there were already 2839 threads on PZD?! :???:

Someone asked, "Why is Rare deflecting attention away from PDZ" because we are getting a lot of Kameo stuff a NO PDZ media. Before E3 and at the MTV show PDZ was _THE GAME_ and now nothing.

So since everyone can agree Kameo looks really nice... we are kind of wondering, "What the heck happened to PDZ and why is Kameo blowing it away".

True, not totally on topic... I guess it shifted from Rare's Kameo Project to Rare in general and "whats up with downplaying their other title". Not that Kameo is BAD, just that consoles have very few FLAGSHIP titles. PDZ could very well be that type of title. Kameo should sell ok, but it is not a "killer app" in general. That said, Conkers was just awesome looking, and Kameo as been a pretty solid port. PDZ did not look as good, and the fact they have PULLED it makes you scratch your head.

It would be like DMA pulling GTA4, after hyping it and having a bad showing at E3, and force feeding us "Space Station Silicon Valley 2". And while a Space Station Silicon Valley 2 would be really cool it surely is not a major seller like GTA4.

So after everyone nods and says "SSSV2 looks great..." they continue "... so what happened to GTA4?"

Back on topic:

I really like the lighting in parts of Kameo. The polycount/design in some areas is pretty low and looks "blocky" like in the dungeon BUT the lighting and shadowing are really really pretty!
