Japan Sales Thread

edit: Ok I figured how you counted them, but there has to be a error somewhere Are those LTD figures you posted in post 91 from Media create also?

I've just checked: I took them from Kotaku, they took them from Enterbrain, and I can't follow that trail any further than that (I'm limited in what I can and can't access).

X360 still beating the PS3 in japan?

Maybe the annoucement of FF being multiplatform changed the tides?

Except Japan's the only place it's not multiplatform -- MS has repeatedly stated they have no plans to release FFXIII in Japan, and even if they do it'll be about a year late.

Apparently it's a combination of a library better suited to Japanese tastes on the 360, really slim pickings on the PS3 plus the people waiting for the new console, announced for the 30th.

Wasn't there 2 JRPG's released on 360, including one by SE? I think once the new bundles come out, the PS3 will be back on top, but things will be very close now. Once FFXIII comes out though, I think the PS3 will see a nice bump.

Ahh, I see. So the reign will probably end at 6 weeks. Still, it's pretty surprising that MS was able to be ahead for this long.

I wonder how sustained the sales for the new PS3 bundles will be. I think there's still a chance for 360 to climb back a few weeks later.

Well, it's a guess. The new bundle dropped on the Oct 30 and it was announced during GC, wasn't it? We should see some different results next week. The PS3 still will have a pretty poor software library for Japan, I'm somewhat baffled that it actually sold so 'well' for so long -- what are Japanese people playing? As I understood, even as a BluRay player the Japanese have better choices. In fact, I wonder if the lack of BC will hurt the PS3 sales -- PS2 games still sell incredibly well, according to the chart I posted.

Well, the 360 has one more timed exclusive coming: Last Remnant. After that it's fairly slim pickings for the 360. (Edit: completely forgot about Star Ocean 4, out in Feb, which should give the 360 another boost.) The PS3 has the Naruto game which is already out, or out next week, White Knight Chronicles in December, and then the FFXIII demo in March 2009. After that I don't think there's anything particularly noteworthy, either.

I think it'll fluctuate, but I think that for 2009 we'll see what we saw for the most of this year. Both consoles doing horribly, the PS3 slightly ahead. I mean, the 360 is selling more than the PS3, but it's still selling only 7k. It's only slightly better than it was at the beginning of the year, the PS3 is just much worse.

I agree with this sentiment. Having a "winner" with these sort of numbers is like fighting over stale crusts. Japan has chosen where they want the future of gaming, regardless of what MS or Sony would like.

Turns out the numbers I posted were not Media Create. Here are the MC numbers:

PSP 60,467
Wii 24,292
DS Lite 22,965
Xbox 360 7,844
PS2 6,962
PS3 3,931

Looks like the DS is getting destroyed by the PSP, anybody want to guess as to why that is?

X360 is doing really well too compared to PS3.

New PSP model 2 weeks ago. Just coming off the high. But so far this year, the PSP has done well against the DS, in Japan.

I also believe these are the first week of sales after the DSI announcment. Unlike the USA and Europe japan is getting that in a couple of weeks. I'm scared to guess the numbers for DSi when it releases.

Actually, the DSi is out this week. This is probably just people waiting for it.

Home consoles are selling quite poorly in Japan even the Wii whereas everywhere else Wii is flying at a ridiculous pace! I don't know how accurate those Vgchartz numbers are, but according to them Wii sold on the week ending 25th about 25k in japan, 183k in others! and 260k!! in NA. Those differences are quite odd if you look at the LTD numbers from all these territories, which are much closer to each other. Maybe the japanese market is getting saturated of the Wii?

470k in one week is pretty good in October...

I don't have the numbers, but I've read that the Wii hasn't really grown (maybe shrunk slightly) YoY in Japan. It certainly hasn't succeeded in selling upmarket games there; the easy (maybe incorrect?) conclusion is that Japan has moved onto portables -- or maybe they're just not ready to abandon the PS2.
