It seems that the only thing pegging back Nintendo’s remarkable sales achievements at the moment is its ability to get hardware on the High Street – but that hasn’t stopped the DS Lite smashing the UK weekly hardware sales record that it had set only the week before.

Last week Nintendo’s handheld sold 212,584 units – a fair chunk more than the previous weeks sales record of 191,104, according to sales data from UK stats body ChartTrack.

Until now the PS2 had been the long-standing record holder, following the 184,360 units it sold in Christmas week in 2001.

Nintendo UK's general manager David Yarnton stated: “With its wide appeal and unique software, Nintendo DS continues to expand the gaming audience and continues to appeal to everyone.

"The vast range of software being created for both avid gamers and new gamers of all ages has ensured a wide variety of unique titles are available. With New Touch! Generation title, Sight Training, and more traditional games like The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, we are looking forward to an exciting Christmas season.”

In addition to all of this, Nintendo’s other big success story, the Wii, sold over 100,000 units last week – and its total sales have now surpassed those of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, despite arriving on the market almost a year after Microsoft’s machine."

Very impressive for Wii, it overtook 360 in its strongest European market in just a year!

.... & for a wider view we have this ..

Sony's PlayStation 3 proved less popular than its predecessor in the US last month. According to market watcher NPD, the PS3 fell way behind the market leaders: Nintendo's DS Lite and Wii.

NPD's numbers for November retail sales put the PS3 down at 466,000 units, around 30,000 fewer than the 496,000 PS2s that crossed counters during the month. These totals put the two consoles on sixth and fifth place, respectively, behind the fourth-placed PSP, purchased by some 567,000 folk during the period.

Microsoft sold 770,000 Xbox 360s, NPD said, well behind the 981,000 Wiis acquired in the US last month. Topping the chart: the DS Lite with sales reaching a staggering 1.53m units.

Still, Sony can take some joy from the fact that the PS3 showed by the biggest year-on-year unit-sales growth: up 285 per cent on November 2006's 121,000 units. The DS Lite's growth was almost as great: up 234 per cent following year-ago sales of 458,000 units.

In Japan, Sony's home territory, the PS3 hasn't proved a strong seller either. Sales have dropped and flattened through the past three weeks while demand for the DS Lite, the Wii and the PSP have jumped sharply, according to figures from local market watcher Media Create. ®

NPD numbers are covered in the NPD thread. Sadly this report doesn't give any idea of consoles sales, only being a 'record announcement' and not a full list of sales.

The UK's gone wii and ds crazy in the run up to christmas. I was in a local gamestation at 4:30pm watching a queue of tired but relieved looking parents line up to buy a shiny new DS as fast as the assistant could unpack the delivery!

wii play is like gold dust....
