Formula 1 - 2014 Season

The biggest problem now is that there's an engine/PU freeze for the season and Merc have stolen a march on everyone by moving the compressor/supercharger away from the turbine thus saving space and not pooling all the heat in one place.

Engine freeze is really bad and now it shows the most, IMO. This just ensures that Renault & Ferrari PU will never catch up Mercedes this season.

At least not without some cheating by saying for every update that reliability is improved.

They all had the same amount of time to develop the engines, who's fault it's it that Mercedes have clearly been smarter? Nothing stopping the others coming up with the same idea two years ago.

That essentially means that Ferrari should write this season off, on paper and in reality.

Now, the question is if the changes will pay off in the long term.

There are provisions in the rules for engine "performance calibrations" in season, though the exact nature is cloudy to me, but the engines are supposed to have comparable performances between the manufacturers. The engines rules also have "safety" changes, and sometimes the manufacturers will sneak some performance enhancements in under the banner of safety.

[Edit] Apparently there is a "reliability" clause that gets exploited, though I'm sure there would be a safety one as well.

No one is arguing that Mercedez doesn't deserve the advantage, the question is how the others are supposed to catch up. If Mercedez had 3 cars, the rest of the field might as well just stop* racing.

We have had plenty examples during the formula one history of teams getting big advantages and many examples of others being able to catch up. But the way things are now it seems harder (to me at least) to re-gain lost ground and as a result advantages are pro-longed to a such a length it is damaging to Formula One.

*yes it's putting it to the extreme, but so far there hasn't been a single race where Mercedez were pushed to really show everything they have.

There's no reason the other Mercedes engine team's can't play catch up in reality.

It's no different to brawn bearing everyone to the double diffuser our red bull mastering the blown diffuser and engine map.

Actually it is, in those cases any team could just develop their car to utilize same inventions (assuming you could figure it out), in current case only Mercedes teams can play any catch up, Ferrari & Renault teams are out of luck 'till the end of the season

And just to add. The testing needed on whatever parts that teams wants to "copy" is inherently lacking thanks to the test "ban".
Before the test ban there would be countless of laps done on new equipment. When Schumacher went to Ferrari he introduced endless testing to get that team up to speed, hell he even tested with broken legs.

Mercedes have tested their engine with the special bits for ages, even if the other teams are already working on the same solution and may even have it working they still would need a lot of time before they can get the same reliability..

and another thing about the limited testing
Magnussen joined formula one with so little testing it's almost a miracle he (and other young drivers) can keep up, I think it's very understandable that so many drivers ends up being slow in f1 even though they were fast every where else.

Unlike running cars at all, which is limited to the prescribed test days, some mileage on straight-line tests and a limited number of camera days, running engines on dynos is unrestricted.

I am very well aware of that, Red Bull still showed up with a racer that melted :)

EDIT: And Mercedes used a Dyno as well, for years to get where they are

And that's to do with the overaggressive packaging of the engine on Red Bulls car.

They all do, that's how they test and develop engines (any engine) ahead of time. Remember Renault were the first one to be touting their new F1 engine tech and the first to send out clips of the engine noise from the dyno.

Also note, that a lot of performance is not dictated by the pure mechanical elements anymore, Renault are claiming that as yet they've not been running the engines at peak and are developing the software for better harvesting and boost.

Too easy for Hamilton. Nico seems to have been broken in the last race he's been nowhere all weekend.

Or he just couldn't find settings suiting him well enough on this track.

Kimi apparently had some gear issues, shifting to lower gear had some problems
