Formula 1 - 2014 Season

Out of curiosity, what happened to the "you're not allowed to push others out from track" rule? It happened several times with different drivers and sometimes same ppl did it more than once

You mean the stuff around turn 4/5?

The Mercs will take some catching this season. Let's assume they both ran the full allowed fuel flow after the safety car. They pulled a 6 second gap after 2 laps. That's a phenomenal speed advantage and certainly indicates there is a lot more to it than simply having a better engine.
Or is it? Maybe Merc just gave their customers their 2nd grade engine. I don't think aero only could have 2s advantage, especially on race trim.

AFAIK, it's only been clarified on the straights, not corner exits. It's always dangerous to be on the outside after the apex as at that point, you're already pretty much committed to the corner, the entry speed and both will drift towards the outside. Even if it was a deliberate "closing the door" maneuver, it's hard, but IMO legit.

Being slightly behind, I wouldn't expect my opponent to yield place unless I was significantly side by side at that point and with a larger speed differential (and well within the visibility range of the other driver). I think it's also down to having a psychological edge. If you know you have a driver next to you that won't lift, you might drive differently [and leave room] than if you feel you do.

Btw:

Article 20.4 said:
20.4 Any driver defending his position on a straight, and before any braking area, may use the full width of the track during his first move, provided no significant portion of the car attempting to pass is alongside his. Whilst defending in this way the driver may not leave the track without justifiable reason.
For the avoidance of doubt, if any part of the front wing of the car attempting to pass is alongside the rear wheel of the car in front this will be deemed to be a 'significant portion'.

It might well be just because both of the cars belong to the same team and the team decided to not complain / argued that they felt that they didn't lose any time/places. And the fact that it was providing some of the best racing in a long time.

What about Luca Marmorini? He's the head engine guy and he's dropped the ball on the power unit this year, no?

Getting rid of LdM won't fix Ferrari's problems, the only thing that solves is their flatscreen TV bill when he throws the remote at the screen in disgust every time a Mercedes powered car overtakes a Ferrari.

Ferrari are in the best shape for years as a car company, I don't see Di Montezemolo going just because the f1 team sucks

I agree.

Is Mattiacci a long-term solution? Who else is suited to be team principal at Ferrari? Ross Brawn? Pat Fry? Flavio Briatore (LOL, idiotic IMO)?

They need someone tough who can stand up to Di Montezemolo and his interference. Cannot see Ross going back. They would probably be better putting Rory Byrne in charge of the team. Not sure he'd fancy it but cannot be any worse than a Di Montezemolo yes man.

Rory is 70 years old, don't think that's a good solution. They could maybe have picked him as an interim dealie, but they went with Mattiacci.

It's proof if how ridiculous hard it is to compete in formula one.
It's a gigantic machine that has to come together within a limited time to develop brand new car.
Sure, they had time to develop a new engine, but as they did that they had to compete in several championships, of which they were close to winning one. And then there is a chassis where the best guy* for many years is on a competing team.

It's a massive undertaking and I think the limited tests are not helping at all. It's like you have one shot, and if you miss you have to play catchup for a whole season while others just have to keep the momentum.

*Afaik only one driver was able to compete with Adrian newey, and he is in coma.

The biggest problem now is that there's an engine/PU freeze for the season and Merc have stolen a march on everyone by moving the compressor/supercharger away from the turbine thus saving space and not pooling all the heat in one place.
