Formula 1 - 2012 Season

Damn that Lotus, simply not enough straight speed, they would have needed the double-DRS there, Hülkenberg just flew past with superior straight speed from his Force India

Everyone is blaming Grosjean, what feed are you watching tongue_of_colicab? or are you just doing the usual, blaming Hamilton for everything.

Grosjean turned into him, there was a little bit of tarmac Hamilton could've gone on to if he saw the idiot coming, but without going on the grass and potentially having a crash anyway I doubt he could've avoided him.

What did I say yesterday

Double DRS makes little difference, they just set the car up for too much downforce.

Grosjean got 1 race penalty, aka no Grosjean in Monza (unless Lotus complains on the decisions and manages to get it through)
Lotus's "3rd driver" is Jérôme d'Ambrosio, who drove for Marussia last year

What sucks about the penalty was one of the reasonings stewards gave on it - "It eliminated leading championship contenders from the race" - why the f#¤k does it matter where the people that got eliminated are in the championship?
That's like saying "feel free to drive a damn carmageddon or destruction derby race out there, as long as you make sure you don't crash into championship contenders"

Though I'm quite sure they wouldn't have said that if Alonso got away from the crash

I'm guessing the problem is that what happened massively advantaged Kimi, his team mate, in the championship. Before the race Kimi with 5th and 48 points behind. At the end of the race he is up to 4th and only 33 points. Can't have a driver taking out championship contenders to advantage their team mate.

Yeah but intentionally vs this case are two different things

Grosjean does seem to be missing some spacial awareness at the start of races. Maldonado on the other hand seems to be missing some brains.

Button was untouchable, Vettel drove a stormer and Kimi maxed out his car, but the day was tainted for me by the accident - it was really scary.

Note to Alonso: next time, qualify away from the rabble. :D

Kind of feel sorry for Grosjean.... I know the accident could have been fatal (thank god, it wasn't!), but surely there was no intend to cause such a crash. Although, that swipe to the right wasn't quite necessary (I'm sure not on purpose). IMO, right after he got back to the pits, he should have watched the replay and come out with an apology taking the blame for causing the accident. That would have been a lot better than to say "not sure yet who was to blame - will have to watch the replay first", even if perhaps the outcome of the punishment might have been the same.

I personally think Maldonado last year at Spa deserved a race ban (deliberately provoking and pushing cars off the track) - but not an 'accident' such as the one Grosjean caused yesterday.

I'm also a bit perplexed at Maldonados punishment. In truth, I don't like the guy much, but IMO, the penalty regarding his jump-start should have been relevant to the Spa race, not next week. For all I care, give him a 10 place grid penality in Monza for his collision with Glock, but not a 5 + 5.

How would you have made it relevant for Spa since he retired on lap four?
I think the officials were quite busy with the big crash until Maldonado retired, had he still been in the race, I'm sure he would have gotten a stop and go or something like that.

True, but by having a DNF, he kind of punished himself really. No one does a jump-start on purpose - it was a mistake and despite changing the starting order, I'm not sure that jump start caused much harm and it surely would have been penalized appropriately (drive-through or stop-and-go). We've had many instances where a driver would have been penalized (i.e. by overtaking off the track), but didn't, because he dropped out of the race before a *penalty could be issued. In these cases, no *penalty was issued for the next race either.

I think jump-starts and purely race incidents with no harm done to others are a bit different than collisions or agressive driving that have a direct impact on the championship and others. I think there should be a distinction which *penalties carry over to the next race. A jump start with no harm done to anyone but himself, IMO is not one of them.

EDIT: *LOL... same typos with penality over and over again...

Sunday was particularly hectic with Kobayashi b0rking his start in 2nd position while Maldonado jumping start and Grosjean getting a great start, - all in the 'even' side of the starting grid, compressing the field of cars.

IMO, they should consider running/flying starts for select tracks, Spa being one of them. In the past five years, only 2010 hasn't produced retirements/contact in the first corner.

Cheers

I personally think that a jump start, especially as blatant as Maldonado's does deserve a quite severe penalty, even if it isn't dangerous. 5 places for the next race sounds about right to me. That is still peanuts compared to the penalty sprinters get :)

In the end a five place grid penalty for the next race is actually much less than what a drive through or stop and go would have penalized him at that early point in the Spa race.
