Digital Foundry Article Technical Discussion [2022]

I always love watching their yearly round-ups.
I'm always entertained by the lists. In the spirit of discussion, I'll add my thoughts to the list.

Games I would remove: Dying Light 2, NFS Unbound and GT7.

GT7 and DL2 have high points (they mentioned them in the video) but visually they are inconsistent games. Dying Light in particular may be technically impressive but it doesn't present well. Too many of it's rendering aspects don't hold up against other games.

NFS Unbound isn't doing anything special at all. Personally, I would put Stray over NFS if it was just about filling a spot on the list.

Positions I would change: Plague's Tale Req and Portal RTX

In short, I think PT:R deserves a top 3 spot and Portal RTX doesn't. Im more impressed with the totality of PT:R's geometry, lighting and environments than I am with Portal RTX path tracing.

I understand that path tracing is computationally expensive and this implementation is doing a good job at approximating light bounces (among some other things), but...meh. The animations and environments are simple by today's standards and I think that needs stronger weighting in their system.

With all of that said, I still enjoyed the video. Watched the entire thing with my partner, a non-gamer, who was also perplexed at Portal RTX's inclusion in the top 3 after seeing the other impressive games on the list.

Its all subjective when it comes to graphics. I can somewhat agree with The-Pissartist’s opinions however Portal rtx sure would get a top 3 spot, for example.

Maybe we can get a list from Rich and Alex before end of the year so each platform is covered?

Fully agreed with HFW being number one. Every other game they listed has some caveats like the bad characters in Plague Tale and the motion fluidity in Callistol for example.

HFW does everything right. It has detailed enviroments with a high polygon count, good lighting, superb water animation, crazy character design and animation. On top of that, it runs at 60 FPS with great image quality now.

What is somewhat depressing is that Callisto protocol is in top 3. The game launched in terrible state on pc and Xboxes even now XSX version is huge disappointment. This tells a lot about quality of the code and yet is in the top 3. I don’t disagree with the decision and I think it’s fully understandable just disappointed the we are getting such unpolished and unfinished games.

What do mean by different platforms? Isn't this list represented of everyone's opinion?

John covers Playstation, Alex PC and Rich Xbox/middleground (not sure).
Alex doesnt even really play FW untill the pc release as explained in the video. Before DF had these individual best of the year graphics lists, that was better i think?
Now its basically John’s list, which means no multiplat would make it to the nr1 spot.
Plague tale could have been there as so many YT comments note.

I thought the list was about right tbh. Callisto is the best looking game for me this year based on what I've seen if it, but it's right it wasn't given top spot due to its launch issues.

And while Portal has simplistic graphics, the lighting is simply insane, and an absolute visual feast from what I've seen in the videos so I think 3rd place makes sense there.

I'd have still liked to see Requem in the top 3 though. Perhaps as a joint 3rd with Portal.

I still don't understand how this is basically John's list. Alex is also in the video and I assume these choices are based on some sort of consensus.

Alex explains himself in the video not being really into FW yet. Individual DF crew lists where more intresting.
FW could be number 1, it could be 3, it could be not on the list at all. Graphics are highly subjective and individual, hence the previous years three lists or more.

There was never 3 graphic list, there was fav game list from all df members and one graphics one, from what I read at least John will also have this year his fav games of 2022

There is overall consensus but it doesn't mean each individual DF member agrees with this list verbatim. Alex for example would never put Forbidden West in his top 3 but probably considers it reasonable.

reasonable selections!
I would have put PT:R higher of course and swapped one of the top 3 out for it. But best graphics is entirely a preference thing.
