and on top of that , Sony had to increase the price of the "slim" ps5. That suggests that a ps5 pro would come out between 500/600 usd.

I am really interesting to see what pricing moves ms makes for the holiday. I haven't seen anything pop up so far, however a lot of things like amazon/ woot sales are announced hours before.
Haven't other consoles cut prices by the third year?

Even if sales are about the same or even slightly ahead to previous consoles, can the current sales rate be sustained at original prices from here on forward?

Last gen pricing dropped slower outside of MS removing kinect. The ps4 launched at $400 and ended at $300 over the course of what 8 years? This gen it seems like prices are going up

Why would prices go up?

They should be reducing costs on the APU with fab efficiency improvements and inflation has been declining this year and Chinese economy has been slow so there shouldn't be demand pressures on components.

Now that supply is not an issue, if sales stall, that should be setting off alarms for them. We're a long way from when people were paying several hundred over retail because of scarce supplies.

Price only go up in Europe because of the Eurocurrency weakness. October 2023 UK number

EA Sports FC 24 was comfortably the best-selling game of the month. Sales of EA's football title were 10% lower than last year's FIFA 23, although some of that can be explained by the brand name change and the fact there was a winter World Cup last year to help generate excitement around the sport.
Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Mirage is No.2, beating Spider-Man 2 by a very narrow margin (and Assassin's Creed Mirage was on sale for two weeks longer). Mirage's first four weeks on the market are over 49% lower than what Assassin's Creed Valhalla managed. Mirage is billed as a smaller, more classical take on the series and so there was no expectation that it would compete with Valhalla. Compared with older Assassin's Creed games, Mirage sales are 22% higher than 2018's Odyssey and 6% higher than 2017's Assassin's Creed Origins.
Onto Spider-Man 2, and the PS5 game's launch was strong, with the first two weeks up nearly 30% compared with 2018's Spider-Man, and almost three times higher than 2020's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Compared with last year's big PlayStation game, God of War Ragnarok, the first two weeks of sales for Spider-Man 2 are 28% lower. However, that's because God of War was also released on PS4. If we focus on just PS5 sales, Spider-Man 2 outsold Ragnarok by 8% after two weeks.
In fourth place is Super Mario Bros Wonder, although the Nintendo game may have charted higher as this data does not include download figures (Nintendo doesn't share digital numbers with the charts company). Launch sales of Wonder are double that of 2017's Super Mario Odyssey (when the Nintendo Switch install base was much, much smaller), nearly 59% bigger than 2020's Super Mario 3D All-Stars and nearly 53% bigger than 2021's Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Nintendo has announced that Super Mario Bros Wonder is the fastest selling Super Mario game in Europe.
PS5 is up 143% year-on-year in October (11% up month-on-month), Switch is 20% down year-on-year (10% up month-on-month), while Xbox is down 52% year-on-year (down 20% month-on-month)

Yeah, Microsoft Series sales are a dumpster fire for sure. GamePass and day-1 first-party releases on PC have truly hurt XB hardware sales.

I doubt that PC has anything to do with it.

We'll have to see if Christmas can turn things around a bit in Europe for Xbox.
I don't know if there is any historical precedents for a console to turn things around after the third year and make a territory competitive. Even when you look at consoles with historically good software lineups, like N64, we knew by year 3 who won that generation.

Outside of the UK, there is next to no consistent advertising of Xbox across Europe. I would bet good money there are people living in the EU that have heard of PlayStation and never heard of Xbox. It really is that bad in some places. If watch football in Europe, you've heard of PlayStation. Microsoft simply have made no effort in some countries. Nobody goes out and buys a product they've never heard of and because sales are so low in some countries, you'll never see an Xbox in a store. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

MS is aware of everything they're doing. It's not like Phil would come to these forums and say: "Wow! The beyond3d crowd is right! We should advertise in Europe. I've never thought of that."

They likely have market research that tells them how much they can realistically accomplish outside US/Canada/UK. Maybe research that tells them they need an even better market proposition (ie. 4-6 AAA games per year) before they waste money pushing something that won't sell more at this point in time.

Companies have turned things around in this business. I remember the "Nintendo must go 3rd party discussions" after the GC, and then after the Wii U debacles. Now look at them. And no one has the money that MS has to make things happen. If buying ABK for $69 billion isn't MS doubling down, I don't know what is.

MS' stated goal is 60 million units by 2028. Are they on track to do that? Mostly. They'll be at 25+ million by the end of 2023 and eventually the S will be $200 with 3 months of GP.

Also, one month doesn't make a new trend. Let's see how things go at Christmas in the UK first before we hit the panic button.

Market research cannot reliably predict how Microsofts' fortunes might be in Europe if they bothered to advertise here. If you have no presence in a market, you have no vectors to research it. Market research isn't magically omnipotent. :???:

In the Activision-Blizzard acquisition Microsoft's whole position for how they faired in Europe was basically: we have made zero effort and cannot compete. Giving up before you try is adopting a defeatist position. Microsoft have got to used to being the market leader by default. They simply don't know how to compete any more. In the last 20 years they have only lost markets and market share. Their current fortunes are fine, but their long-term outlook with this attitude is poor. They seem to exist to having a historical monopoly in market spaces and putting off being squeezed by their competition.

It must cost Sony a fortune to advertise in all the big football matches and competitions.

And they also advertise on F1 as well?

Julien Chieze is the biggest french youtuber and he asked at Paris Game week to the Xbox for France and south Europa why they did not do TV ad and he said they only have the budget for Twitch and youtube ad. And this is the result, they downsized a lot of european Xbox team and this the result. And they wanted to reach 25 to 29 millions Xbox Series after Novembre 2023 and they won't reach the lower target.

According to Julien Chieze, the gap is no longer 90-10% but 93-7% currently in favor of PS5.

Remember, Oscar Lemaire communicated less than a month ago a gap of 90-10% in favor of PS5.

2023 in France:
PS5 – 93%
XBS – 7%

2016 LTD in France:
PS4 - 1.06M - 77%
XBO - 0.31M - 23%

A black friday deal in uk

14 Ps5 for 1 Xbox Series X and the XSX is a bit cheaper, they added 5% discount for move the stock of consoles. Xbox is bleeding marketshare this year eveywhere and Sony is very aggressive.

There's no such thing as predicting markets that well and targeting super efficiently. If there was, no product would ever fail because the market could be identified and targeted perfectly to know exactly what will sell. Take for example MS's attempts to win Japan with 360 - they threw lots at it and couldn't make any headway. They didn't do a bit of market research beforehand and decide they were doomed from the off. Similarly Nintendo didn't do MR and discover Wii U was going to flop and go ahead anyway. Similarly MS didn't do MR across the world before launching the huge XBO and finding it struggled outside of NA.

Companies make products, do some MR to get some ideas maybe, and then put it out there and see what really happens, from every level. There's no other way to forecast the markets that well. And given no perfect insight, other goals are chosen more on gut and best guesses and corporate culture. The costs to appeal to other European markets can be predicted. The responses can't. MS feel it's not worth the gamble, unlike their expensive gamble on Japan with 360 where the potential gains were enormous and it was worth trying.

Lol at those of you who don't believe in market research. It's comical.

The arrogance that you all think you know better than Phil is astounding to me.
