If it does, it'll be close. X360 moved ~1.66 million units in Japan. XBS consoles have now moved ~169 thousand units in Japan. Considering it's been about 1.5 years since launch, at this rate it would take another 13 or so years. :p

I think the more interesting question when it comes to Xbox for Japan is how well Xbox Cloud Gaming might do in Japan.

The best is yet to come. Cheaper / Smaller series s will only drive more sales as will the expansion of game pass with more eastern games

The Xbox series consoles will most likely outsell all other xboxs combined by the end of the generation
Outdoing the 360 will be hard for them to do in Japan without big games that caters to the Japanese market like the 360. Though the approach on the Xbox should be more like Scarlet Nexus and Tales of Arise where the games are released world wide instead of like Persona where gamers in other regions have to wait. I have more to say about this but that would be entire thread in altogether for some other day.

Those Japan numbers are quite positive, and clearly show a changed trend gen over gen so far, even if the raw numbers are small. Maybe my cockamamie(?) theory that Series S is going to sink the good hardware advantage the Series X brought is false. Assuming this isnt some sort of pent up demand to buy anything because of the chip shortage. But I'm not really sure why that would be so regarding Xbox in Japan.

In GPU's FINALLY the prices are coming down massively after many false starts. We have seen the Series X be in a lot better stock as well. Some signs of the chip shortage loosening it's grip. It seems worse than ever in cars though (I know not the same chips or nodes)

The thing that has me negative on Xbox now is they seem to maybe be sneakily phasing out Live (1yr live not available on the digital store since 2020, only far more expensive 3 month plans. 1 yr still available via cards at retail for now). Personally I want at least the option to pay ~$5 a month for online service and buy individual games ad hoc. I think if Ms is going to move to defacto forcing everybody who buys an Xbox to pay $500 for the console then $10+ a month for Gamepass forever (which 100% is what the shortsighted bean counters are going to want), that could begin to hurt sales, especially in less wealthy or connected overseas markets. I am not saying GP is a bad idea, I'm saying it needs to remain an OPTION IMO. I suppose this could be partially negated by f2p games no longer having any paywall, which AFAIK they made that change recently?

We've yet to see what Devs are part of their "We're working with over 200 Japanese developers" may they can bring back a little bit of the 360 time.

Game pass.

It will be very easy for eastern devs to put their game on game pass to hit large international markets. The japanese install base will just be the cherry on top. Mobile gaming is big in japan and some of my friends have asked me about xcloud and are now game pass subscribers. They mainly play on their phone but at least two of them have bought xboxs to take advantage of it at home. The series s gets brought up a lot as a second console to the ps5. They talk about xcloud and being able to game on the go and then also the backwards compatibility. Some have never own xboxs and so there is a wealth of content they never accessed before

GameStops in Germany are running a Trade-In sales promotion for Xbox Series S until May 5th. If you trade in a PS4 Pro the cost is only 20 euros! https://news.xbox.com/de-de/2022/04/08/trade-in-gamestop-xbox-series-s/

Just in time for Easter, Xbox and GameStop have a particularly nice surprise for you: Between April 8th and May 5th, you can trade in your used Xbox One S (including accessories) and other consoles as part of a GameStop trade-in campaign a discounted Xbox Series S one! The balance to be paid varies depending on the console you traded in – so if you trade in an Xbox One S, you only pay 99.99 euros* for your new Xbox Series S.

I would not expect much cheaper. Will be squeezing blood from turnips. X will come down much easier with much more room to come down. That will make S look silly so they may hold X price artificially high, losing even more sales to Ps5 then. Ps5 De will be a FORCE in time. Right now Sony has no need, selling instantly so they will not produce a lot of DE. A knowledgeable sales gamer on the web told me he doesnt expect price drops this gen at all. I dont think I agree, but it's at least plausible. Lowest I could ever see for S until maybe yr 6-7 is 249. And that's big maybe.

At the least S first need bump in storage.

I agree with the sentiment, unfortunately I don't have data. Would love to see what their data scientists come back with in terms of what would drive more sales - a price reduction or a storage increase on Series S. I still happen to believe it will be the price reduction. Storage increase is probably not high on the list of importance for those looking for a cheaper machine anyway.

So maybe offer a 500GB at $199 and 1TB at $299. That would be an interesting A/B test. Intuitively I think the $199 would dominate though.

I disagree here. The ps5 and x will drop in cost but so will the series s. The series s will hit $250 and then $200 before the ps5 de hits $300 and the series x hits $400. Then I believe the S and X will get replaced with zen 4 + rdna 3 machines as the refresh. With the s replacement coming in at around 8tflops and the x replacement at 20tflops. At that point the s and x get phased out.

Considering that the Series S is a digital only console, I can see Microsoft being more willing to subsidize that console than they would the XBS-X which could lead to it having larger price cuts relative to BOM than the XBS-X would get.

It would be easier if MS waited and made the new S as powerful as the old series X. Less SKUs to support. Then they just have 4Tflops, 12Tflops and 24Tflops (dare I dream) :)

2025 I'm thinking. We don't even have next-gen only engine games yet. IMO they shouldn't release new hardware until Hellblade 2, Forza 8, Fable Next, Avowed, and Perfect Dark are out the door, for starters.

Well duh, not to be captain obvious but obviously it would dominate
I assume you can plug in extra storage, so why would you need to add extra storage to base model (sure its nice from a tidyness factor, but I dont think thats a major factor in peoples purchasing)

OK I looked yes you can add extra storage

hmmm not sure here, sounds like you cant use any brand expansion card, surely if it matches the specs you can use a cheaper version or are they doing an apple and literally checking to see if its an approved brand.

I think it's going to keep going for the next few months. My understanding is that Sony has a few large drops of consoles coming but not enough compared to MS. So unless demand drops off Ms will have a good year. They do have a games showcase in June and some big games for the later half of the year

Using rdna 3 and zen 4 they could have less flops but a faster more efficient console, esp if they add infinity cache.

they desperately need a good June showcase. It's been 1.5 years, to date, a lot of games have been announced with no progress reports attached to them. Still waiting for a real sight of Forza Motorsport as well as Fable etc. Hell I'm still looking for Everwild.

I don't think you will see Fable. I think the big games for them this year will be Forza , Avowed , Scorn , Redfall , Senua and Stalker 2. I think you will see some other games that weren't announced yet

I would love Avowed yes.
