Switch sales 80,000 UK and 313k in Japan. The latter number is very similar to Wii, Wii U, and PS4 launches. The former number though is double Wii U. Caveat, I have no idea how much supply constraints factored in to any of those numbers.

I'm not a big fan of the Switch, I've said I could see it selling significantly better than the Wii U, maybe up to 2X as much. The thing is 2X as much as Wii U would still make it a fairly failed console though. But I guess it's the right direction.

Yes, smaller launch than Wii in the UK - it's hardly surprising, several factors, first true new console hardware for 3.5 years and as WiiU was such a flop there will be some out there that just skipped Ninty last time and just waited for this. I think also there's the element that this is a hybrid - so almost replacing the 3DS and WiiU in one go.

I think it's an ok start but I can't see demand staying high for long, this price is too high...Wii had a significant advantage there.

Good number in UK for Horizon Zero Dawn and Zelda

Curious numbers for Zelda. 80k Switch were sold in UK opening weekend. Therefore at most 80k NSW Zelda's sold, which means less than 80k for Wii U. That's sounds like a pretty small percentage of Wii U owners buying Zelda. Have a lot of owners upgraded to Switch? Or a lot of Wii U owners just don't care for Zelda? Seems unlikely. Or are the hardware numbers really that small?

IIRC I saw somewhere on Neogaf that the vast majority of BOTW purchasers were indeed on Switch >Wii U. Over 70% on Switch I think?

That core zeitgeist moves incredibly fast. It's probably just like 4-6 million users TBH. For an upcoming example, I could see Scorpio versions outselling XBO S ones very quickly. Once you get that most active million or two on Scorpio that's all it takes.

It's the same reason when Halo sells into a small, new console base (like Halo 3) it sells 1.5 million right away. Later when it's releases into a tens of millions install base, it sells similarly anyway. 10 times the install base doesn't even mean it sells 1.5X as well. There's a much smaller group of active game purchasers within any given install base. Maybe it's like how on youtube if your channel has 2m subscribers, your individual videos might get 200k views. Most of your subs are not going to be active.

I very much doubt that, WiiU was a complete failure and died a long time ago and Scorpio is a premium product that lives alongside XBO - I really can't see that being the case

I think the craziest news is GTAV selling just below bloody Horizon and Zelda. What the actual fk!

Probably in a UK weekly chart, individual sales can have a big impact. If one or more major chains put a game on sale, it can shoot up the charts relative to normal.

Course GTA V is ridiculous anyway though.

Good news 2,6 millions sales for Horizon Zero Dawn after two weeks

SAN MATEO, Calif., March 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) today announced global sales of Horizon Zero Dawn exceeded 2.6 million units during its two weeks of launch*1. The PlayStation®4 (PS4™) system exclusive, developed by Guerrilla, was released globally beginning February 28 to widespread critical acclaim. Praised for its unique world design, wide array of strategic action and fascinating story line, it instantly became one of the most celebrated games of the current generation. The impressive launch also makes Horizon Zero Dawn the best-selling new first party IP launch on the PS4 system to date and Guerrilla's biggest debut ever.

Horizon Zero Dawn is an exhilarating new action role playing game where you play as Aloy, a young hunter on a quest to discover her destiny among the remnants of the ancient past. The game is set in a lush, post-post-apocalyptic world where machines roam the land and mankind is no longer the dominant species.

"We knew Horizon Zero Dawn was going to be something special, so to see the incredible critical reaction to a brand new game world translate into this level of sales is really gratifying," said Shawn Layden, Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios. "Guerrilla has created a game that is nothing short of exceptional, and the reaction we have seen from fans – from hours and hours of gameplay streaming to endless photo sharing – shows just how impactful it has been."

"We're thrilled that Horizon Zero Dawn has been embraced by critics and players alike. Developing the game was a labor of love, so it's extremely satisfying to see that it elicits the same passion and enthusiasm from the gaming public that we felt during its development," said Guerrilla Managing Director Hermen Hulst. "This is only the beginning of Aloy's story and our exploration of the world of Horizon Zero Dawn, with the team already hard at work on an expansion to the story."

SIE is committed to the continuous expansion of the world of PS4 through the introduction of attractive software titles and network services.

*1 Includes both Blu-ray Disc™ sell-through quantities and download version sales on PlayStation®Store. Sales data in SIEJA regions collected 03/02/17 – 03/13/17, in SIEA regions 02/28/17 – 03/12/17, in SIEE regions 03/01/17 – 03/12/17.

Good news 2,6 millions sales for Horizon Zero Dawn after two weeks
Really good for a new IP starring what is essentially a ginger.. (wait for it) woman ( non-sexualised at that) as the protagonist! The financial succes is good for the industry, and it hopefully paves the way for more (IMO) interesting characters. I have nothing against complaining women in general, but the success of the last 2 tomb raider games means we will probably get a lot more where that come from

"strong ginger woman killing awesome robot dinosaurs"

Right from the unveiling, success was inevitable.

2.6 million, that seems quite solid. Sequel confirmed I guess.

It's worth noting that when platform holders give sales, they have the advantage of being able to include digital.

Best selling!...new IP...from 1st party...on PS4. How many new first-party IPs on PS4 have there been? Just launching later to a larger install base means you've already got a good chance of setting a new record. Not saying the sales aren't good, but the PR message really isn't all that strong. ;)
So they beat Knack... and....

Driveclub. The Last Guardian. Resogun? The Order. Until Dawn. The Tomorrow Children (must give that a look!). RIGS.

I imagine percentage sales is higher for one of these older titles. :p

2.6 million is a big number on it's own though.

I remember MS announcing something about Forza Horizon 3 so I checked. It was announced on Feb 13 Horizon 3 had sold 2.5 million. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/forza-horizon-3-sells-25-million-units-entire-seri/1100-6447805/

But considering Horizon 3 launched in September, and had Sep, Nov, Dec to rack up holiday, and of course that it's 5 months vs 2 weeks, etc etc, yeah. And Horizon has done well and had good legs itself. Of course, the other Horizon has double the WW install base.

OH BTW the other day I realized my prediction that PS4 Pro would cause PS4 to win NPD every month after release until Scorpio, which is 4-0, is doomed. I totally forgot Switch is a thing. Obviously Switch is going to win March handily at least.

In my defense though I dont think it really counts because Switch was not on my mind. It was prediction relegated to PS vs Xbox :)

Bloodborne too but EA hope to sold between 1,8 millions and 3 millions first week of Mass Effect Andromeda on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The HZD number is huge for an exclusive game and a new IP...
