Coming from CELL optimised games engine to x86 based engine wasn't easy for Sony studios...
I am not sure about that. Killzone SS was ready for launch, Infamous not long after (and this game already used a handful of PS4 own hardware tricks) and they ported TLOU very quickly with a very small team. Seems to me their main teams are adapting very quickly to PS4, for their first game, compared to PS3.

I think that they are getting more ambitious than previous iteration (UC4, Horizon, God of War rumored to target also PS4K, Dreams, Tomorrow children) which would explain the delays with those games at least.

Gran Turismo 7 scheduled development time is still perfectly normal.

Porting TLOUR was not as difficult to do as a new games.

KZ SF and Infamous SS were difficult to do but possible because doing an engine on a new architecture and at a same time do a new franchise at the same time would have been a too difficult task for Guerrilla and Sucker Punch.

For Sony Santa Monica they always come late in a hardware cycle and one the game was cancelled never reaching the quality Sony wanted.

It is like Rime, play test were boring and they send people from a french developer to help but it was never satisfying...

On PC everybody seems really happy that 1 company has a complete monopoly. Even going as far as boycotting developers who don't want to pay 30% to the monopolist..
If you ask those people, they will says PC is the most beautiful, diverse and creative platform to have ever existed.
So a monopoly is not always bad (for gamers),... unless you are the developer :p

You're talking about Apple, right?

Complacent? It is the same thing than last gen a console begin to turn things around with exclusive title into third year of existence (2009 for PS3, 2016 for PS4...)

There were a little more exclusive games before 2009 on PS3 than before 2016 on PS4 but market has changed shooters is a genre dominated by third party release and car game market shrink...

AAA games is more expensive with a team of 200 people in Guerrilla or 300 in Naughty Dog without counting outsourcing art team and development of a AAA games is a little bit longer (two years on PS3, 3 years on PS4...)...

We were told prior to the launch of PS4 that development time would decrease bc it was easier to work with, we have less first party software in spite of that. I'm not saying Sony today is complacent but the risk is there if they are 30mm units ahead of MS. I'm a Sony guy and always have been but I'd be lying if I said I was satisfied with the offerings at this point in time on PS4.

I don't have a PS4, but I'd expect the quantity of releases on PS4 has nothing to do with complacency, so much as it being more difficult than ever to make games, and incredibly risky financially. They seem to be going with quality over quantity, and that's probably smart. Last gen was very much a transition towards multi-platform games dominating the sales charts. It's continued on.

But back to the sales charts, having one massively dominant platform is probably not good for consumers. You need competition to push companies to innovate. If Sony were the only player, they'd do the bare minimum and just rake in your cash.

Naughty Dog were a little bit more than 110 for Uncharted 1 now they are more than 300 and have 7 to 10 outsourcing art studios helping them.

See Gnomon video they said artists, game and level designer have much better tools than last gen but it takes more time to make a game.

AAA development is very difficult now. Think about pre 2009 PS3 and you will see it was not much better...

There were more diversity some studios were closed(Studio Liverpool, Evolutions Studios, Zipper Interactive, Incognito Entertainement...). Some genre are dying with much less sales than before(car games...)...

Some shooter series with not enough sales were cancelled(SOCOM, MAG, Resistance, probably Killzone...).

2009 was the Ucharted 2 and Killzone 2 years... We will soon play Uncharted 4 and Ratchet and Clank.

We can play Bloodborne, Drive Club, Infamous SS and First Light, The Order 1886, Street Fighter 5, Gravity Rush remastered (poor sales of Vita not many PS4 owner play the game), MLB franchise, Until Dawn and some AA title like Resogun...

Before end of next year we will play Horizon Zero Dawn, Dreams, The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2, Ni No Kuni 2, The Tomorrow Children, RIGS, GT Sport, World of Final Fantasy, FF 7 Remake temporary exclusivity, Detroit Become Human, Wild, God of war 4, Sony Bend open world survival horror, a new Sucker Punch franchise, Drawn to death, Kill Strain, PSVR worlds, Nier 2, Ni Oh, Guilty Gears, Alienation, Matterfall, Shadow of the beast, No Man Sky...

Later probably other From Software collaboration, a Kojima game, The Last of Us 2, Maybe Savage Starlight, many japanese games console exclusives, other franchise entry of western Sony studio...

I am very aware of all that, that doesn't change the fact that for me I'd like to see more diversity and quantity in Sony first party for PS4. The reason I've owned all of Sony's consoles since PS2 is because of the very good titles available in a library with lots of variety, so far the PS4 feels more like a 720 in the sense that it is more about superior multiplatform titles than anything else. There are lots of titles in the works and that is great but me so far its not there yet and I hope success doesn't change their approach to providing entertainment moving forward. I honestly don't think it will but then again nothing last forever.

They are making God of War 4. Their big secondary project went down in flames few years ago, causing a army of devs to be fired.

With Rime which was another development hell it was not an easy beginning for Sony exclusive game.

At least we will maybe play The Last Guardian...

The big failure of Sony was on shooter side, they never succeed to do a big FPS sellers and they poached marketing partnership with Activision for Call of Duty and Destiny...

The next Naughty Dog title will probably take less time to be done. They will not change some major element of game design and story and redo all cutscene during development I hope...

Well, if the game is bad, then the project has no future. Games are canceled all the time, for all platforms, but they rarely get public attention. Reportedly, Rime was never playable. All trailers were CGI and team that make it had leadership that did questionable things.

MS had its share of high profile failures this gen [Fable Legends, Phantom Dust, that action/spy game from studio that is now making Gears4].

I heard of problem of development and gameplay more than one year ago. Like with The Last Guardian some people were sent to help but it was more difficult the technical problem, the game design was bad and every playtest the people find the game boring...
