Xbox Live Indie Games... definitive thread

Not sure if you guys are still keeping up with Indie Games, but you should definitely try these out...

The first one is a old school NES-type RPG. It's getting great reviews.

The last one is a modernized version of Galaga. Wife loves it!

Both are 80 MSP or $1!! Excellent games & an excellent price!

I'm afraid NXE has actually caused the opposite effect of the design intention. I now purchase fewer XBLA and Indie Games due to the organizational method chosen.

Not sure who is still keeping up with the XBLIG games, but when the new dashboard udpate went into effect in early November MS moved the XBLIG section under Specialty Shops between Avatar Marketplace & Game Room. The developers went into an uproar because now their titles were not in the same Games category as XBLA and GoD. MS corrected that mis-step a few weeks later after sales figures showed a major drop off. But a few premier XBLIG developers had already decided to rebel against MS by ganging up together to launch their own promotion called Indie Games Winter Uprising. The promotion sought to combat the abysmal sales & tarnished image by showcasing new & superior games in a 1 week promotion. Below is a list of those titles & the trailer showcasing said games...

  • Alpha Squad by Dragon Divide - Coming Soon
  • Aphelion Episode 2: Wings of Omega by Lunatic Studios - Coming Soon
  • Asteroids Do Concern Me by Evil Robot Logic - Available Now
  • Break Limit by Zombie Monkey Games - Available Now

  • Crossfire 2 by Radiangames - Coming Soon

I've download every title launched so far and it's amazing at how great they are. Especially considering quite a few are $1! So far my favorite is Decimation X3. Loved the original and this one is much better. Of the rest I've been hearing glowing reviews for Epic Dungeon & Soulcaster 2. I'm sure the RPG fan will love those & especially Cthulhu Saves the World from the developer that released the excellent Breath of Death VII: The Beginning. The action fan should keep an eye out for ZP2KX made by James Silva who did The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai.

BTW, Xona Games also released a new title a couple days after Decimation X3 called Score Rush that wasn't part of the promotion. It's as good, if not better than X3. It's kinda a prequel of sorts for their upcoming XBLA title Duality ZF(it's using the same engine). Anyway, if you haven't been to the XBLIG channel in awhile I highly recommend it!

I just checked out a video of the games AzBat listed and wow they are impressive looking. It's amazing how far these games have come since the service first launched. I think this weekend I'm going to go on a shopping spree in the Indie games section :D

I haven't read this whole thread, or checked every game on the service, but is there any games that are kind of like diablo?

Not too bad huh? ;) I'm more impressed every day. I would check out the just released Indie Uprising titles Epic Dungeon & Soulcaster 2. Plus, I would check out Soulcaster 1 and Dungeon Adventure.

For the best games what I would do is start with the Top Rated channels in the Marketplace then go to the individual genres. Anything with 3.5 or more stars should be considered. Top Downloaded should be last since they may not showcase the best quality games, but it can give you an idea of which ones are downloaded more.

Thanks, I'll be sure to check those out!

I always had an idea for a game and keep fooling myself into thinking that one day I'll be able to make it with a few friends and throw it up on the marketplace. However the quality of some of these games match or exceeds some of the crap on XBLA, and I can't compete with that.

A man can dream I guess :p

I've been playing Cthulhu Saves The World and I'm loving it! I read that if they sold enough downloads before the Jan 1st cut off, they could afford to be full time developers. I really hope it's true and they sold enough, I'm now officially a fan of their games.

I really need to get back to work on Ted Zombie - by the time I am done zombies will be out of style already. At least my twist was Ted was the last zombie on earth, and he has to save the humans from invading aliens in a 2D side scroller. Engine was based on a book, something similar to what Dean did with Dust (he gave me lots of pointers because we both started with the same book). Artwork is my crutch, I can upload the alpha art but it might cause you to never speak with me again.

Mechanics were either twin stick, even for melee or switch to a traditional button masher with combos. Fun stuff, have had lots of fun working on the engine. I could pretty easily switch to Unity and accomplish what I want, so when I have more time I will actively look into that.
