Windows 10 [2014 - 2017]

I stopped using Bitdefender when it caused a problem with some game. Can't remember which. And I ran into some nasty problems with Avast at work. I'm just using MS Defender these days.

AFAIK you won't get a Windows 10 key unless you run an upgrade first. The fresh install from USB/ISO asks for a key. The whole process seems geared around the assumption that everyone is going to do an upgrade install.
I'm on win 10 now, I didn't supply a key (I suppose I can do it later). And No I did not upgrade.
heres what I did, because theres some misadvice on this thread *ahem* scottarm *cough* ;)
1. download win 10 onto your usb stick
2. boot from the USB stick, install win 10, (after about an hour) then it comes to a place where is saiz reboot in 10 seconds
3. ok so it reboots and then it tries to install itself again from the USB stick!!!! FFS, thus reboot again go into bios, change it to boot of the harddisk
4. after a few reboots(you would think MS after all these years would solve this issue) etc it should work

looks good so far, sound etc aint working, but I should be able to fix that

BTW this new beowser (edge I think its called is terrible, buggy as buggery, cant even select a tab, so limited to one open tab, font kerning is broken etc

I wouldn't do what zed did. Either do the download update or create an installation media to upgrade your PC. After the upgrade, do a clean install if you'd like, but I'd update first. Not sure how you'll get a windows 10 key if you wipe out your windows7/8 before doing the upgrade offer.

Curious, Edge is working fine here

mate, I wouldnt recommend anyone to wipe out a previous installation anyways cause you'll never know if everything will go right, eg now with win 10 I have no sound (yamaha ur44 = no drivers yet) & I just started up win 10 again (and only one monitor was working, both worked the last time I started it up after I installed the nvidia drivers) Hopefully these issues are solved when I come back from holiday, because I've literally been waiting for months to start making music properly, did complete something a couple of days ago (though need to remix) http://zedzeek.com/music/yakko.mp3
also I was reading today steinberg say today dont upgrade to win10 http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=226&t=83295
note : I did notice not also the windows 10 apps are high DPI ready, I havent checked many out yet but did notice a couple of the MS system tools arent

@Grall, yes edge now seems to be working & looking much better
also after another reboot but monitors are now working

I think MS just doesn't want me to upgrade yet.
Everything I try it won't let me short of trying full install which I don't want to do.

People without any sound, disabling all audio enhancements fixed it for me:

- right-click the speaker in the taskbar and select Playback devices
- select the device and click Properties
- go to the Enhancements tab and check "Disable all enhancements"

Some apps were very slow/stuttery (solitaire) or simply crashed (crossy road) until the sound was fixed.
Edit: same with the Edge browser (crashed with streaming videos if there was no sound).

Found this quote about windows 10 is it true
" 8 and 16 bit color depth is no longer supported and exclusive fullscreen is no longer allowed for older DX applications"

Well if you just go to their Media Creation Tool it does offer to create either a USB stick or an ISO.
Yes, I know, but you still shouldn't need to fetch a separate utility ("app" in today's fecking parlance.)

I haven't even tried the main upgrade route that supposedly pops up with Windows Update or something... I haven't figured out how to get that to appear!
AFAIK if you go the standard route, microsoft opts you in randomly amongst the millions of people standing in line to upgrade. So it might take a while until you get "activated" and ready to go. *shrug* I for one sure couldn't stand waiting, lol. :)

I have some thoughts on the Edge browser from a tablet perspective....
Some things I noticed myself from a desktop user's perspective is it doesn't share bookmarks with internet explorer. You have to IMPORT your own fecking bookmarks! And now if/when I change anything, I will end up with mismatches. Blahg! Also, I don't know if Apple iCloud for Windows supports Edge yet, as I use iCloud to synchronize all my bookmarks across my various devices.

Second thing is, you can't adjust Edge's window vertically from the top edge unless you point all the way off to the right edge of the window... *boggle* This is so very very weird! If you do that, the mouse pointer changes into the window-sizing version and you can even move the pointer left along the edge, until you start nearing the tab and button areas at the left side, then it will revert to a standard mouse pointer again.

Third, Edge (and maybe other windows as well, I'm not sure) can't be snapped to top and bottom edge of the desktop by sizing the window vertically towards the top edge of the screen... Instead it maximizes the entire window, like if you'd double-clicked the title bar. Maybe this behavior is deliberate, but it's not how it worked in Win7/8.x and also seems vaguely counter-intuitive, so I'm gonna bitch about it, lol. ;)

Also, desktop background slide show function doesn't seem to work at all, or else it can't show images from more than one single specific folder, which would be wacked-up.

Hold / right click on highlighted text and there is no longer "Search the web". Oh dear.
Yes, this is a somewhat annoying first-world problem which they should get around to re-adding soon-ish. I agree. :)

True. It renders MMO-Champion's bloated site noticeably quicker than IE did. Heck, my iPad was faster than IE (which is powered by my 4GHz haswell CPU... *facepalm*)

@pharma wineows hacking forum also filled with post about diaabling the internal keylogger
The built-in WHAT?!

according to a quick read on the hacking forum, Microsoft do the usual 'collect data anonymous to improve service " but this time more aggressive with key logging @Grall

Soo, it seems that all those who upgraded to Win 10 Pro are sharing the same product key. Activation is done based on HWID instead. Will be interesting to see how MS handles when people start switching components

The "keylogger" has been there since insider builds and there has always been option to turn it off right in windows, can't remember out of my head where though

@orangpelupa Are you sure?

I can't imagine that being legal, even with EULA fine print. Nor can I really see any legitimate purpose in doing so, which makes me question if this is really what MS is doing. :) I'm thinking, maybe some hacker wannabe either misinterpreted something or is deliberately spreading misinformation to make waves for himself...

Hmmm... Edge sure has a propensity for seemingly re-adjusting the size and/or position of text and possibly other elements too on this forum. I'm not entirely sure what the hell is going on, but suddenly I see something re-adjusting itself without me doing anything (other than typing.) Feels weird.

Seems I needed to install a new driver for my X-Fi to get it working. The official Windows 10 driver isn't due out from Creative until October but there's a test version available.

@Grall it seems only in the insider mode.

BTW for privacy concern, people need to manually deactivate the sync options (WiFi name and password, cortana spy stuff, advert tracking, etc). Its opt in by default

@Malo and im using modded realtek driver. I wonder will it still works?

Or this time windoes standard driver can work properly......

Yeah I saw in the privacy settings there are new options compared to Win8. Not hard to find.

And yes Cortana is disabled by default. I haven't really looked at that because I don't know how it would be of value to me. It sounds like it's for people who can't handle doing a web search and/or want to hear Jen Taylor / Cate Archer and because MS just needed to copy Siri and Google Now to remain hip. Actually Win10 does feel more like Android now with the bottom nav bar too....
