Windows 10 [2014 - 2017]

Some updated impressions:

I"m not impressed so far. My desktop videos have stopped working,

This is still a problem, it seems Dreamscene doesn't have a fix for W10 yet but I assume one is coming. I was able to find a YT video out there that claimed to fix it but it was crazy complex, I'll wait for something a bit more mainstream.

my 360 wireless dongle the same,

Managed to fix this with a pita manual driver install. Although as I recall I had to do the same with W7 so this isn't a W10 issue, more a general Microsoft issue!

I strongly dislike having to log in with my windows account (although I hear that can be changed),

This one was easy to fix.

the new start menu sucks compared to the old one (at least on initial impression),

I'm still not a fan but I've at least managed to make it a bit more useable. It's going to take a while I think before I've gotten this anywhere near as useable as my W7 menu. Oh yeah, and I really dislike the removal of the games explorer pop out menu. Yes it was crap but it was better than nothing which appears to be the W10 alternative.

the xbox app is utter shite - literally the vista games explorer was better!

Strangely, the first time I opened the app I was unable to see any games on my PC other than the old Games for Windows games and my ancient XB360 games which I don't even own anymore. There was no option to add my own games. Now that option is available so it's a lot better - but it's still crap. The way games are listed in one big long list rather than having a tile option is crap, as is the icons that get allocated to games. It's games explorer all over again, but worse. I so intend to try and make it work though.

But worst of all I can't shut the bloody PC down!! Whether I choose shutdown or sleep the damn thing just reboots itself! I had give it a hard shutdown via the physical power button this evening.

Eventually managed to fix this one. It was a really obscure conflict with a Gigabyte utility I had installed (and have no idea what it did).

Hopefully I'll be able to resolve most of these things in time but this is not a good start. If it wasn't for DX12 I'd be soorly tempted to roll back to W7 already. If may grow on me after a few days playing around with it though, assuming I can fix the show stoppers above of course.

So with the show stoppers fixed and the customization making progress I'm no longer considering a roll back to W7. It's light years better than W8 but I'm still not as happy with it as I was with W7. I really dislike the whole app focus considering that in general, apps are does shitty cut down versions of the same full applications or web pages I can make better use of on a desktop. But at least I can pretty much ignore them in W10 unlike W8.

Right-click your desktop, select "Customize" or whatever it is in other languages that lets you set desktop image background and so on. In the list on the left in the window that appears, select "Colors" (for whatever reason). In the center area of the window, tick the switch that says to make taskbar and start menu transparent, if it isn't ticked already.

If it IS ticked (and you're still not getting transparent effects), then I don't know what's going on... :)

And yeah, to have Dreamscene back would be cool. I haven't used it since WinVista though; didn't even know you could get it to work in Win7...

Thanks, it seems I just had to turn it off and back on again (it was already on by default). It works fine now, just a shame about the ugly non-transparent window borders :(

I have a missing driver for SMBus Controller in the device manager... Odd that there isn't a driver in the latest OS included for a chipset that is more than two years old by now.

Not sure it's actually needed though - computer still seems to work just fine. *shrug*

For decades, one of the anchor points in the Apple vs. Microsoft debate was that Microsoft gave you more control over your OS than Apple did, even if it layered that control in obtuse menus and difficult-to-parse options. With Windows 10, the balance of power has clearly shifted. The company that brought us the “Scroogled” campaign now hoovers up your data in ways that would make Google jealous. It selects defaults that allow it to use your bandwidth to distribute its own software without any exposed option for how and when that sharing takes place.

My problem with these elements of Windows 10 boils down to this: It feels, once again, as if Microsoft has taken the seed of a good idea, like providing users with security updates automatically, and shoved the throttle to maximum. This new information opacity is present at so many levels, it feels more like a deliberate design decision than an accidental omission. Want to know what specific KB updates do? You’ll have to look them up manually. Want some information on how Windows Defender works in Windows 10? You won’t find much on Microsoft’s official pages for the operating system. Taken as a whole, it’s harder to configure many of these settings in the way you might want them, information is harder to come by, and Microsoft is sucking down more user data than ever.

Well its been years & since XP times that Microsoft actually provided details of what a particular update did & even some known examples where they intentionally lied about the nature of an update that fixed a severe vulnerability/enabled 'legit' checks etc.
Like existing updates they have links to KB articles that don't tell you anything useful about what is being done.

Still not letting me upgrade.

Actually individual updates in Win 7 have an information link to get what the update actually does in general terms, and I used this feature to deselect/hide any updates related to upgrading to Win 10. The last thing I need is a nag message about upgrading ....

Update to the day one update, lots got fixed. Now still fiddling with audio driver and mute cortana.

It was not mute on preview. But mute on final

Now I'm contemplating whether to upgrade right away or not. I initially thought it just a better version of Windows, turns out that MS change a couple of things for the worse (forced driver update from WU?). I currently run mixed driver (as in not from 1 package) for my GPU, which the audio driver for HDMI is using older driver because using the new one, I can't duplicate the audio from stereo output to HDMI (basically copying audio stream from stereo to the HDMI audio out so audio can be heard from both at the same time). Not that I used it to hear the audio simultaneously, but more for convenient reason as not to always switch audio out when changing whether I want to be in front of my PC or my TV (which the same PC is connected to it).
Anyway, can Windows 10 output the same audio to multiple devices so I don't have to keep changing playback device?

Depending on who you believe, this is already bigger than even the largest of Apple's streaming events.

2nd post to rub it in.
dude they lied to you, sorry to break it to you but the game is changed, you have been conned (is that a word? I thought it had a D somewhere)
win 10 is not even in the same field as an IOS upgrade
latest numbers I see is, is 14 million win 10 upgrades day 1,
if IOS X was tracking at 14 million after the first day they would be as silent as they are about apple watch sales/shipment numbers
grall: (whisper, OMein gott in himmel apfel vatch zales ) ..... psssssst.... zats bad ...... zehry zear baaaaad
do not speak to me of these numbers
(sorry swedish = german) same shit, grall ;)

Probably yeah, but then again, Win10 download is what, six times-ish larger than iOS? And these days Apple is doing even more to reduce the download size of their OS upgrades, so that you can update your phone even if you filled up most of it with fart apps and cat videos...

So compensating for difference in download sizes you end up with 14M Win10 upgrades corresponding to 84M iOS upgrades, which maybe sounds about right?

Phonetically, Swedish and German is extremely different, despite our relative closeness geographically... But, I'll accept your assertion from a pop culture standpoint.

How Windows 10 Ruined Solitaire:

Solitaire is one of the most popular Windows games in existence. However, the Windows 10 version of Solitaire is surprisingly terrible. At first, the Microsoft Solitaire Collection sounds like a slight improvement on the classic card game. It includes five variations of Solitaire along with Daily Challenges to give you a sense of progression while playing. The game also sports leaderboards and touchscreen controls. However, there's a big problem: advertising. While Solitaire Collection is free with Windows 10, you'll be periodically subjected to full-screen video ads :( If you don't want to see these advertisements, Microsoft has a terrible solution to offer you. If you pay $1.50 a month or $10 for a year for Premium membership, you won't have to watch these ads.

Ugh, how about I just delete Solitaire off my drive, and MS gets to shove their full-screen ads up their greedy butts?

It would be a little more acceptable if it was for all ads encountered in Win 10.
Hm, where else is it showing ads? I haven't found anything - yet anyway. Then again, if they have ads in friggin solitaire, grud knows where else they've squirreled them away...

And it's only for Hearts! It would be a little more acceptable if it was for all ads encountered in Win 10.
There are other ads in W10?

My 2 cents, I upgraded from W7 booting from usb media. Everything went smoothly and no major hickups so far.
