Windows 10 [2014 - 2017]

Yeah I tried some other methods and got different keys. Lol. But the above ShowKey util shows you everything. It would really suck to wipe the drive and discover you have the incorrect key. You'd have to install the old OS again, upgrade, get key again... Pain in the ass this Win10 upgrade first key thing is.

It's surprisingly poorly thought-through this whole process for this day and age - you need a separate program to create a bootable USB stick - which the installer should offer to create for you automatically, considering few people have DVD burning software, and also, more and more computers don't even have optical drives at all. You also need a separate, non-microsoft program even just to extract your own product key?! That is really effed up, tbh.

If it doesn't work, delete everything in here: "WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and do the same again
yes their updating process seems wacked going from 8 -> 8.1 I had to do this
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/your-windows-8-1-install-couldnt-be-completed
doesnt matter how many times you click try again, it just craps out, solution is to go linuxstyle and open a command prompt and type stuff in.
Im gonna try win 10 today, I was gonna wait until I got back from a holiday, but bugger it

great error message anyways
Your Windows 8.1 install couldn’t be completed. Something happened, and the install of Windows 8.1 cant’ be completed.
well no shit sherlock

Well if you just go to their Media Creation Tool it does offer to create either a USB stick or an ISO. I haven't even tried the main upgrade route that supposedly pops up with Windows Update or something... I haven't figured out how to get that to appear!

The key situation is a real pain though yeah. And upgrade failures for mysterious reasons, probably to protect "normal people" from scary error messages, will drive one up a wall.

I have some thoughts on the Edge browser from a tablet perspective....

  • They got rid of swipe navigation! WHAT?!
  • Hold / right click on highlighted text and there is no longer "Search the web". Oh dear.
  • Don't see a way to make it truly full screen...
  • Bookmarks menu is nicer than the horizontal squares thing on IE11 Modern.
  • Fast.
Oh look here. I guess others noticed the weird feature removals....

The force download worked fine for me but it's not doing anything else. The 3.6Gb is sitting there but it won't actually decide to upgrade to Windows 10 yet. The little applet just says they're validating and that I upgrade when I get my notification.

Windows 10 is about to hit, Im not sure what to do.

A/ I have 8.1 on a HDD which I'm currently using every day
B/ I have installed 8.1 on a new SSD which I brought a few weeks ago, which I havent used

I will install win 10 on the SSD, now do I have to upgrade win8.1 there or can I just download win10 stick it on a USB stick and do a fresh install on to the SSD? i.e. I can delete the SSD's win 8.1?

ta zed
hmmm, so looking at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 <- this seems to me the common sense way & how I would of done it if I was MS.
I assume I didnt need to upgrade at all, or even install windows 8 or windows 8.1, I can just download the installation info onto a USB stick (which I'm doing at the moment, I still havent clicked on that get windows 10 icon)
Just shows how badly Microsoft has explained how to install windows 10, as not a single user on this site (whom I assume are more computer literate than the average person) has actually understood it.
NOTE: I havent installed it yet, so maybe it is more complicated than it appears but fingers crossed :p

Yeah just use that link. It's what I used to upgrade my home machine last night and my work machine this morning.

No, it's pretty easy to understand if you go to the sites they provide and read the information rather than trying to guess. But the automatic update provided in Windows 7/8 seems to make upgrading very easy for people that don't want to read.

AFAIK you won't get a Windows 10 key unless you run an upgrade first. The fresh install from USB/ISO asks for a key. The whole process seems geared around the assumption that everyone is going to do an upgrade install.

Do you actually get a unique Windows 10 key if you upgrade, or do you just get a generic key and MS then uses a hardware id to authenticate?

I"m not impressed so far. My desktop videos have stopped working, my 360 wireless dongle the same, I strongly dislike having to log in with my windows account (although I hear that can be changed), the new start menu sucks compared to the old one (at least on initial impression), the xbox app is utter shite - literally the vista games explorer was better! But worst of all I can't shut the bloody PC down!! Whether I choose shutdown or sleep the damn thing just reboots itself! I had give it a hard shutdown via the physical power button this evening.

Hopefully I'll be able to resolve most of these things in time but this is not a good start. If it wasn't for DX12 I'd be soorly tempted to roll back to W7 already. If may grow on me after a few days playing around with it though, assuming I can fix the show stoppers above of course.

Microsoft’s updated terms also state that they collect basic information “from you and your devices, including for example “app use data for apps that run on Windows” and “data about the networks you connect to.”

Users who chose to enable Microsoft’s personal assistant software “Cortana” have to live with the following invasion to their privacy: “To enable Cortana to provide personalized experiences and relevant suggestions, Microsoft collects and uses various types of data, such as your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and how often you interact with them on your device. Cortana also learns about you by collecting data about how you use your device and other Microsoft services, such as your music, alarm settings, whether the lock screen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more.” But this is not all, as this piece of software also analyses undefined “speech data”: “we collect your voice input, as well your name and nickname, your recent calendar events and the names of the people in your appointments, and information about your contacts including names and nicknames.”

But Microsoft’s updated privacy policy is not only bad news for privacy. Your free speech rights can also be violated on an ad hoc basis as the company warns:

“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to”, for example, “protect their customers” or “enforce the terms governing
the use of the services”.

The ShowKey program shows 3 keys after the upgrade install.

-Installed Key (I used this for fresh install)
-Original Key, with original edition "Win Next Starter Retail"
-OEM Key, Win 8.1 RTM Core OEM

Need help, posting from tablet.
1. Install win10
2. Run Windows update
3. Reboot.
4. Lose Internet in all 4 browsers
5.get large headache.
What I have tried so far.
Disable firewall.
Go to router config status screen check.
Ping router by IP address check.
Ping Google by name, ping fails but name seems to resolve to an IP address.
Try accessing internet through this tablet, check.

Help me please, or direct me somewhere that can, thank you.

No idea. I didn't have problems after updates....

I think the Edge browser is a POS though. It snags up sometimes and wont respond to taps. IE11 was basically better all around.

Ran the install from the USB and worked fine, all running ok seemingly with initial tests. Even my WHS client is still working and authenticating to my server.

Where did my Media Center go??? (j/k :) )

EDIT: I don't seem to have any sound out of by X-Fi.....

For the hell of it I uninstalled bitdefender and now I can access the internet. Sigh there goes a trouble free install, well I'm off to look for a solution.
