Ubisoft’s Shanghai studio to develop Xbox 360 Splinter Cell

Hasn't ubisoft basically said they are doing away with CG cut-scenes on 360? Everything on the 360 should be realtime, so why would they release a trailer that was 100% CG?

Makes no sense.

Exactly. That's what I'm trying to say too. There looks to be one or two things that seem to love CGish, but most of the video to me looked very doable.

After watching the trailer, looks about 30% CG to me, lots of scenes that look realtime. Like the ones where he being photographed, that's basicalyl the in-game model right there I'm sure.

These must be realtime, anything less would be too small of a step up from the XBOX version of 2004 which already has extremely good character models.

So are they doing away with CGI cutscenes but relased a trailer with 30% prerenered CGI? Doesnt really add up to me.

judging from the trailer, they are not totally doing away with CG cut-scenes, however many of the cut-scenes were realtime.

so looks like it will be a mix between the two, using both realtime and CG cut-scenes.

Most of that looks like CG - but it definitely takes a dip in certain portions - which are probably realtime eg. the train sequence:

These are not realtime, but CGI for sure. They are probably using the assets created for normal map extraction, and the smoothness and detail in the silhouettes makes it 100% sure that it's not ingame. It cannot be so detailed, even FN3 characters aren't so smooth and rely on normal mapping for cloth wrinkles.
But the post effects, camera work, motion blur and other things are also unlikely to be realtime. There's that small scene with the mirror in the jail cell as well, not gonna happen in-engine for a few more years...

It also makes total sense, as UBI has a shared CGI team that created a lot of stuff for the Prince of Persia games as an example. Splinter Cell probably has a story that's complicated enough to make it impossible to show events in engine movies, thus it's probably full of cinematics. Now why they haven't included enough realtime footage as well is beyond me, but it's highly likely that the CGI movies have been completed with the original schedule in mind, so there's a lot of that material to show.

It is also quite obvious now that the leaked parachute screenshots are CGI as well.

The similarities between the ingame and CGI models are obviously a result of heavily re-using ingame assets for the cinematics. UBI probably doesn't want to spend as much money on CG as other studios do, that's why they've consolidated all the work to a single team and aren't hiring specialized studios like Blur to do the job with heavily detailed models created from scratch.

Not being an ass, but how is it that it's SO obvious that the parachute scene was CGI Laa-Yosh?

And I getting f*cking tired of all this CG Bullsh*t too. And this goes for Sony too. Show some damn games people. What the hell is sooooo damn hard to show an actual game? As a matter a fact they don't even have to show the gameplay per sey but at least so something that's realtime.

I swear to everything that's holy in about 6 more weeks if I don't start seeing real next-gen game's screenshots and videos I'm going to boycott next-gen for the year of 2006. This is getting too damn stupid now!

Agreed. I've been completely annoyed by this for a while.

Yeah, console games have been overtiring with dolled up gameplay graphics and straight CGI for generations. I was hoping that this gen they would have the confidence in their graphics to show the real thing but unfortunately that was apparently just wishful thinking.

It's really just the usual stuff; lighting, shading, quality of filtering and AA, with very good camerawork and a cityscape that's not even in the near of the best we've seen yet from nextgen (Ghost Recon).
To be honest, the art doesn't look as good as it could though, but I really don't want to look like I'm bashing the Ubi guys here, they probably don't get as much time as they would like to.

With that said, I think you shouldn't write off nextgen so soon. The word is that Heavenly Sword looks quite a lot better than both the E3 stuff and what's on the Team Ninja website - and that it plays nextgen, too... ;)

And that's from our resident cynic cgi artist....that gets me excited for next gen pretty much more than anything I've heard hear to date.

So the truth will set you free. Damnit I wanted the game to look like those two videos too. I swear, when are we going to get real next-gen games? What does a real next-gen game even look like?

First Killzone gets exposed, now this? My future for videogames is falling by the week it seems. If Sony doesn't have that Feburary festival I think I may start my own GTA.

i don't really take a slide like that as proof of anything. i could type that and edit into a video, easily.

if the trailer is all CG, why the huge discrepancy between the scenes? If it's all CG, then some of it is much much better than the rest, do they have 2 seperate CG teams?? That makes no sense. There's a huge difference between the scenes where he is lying in the snow, and skydiving and the rest of teh trailer.

If the in-game models are not at least as good as those shots I posted, it will not be a very large step up from SC 3: http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2005/086/reviews/920719_20050328_screen007.jpg

New Trailer: http://xboxmovies.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/2840/Tom-Clancys-Splinter-Cell-Double-Agent/

That looks like it has lots of realtime footage to me. For example, the intro screen looks like it shifts from realtime to rendered. He's sitting in the plane, it's the real sam character model, with some facial animations, then he tosses the goggles out the plane and it lands in water that clearly looks CG.

This is probably what Ubi meant when they said they are "blurring the line between realtime and CG cut-scenes"
