Star Wars: Force Unleashed

No, 'fraid not. I didn't post the movie when I saw it (before 101998 posted this) as i didn't feel there was anything new. The vid was about the genesis of the game. ...

ah thanks shifty... i had the sound down as I had someone in my office while watching. ;)

I have both systems, this was reported on a PS3 site... So its only coming out on Xbox? Is that the fuss? Im confused.

Read the link in the original post. It is a multi-platform title. There's no fuss. Your confusion is without merit.

This game is going to OWN. I feel like I've been waiting for this game since I played the original Dark Forces game soooooo long ago.

So, is the gameplay displayed if that video reminiscent of Midway Chicago's Psi-ops to anyone else?

I like the interaction with some of the enviroments, with that said, I'm not sold on the game itself. For information, Psi-Ops was really good until the ghosts/invisible bombs nonsense part of the game, it was a grind halt to any fun a player could have in Psi-Ops.

Agreed. Though if they can nail the "game" part of this awesome tech demonstration, The Force Unleashed will be a sight to behold. Really looking forward to seeing how this thing comes together.

Best next-gen engine out there! They've actually gone forwards with the technologies not possible last gen. It's not just more rigid bodies, but the animation and materials that last gen just couldn't pull off. The end result looks brilliant, creating an incredibly physical world.

The game itself I doubt. A super powerful Jedi post Vader is just squeezing more history into the SW already overburdened universe. SW has just become quite tired for me now. Dunno how others feel. And you're stuck with the one approach, which is all attitude. Some folk would rather play a different Jedi flavour. They really ought to have come up with something more customizable, or at least with character options. I'd be more inclined to consider the game with a meditative Qui-Gon Gin type character than a bad-attitude Maul wannabe. And why's the character always shown beating up Storm Troopers. Seems his loyalties are confused!

I agree that Star Wars has gone too much for the over the top feel. The original trilogy definitely had a different feel than the later trilogy and all of the more recent games.

I still think this game looks pretty good.

My biggest worry here is the gameplay in itself, not in terms of control dynamics but gameflow & purpose..

It's looking more & more like a cookie-cutter linear, mission-based affair & with only force crystals & gaining points to upgrade your force powers (those same force powers we've seen done so many times before.. unleash something why don't u..?) i'm not sure if it will have the depth of gameplay to really make it a stand out for me..

I have no doubt it's gonna sell like crazy on it's license & story alone though..

I just wish more info was revealed on exactly how they intend to evolve the gameflow (if at all) in the same way they did the battle mechanics..

Christ. They need to take this engine and make another JK game out of it.

I'm hopeful that is the next JK game (since I play them in 3rd person most of the time).
Give me bullet time, and some leveling up I'm good to go.

I glanced through GI article (the issue with R2 cover), and selective leveling up is there.
Too bad this game doesn't get any hype at all, being multiplatform and all.
The article mentions summer release.

I'm sure this game will get hype from now on.

The story sounds like it could be a reversal of Anakin? Starts out bad, turns good, something like that. It would make at least some sense.

All in all, I share everyone's worries in that the gameplay is going to be hard. They've worked really hard in getting the three engines working together, and that's great. They probably worked closely with the Indiana Jones team, who are using the exact same three middle-wares if I remember correctly. So they're hedging their bets, so to speak.

Right now the force seems greatly overpowered. Hopefully they get some kind of system in place that makes sure there is buildup, and that makes sure that you don't have unlimited force energy.

But it's certainly an appealing glimpse of the future. I've worried about middle-ware before, but stuff like Havok has convinced me that it can work in games really well, and with good use of the multi-core environment in modern consoles and pcs they can work very well indeed.

For now, I think the Indiana Jones game will appeal to me more. The big question is will they pace the two releases? If this is released in the summer, then we probably won't see Indiana Jones until winter at the very earliest?

Didn't they develop two of the three systems in house, Havok being the only 3rd party system?

That at least gives me some confidence that it should all mesh together very well.

LA didn't develop any of them..
Euphoria - Natural Motion
DMM - Pixelux
Havok - Intel
Have Intel actually developed any of Havok, or just bought the company that did recently to add to their repertoire and haven't contributed anything themselves (that is, nothing has changed since the acquisition and the Havok being used was developed totally independently of Intel so Intel shouldn't be attributed the product yet)?

I also think these companies should get together to create an integrated system super-deluxe middleware. The combination, at least on paper, seems an ideal next-gen engine incorporating all the facets of future gaming (and physics) technologies. I suppose there is a conflict of interests with Euphoria and Havok's behavioural physics though. From the sounds of it, DMM is locked into LucasArts which sounds a travesty.

Yeah it looks over the top alright. I mean, you could do most of this kind of thing on a smaller scale in Jedi Knight, JK2, and JA years and years ago. What I miss from older SW games is the original triology atmosphere and perhaps the firearms actually. I don't really get a prolonged kick out of throwing guys around and watching ragdoll effects. It's almost like the overuse of CGI in some movies (like the prequels! lol)

They sure don't hype their actual story much. This game is all about eye candy. The "next gen" keyword is thrown around like a bad habit and they just show you shots of crazy physics effects.

About all I want from LA anymore is a SW fighter sim. Even prequel-based would be fine. Just take it seriously and try to make me feel like part of a "real" world. No Rogue Squadron or Starfighter trash.
