Sony's NeoGeo Pocket's (PSP2/Vita) business/non technical ramifications talk

ya, Sony should give these guys the sdk for PS suit, I mean if they are gona write homebrew anyway, why not do it and take small profit from it. I love android because of the BSplayer, play HD mkv and rmvb no problem stream from my PC. If Vita get something like this + a decent browser that is at least on part with the one on iOS, I pretty much don't need a tablet. 250 bucks is a steal.

What do you think the patents would cost?

I think users will have to pay for the royalties. I don't know how much they will cost (They are capped at some high number). ^_^

Sony reports next week and I definitely expect some analysts to ask about Vita's Japan performance. Looking at the Media Create Top 50 for last week shows only one Vita title. That is definitely underperforming so it will be interesting to hear Sony's comments. At this rate I think the EU will be by far their strongest territory while the US and Japan territories remain tepid.

Do those meet transcoded videos totally conform to whichever video encoding standard they are meant to be in?

I tried some presets in Handbrake. Generally the smaller 720p files worked better than the bigger 1080p ones.

Also tried Zumocast, which lets you stream or transcode and save on the iPad. Took a long time. ONe 1080p rip was like a slideshow. A very slow one at that.

Too early to tell. 3DS and PSP started slow too, until the right software came along. Good for analysts to ask more questions, since it would give Sony a public opportunity to explain their rationale. I suspect they may defer some answers to the Destination Playstation meeting.

Destination Playstation is on 6th Feb I think. We should get more PS news in that meeting/event.

EDIT: While the price drop helped 3DS tremendously, it also killed DS causing Nintendo to lower its DS forecast. Vita's pricing leaves PSP going strong in Japan. They will probably want to milk it worldwide. Not sure how long they want to play this game in advanced markets though.

Apple will have to improve the playback over time. Did the iPad play 720p at launch ? I am under the impression that they added 720p playback later, but I could be wrong here.

The Vita plays 720p at launch but will need further work for 1080p too. Sony has not committed to any timeline. I suspect battery perception at launch is one factor. Other higher priority work such as better multitasking support may be more critical too.

For those who pre-ordered the 3G bundle, you'll essentially get a free first month usage...

I didnt know you have to pay for patent liscence for video streaming? Who owns the patent? Cant sony add that into their current player? I tried playing some 720p mkv files with ipad1 with oplayer streaming from my pc, it play like a slide show. I remember reading a Q&A on Vita, I think sony said it can handle any 720p mp4 easily, but not sure on 1080p. I assume it can since the tegra 3 is powerful enough for that and the quad core powerVR in Vita is suppose to be better. Think all the media playback might be handle by the media engine 2 though.

What exactly are your questions? Yes, there are shitloads of patents regarding video decoding and streaming owned by lots of organisations.

how does those movie player apps, on ios and andriod handle it in the first place? Just pay royalty to whoever that owns the patent? What I was thinking is cant this be done the same through PS suite, since its basically Sony own app store.

The hardware and software vendors all pay for their use according to how they make money using the codecs (e.g., in a chip, in software, or in a service). The structure is tiered but capped at say 1 million units.

Here's an example:

Yes, the hardware vendor, or the OS vendor, or a middleware like PS Suite can pay for their partners or customers (should they choose to).

ya, Sony showed DLNA support, so I guess have to use some kind of transcoder like tversity again like for PS3. BSplayer lite is free on android though, not sure how much more for a full version or if there is one but the free one does all the job already... Sony was thinking about in game ads a few years ago, maybe they might allow PS suite apps to do the same?

DLNA doesn't support local file playback.

BSPlayer claim that their install base is 70 million. It should have passed the cap I mentioned. Perhaps they only pay a fixed, lump sum every year.

Sony, get them to do a BSPlayer for Vita.

I thought DLNA can scan network drive but only play back the supported format, but with Tversity it can transcode any format to the format you want. Maybe Sony should get XBMC ppl to port that over.

Can it transcode any video? There are a few videos that my PS3 did not play through TVersity and I dont know how to make them work
