Sony's NeoGeo Pocket's (PSP2/Vita) business/non technical ramifications talk

I thought DLNA can scan network drive but only play back the supported format, but with Tversity it can transcode any format to the format you want. Maybe Sony should get XBMC ppl to port that over.

Yes it can. I meant not if your Vita is outside the home network.

Can it transcode any video? There are a few videos that my PS3 did not play through TVersity and I dont know how to make them work

If the open source media converter under Tversity is up to date, it should be able to handle most if not all popular formats. Failures may be due to profile mismatch, DRM, bugs in software or the movies in question.

First edition folks get it 1 week earlier plus Little Deviant and a limited edition carrying case. Would be nice if they switch the men card to 8 Gig !

I see some people switching to the new bundle. Amazon seems to receive quite a few preorders.

Edit: New bundle is $50 cheaper. I should switch too if I remember on Monday.

Yeah, Vita seems to quite continuously track in the top #5 (#4 last I checked). Though that said this is probably a quiet time, so that doesn't have to mean much.

You must only be looking at hourly the WiFi is ranked 74 on amazon.com and the 3G is not in the top 100.

How do I check that?

Does it really matter ?

It's ranked #5 in video games now ( says 2 days in top 100 )

Stock may be limited anyway. Sooner or later it has to go down.

Why in the hell would you link me to the same thing that I said Arwin was probably looking at as a refutation to my statement...its like in the face of data you persist in ignoring it positing your own pie in the sky version of items. Just like the ridiculous correlations you try and draw about 3DS and Vita with respect to how they sold and are selling with respect to how their games sold and are selling. So to answer your question about does it matter. Sony is three weeks away from launching their new handheld and it is not in the top 10, 20, 50 for the month based on pre-orders so let me put this in perspective for you both versions of Rocksmith are currently ordered more on amazon.com the 360 wireless adapter is currently ordered more on amazon.com.

The excuse you use for its underperforming numbers in Japan is that it is a great lineup but primarily a "Western" lineup, I don't necessarily disagree with that, the Vita has the largest number of games that I have ever thought about purchasing in a launch window (I consider three months a launch window), but if such is the case one would expect better pre-order performance. Amazon is no GameStop when it comes to moving games but I don't recall GME mentioning strong interest at their last earnings report but maybe we will hear something in March.

My personal thoughts about this handheld generation is that the highest selling platform won't even reach the numbers of the this generations lowest selling platform.

EDIT: Just so I'm clear the thread is listed as the BUSINESS/non technical RAMIFICATIONS talk...

Speaking of ramifications, if the 3DS and Vita "fail" -- in the sense that they don't sell in bigger numbers than previous generations of handhelds but still carve out a big niche of tens of millions each in installed base over several years -- could that failure redound to the console business as well?

Certainly Sony and Nintendo's overall business would be affected. Supposedly MS was entertaining the idea of going into dedicated handhelds but may be prioritizing smart phones and tablets now.

But as more people realize they don't need a dedicated portable device, could they also realize they don't need a console because they derive enough entertainment from phones and tablets, which currently have all the HW and SW development energy?

Huh ? There is no link in Arwin's post here. I simply include it to make sure you're looking at the same page. The ranking is of course updated periodically, but according to that page, it's in Top 100 for 3 days now. Your post claimed that the Vita pack is not in Top 100 at all:

... so you're looking at 2 different pages. ^_^ (The new 3G bundle is only 3 days old, and has limited quantity)

Media Create shows weekly sales chart all the time. ^_^
The sales numbers are of course used to measure *BOTH* lifetime trend and weekly market share. It's standard industry (any industry) practice. I also noted that Vita games are sold via PSN and retail but Media Create only include retail numbers. I did not draw any conclusion about 3DS vs Vita sales, simply noting that Vita's first week is doing well. I did point out that it's too early to draw any conclusion though.

^_^ At this point, I ignored the rest of your post. You clearly have me mixed up with someone else. Dude, chill out. I never said anything about Vita's lineup being western at all. All I want is Gravity Rush, SoundShapes and now also Gust's new game.

[Double posted again. Hmm... the forum may have a double posting bug when a submission crosses the minute]

While we are at it...

Dual stick gaming:

Gyro gaming:

Touch gaming:

IMHO, a responsive touch interface can serve core gamers too. It's more expressive than dual sticks in some situations (e.g., Heavy Rain).

If the vendors play their cards well, they may be able to grow their base since more people play games now. I see people playing games in the public all the time. I also see many of my non-gamer friends starting to play games too.

Playstation Suite is one of the possible moves to tap on the tide of new gamers on other platforms. Nintendo's low price point and content focused strategies may be able to draw in these gamers too.

...

But as more people realize they don't need a dedicated portable device, could they also realize they don't need a console because they derive enough entertainment from phones and tablets, which currently have all the HW and SW development energy?

The dedicated consoles can evolve to take on more functions. Since they are not portable and always sitting in the same corner, there may be other roles for them compared to general portable devices. They can use more powerful processors to differentiate their content also.

From a consumer's point of view, I'd want interoperability between iOS/Android and these consoles, as opposed to the former completely replace the latter.

Wow at those commercials. They should make them real, and use them to replace welcome park. There are some brilliant things in that.

Hmm... Does the "About" box say anything ? May need to use command line. Look for ffmpeg and try the "-v" or "-?" switch.

Off to kid's soccer practice. Will check later.

Hmm couldnt find an "About" box last time I checked. I have no idea where do I look for ffmpeg and what these switches are

That very good! Based on comments this is probably the most well rounded gaming portable device ever created in terms of controls and gaming options.

It would be very sad if it doesnt get the success it deserves and Sony doesnt exploit fully its brilliant potential, especially when Wiiu is around the corner and shows what can be done with the Vita since what applies on Nintendo's screen controller can apply there as well.

Gravity Daze Gets High Marks in Famitsu
http://andriasang.com/comztk/gravity_daze_score/

PlayStation Vita may have its best game yet coming out in a week, if Famitsu's review crew is to be trusted. The magazine's four reviewers gave Gravity Daze (known outside of Japan as Gravity Rush) scores of 10, 9, 9 and 10, or a total of 38.

...

It's the highest scoring Vita game yet.

Can't wait to get my hands on the new toy ! ^_^
I heard the web browser is still not up to par yet (Too slow, perhaps due to limited memory). Come on, Sony. You can do it ~~

Verizon shared data plans show up in employee training materials, still on track?
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/30/verizon-shared-data-plans-show-up-in-employee-training-materials/

Verizon said it was working on a shared data solution for 2012, and according to an anonymous tipster, the new packages could be rolling out soon. We've been told that training material for an update to the outfit's internal account management application includes screenshots (one of which you can see above) that show a new section labeled "account level data plans." The new section apparently shows an account level charge for data allowance and a 9.99 charge per line.

...

Quick, Verizon, show AT&T how it's done ! ^_^
