Sony's NeoGeo Pocket's (PSP2/Vita) business/non technical ramifications talk

I think he meant the input and output limitations, specifically the camera and display resolution.

Yes, yes, Vita can play 720p video and perhaps 1080p video later.
Cue HDMI out adaptor for Vita.

Wow those data plans you have over there are just absolutely terrible! 20$ for 300MB 50$ for 5GB...

That's just a horrible example where they charge you a lot for basically nothing.
I pay 4.99€ for unlimited, granted it's only low speed 512Kbit plan, but it get's the job done and I sometimes tether it to my Ipad and it works well too. A much faster unlimited connection would cost me 13.9€, but I get by with the slower just fine.

There is no HDMI out adapter.

Can it really play 1080p video? As phones become more capable, they get better processing power every year, so they would probably handled higher bit rates better.

PSP didn't have video out either initially. Patsu is anticipating on the inevitable. ;)

It seems likely that it could support 1080p if Sony deems it important enough, but we'll see.

I tried playing some transcoded 1080p rips on iPad1 and it didn't work.

Maybe iPad2 is better.

Also, going back to the screen, why wouldn't people prefer to play 720p video on a 720p screen more than 960x540 screen?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-01-20-is-the-playstation-vita-worth-230

UBM's VP of business intelligence, Jeffrey Brown, tells us that the total bill of materials for the 3G-enabled version of the system comes in at an estimated $159.10 - that's around £102.90. That figure breaks down as follows:

 • Display and touchscreens: $50
 • Battery: $3.60
 • Cameras: $3.50
 • Wi-Fi/BT/GPS: $3.50
 • NAND: $6.00
 • SDRAM: $9.25
 • Processor: $16.00
 • BB+XCR: $16.25
 • Non-electronic: $11.00
 • Other: $30.00
 • Supporting materials: $10.00

Hmm..

In general, US consumer mobile service is very "backwards" compared to the rest of the world. Hope they get to their shared dataplan soon !

EDIT: Look at NavNucST3's bill. Poor NavNuc ! Convince your company to pay for your phone bill. ^_^

If a £20 linux box can play 40 Mbps 1080p h.264, I don't see why a £200 handheld shouldn't. ;)

Where Vita is concerned, I think the more interesting questions are H.265 in the technical direction, and homebrew media apps (PS Suite and PSP hacks) in the application space.

Where home media use is concerned, I think it is more fun for Sony to figure out how to make their secure memory card work for me, in addition to Sony and developers. I have personal media to keep, and I don't want to save them on the home servers or work machines or USB thumbdrive where my kid and his friends can see with open tools, and ask questions. Yes, Daddy has secrets to hide (Nothing racy, just some personal stuff I keep to/for myself for old time sake :devilish:).

Video playback is implementation dependent ! iPad1 chokes on a few things now. Some of the heavy weight textbooks announced yesterday play a little slowly on it.

Also, going back to the screen, why wouldn't people prefer to play 720p video on a 720p screen more than 960x540 screen?

They can, but for a small screen and high DPI, it may not make a whole lot of difference. Probably glare and scratched screens are bigger concerns.

http://www.electronista.com/articles/11/12/16/ps.vita.manual.arrives.ahead.of.launch/

Just as the PlayStation Vita is launching in Japan, Sony has posted the gaming system's manual in English. The guide includes a handful of new revelations, including that it has to get standard-definition video from the PlayStation Store. It can't immediately play 1080p, hinting at an update, nor can it take HD video transferred from the PS3; 720p is the most that can play in normal use.

... add retailer margin, logistic costs, R&D recovery, royalties, packaging, etc.

It also makes me wonder about how they looked at the cpu and gpu costs. Is that really only $16? That would quite surprise me. I have a feeling they didn't factor in any of the gpu.

That article had a mistake:

The (minimum) fee has not changed for Vita yet. It's the same plan as AT&T's tablet customers.

What's more interesting may be an earlier talk:

AT&T CONFIRMS SHARED PLANS FOR SMARTPHONES, TABLETS
http://www.billingworld.com/news/2011/06/at-t-confirms-shared-data-plans-for-smartphones-t.aspx

Actual US Plans:

Service Plan
The AT&T Data Connect plans are month by month and not contract based. All plans include complimentary AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot access in the United States. There are two plan choices:

250MB for $14.99, 30-day recurring opt out, which starts at the date and time of purchase.
3GB for $30.00, 30-day recurring opt out, which starts at the date and time of purchase.

I think I'm going to do one of those GameStop trade in your old iPhone options since I have more than one lying around, to use towards a Vita.

I'm definitely taking a wait and see approach. I guess you could chalk myself up as one of those that got a tablet device and is now less inclined to buy a Vita/3DS. The games so far is enough to keep me from getting bored when traveling and I have the added benefit of a better browser and Ebook reader.

In my case it's a rooted Nook Color, but I think if it wasn't for the tablet, I'd be strongly interested in the Vita. I also suspect that there will be price drop within 6 - 9 months of the US launch ala 3DS.

One of the reasons I'm going for Vita right away, is that I am excited by the fact that games have all these different control methods available to them day one. It's standard for all Vita machines to have dual analog, d-pad, buttons, front touch, back touch, gyro, front and back camera, as well as support for all manner of online / score sharing services. So there's good potential this time for the Vita games to excel beyond their PS3 counterparts (there's not as much genre invention as people think there is ;) ).

This is a big step forwards beyond the PSP, which only basically amazed for being portable, being a great screen, but otherwise was a 'lesser' console in every way (the one analog nub wasn't that great in itself, it had just two - better - shoulder buttons, and that was it - compare to PS3 which had dual analog sticks, four shoulder buttons and sixaxis).

And there is already enough software at launch to make the device worth my while anyway for the first few years, which helps a lot too. I've good faith that things will keep coming beyond that, but even if they didn't the games announced (and seen playable or already out in Japan) now are pretty amazing.

Not that I have that much money to spend, mind, not at all, so I'll definitely not be buying all the games I'm interested in day one.

I can definitely see though that the Vita is up against tablets. Therefore I think the Vita would do well to get the basics of tablet functionality right in its first year (improved browser, youtube, launch of PSSuite as a public platform). If it can do that, I can see it go quite far. The Flicker app is promising, but it will need to cover all the big ones and trending ones, and only PSSuite can make that happen (or virtualised Android apps, like that project on Windows currently, forget the name, or what Blackberry does).

If it stays behind in that regard, however, it will be limited to more fanatic gamers. They could still be a much larger group than people imagine though - there's certainly potential for 100 million based on that alone.

I will most likely get one to toy with PSP homebrew, PS Suite, and of course Vita games. Deciding whether to go for the 3G limited edition (one week before launch), or get a launch day 3G unit and then buy the accessories separately.

Oh yes, another RemotePlay demo/hack:

Battlefield 3:

Can't Sony market RemotePlay for video playback only but leave it enabled for playing games unofficially ?

I don't mind the lag or drop in quality for many games.
