wow thats some news... IGN is saying that SH4 will be out in 2004 with a male character, "updated look" (pleeeease not cell shaded   ) and some more extra goodies.....

and i thought the next silent hill game would be on ps3...

*imagines Silent Hill 5+ on PS3/XBox2*

Historically every SH game has come out with a gap of 2 years, so I am not surprised that SH4 will be out for PS2, though I bet on 2005.

well, unless PS3 is coming in 2006, then if i were Konami i wouldnt bother with a SH game on PS2 that close to PS3 release.. i would focus on a PS3 version, since the resources for a SH game (or any game really) for PS3 would be quite high, i suppose

London, are you kidding? With a market of (guesstimate) 100+M sold machines in 2005, they'd be idiots not to "bother" with another SH for PS2... ;)

How many PS3s will there be? Not many in comparison!

wel maybe Konami could pull it off, but i was thinking that if a small-ish dev studio is planning on releasing a title for ps2 a month before PS3 releases, then they MIGHT want to consider switching development to ps3 instead of PS2... just a thought.. although, now that i think about it, the PS2 game would be cheaper AND make the most money because of the userbase. OK ignore my second post

Are they doing SH4 with new engine in foresight of PS3.

I think they are moving away from th3 semi-fixed camera angles (in gameplay) and moving into 1st- or 'free' 3rd person views (or combination of them).

They could use the SH4 base engine for PS3 SH5, instead of the ageing SH2 (SH1) engine.
With relatively little work they'll be able to make new PS3 SH just by bumping up the model and texture complexity, adding whatever PS3 supplied graphical/sound effects, modifying the animation/physics engine and maybe bettering the character control.

i guess that would be "enough" for a first SH title on PS3... although with time, they better develop a new engine.. remember how initial games for PS2 looked, and they were nothing more than "old PS1 engines with more polys and more effects".. and try to compare them to proper engines like the ones used in ZOE2, JAK2 and newer games... big difference hey.. think the same for PS3 and there u have it...

...and we still don't have a Final Fantasy game for PS2 with an engine that'll look like it is using the consoles potential.

yeah i think the title for "slacker of the generation" should go to square. i mean, although FFX and especially Kingdon Hearts were some of the best games i have ever played, technically they have been a disappointment.... apart from certain moments... i mean FFX did shine at times, and also KD, but Konami has WOWed me a lot more this generation...

I hope Konami doesn't tire out the Silent Hill franchise before PS3 arrives :?

SH4 for PS2 might also have something to do with the Silent Hill movie set to arrive around that time.

oh god i forgot about that.....

WHY konami WHY!!!!????

dont they get it already? tie-in movies are NOT the way to go!!!!!

i mean, are these people still competing to be "the first ever WATCHABLE game-movie tie-in"???

come on, they f**ked up frikking Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, street fighter, mortal kombat (surely the most decent so far)... i mean, it's not rocket science....

Well I for one, think the Final Fantasy movie wasn’t half bad, even though I don’t care much for the games.
It had some pretty original touches, and even surprised once in a while. The voice acting was very good too.
I guess it goes to show that Squares biggest asset is probably their dramaturgical sense, and not gameplay at all.
They, if anyone could reinvent and bring the interactive movie back from the dead.
(It could be argued that they already have. Just shame about the virtual dice throwing they have put between the movie sequences :) )

oh lord... i mean, i kinda liked the movie too, got it on DVD and pop it in from time to time... but THE single biggest disappointment was the voice acting. they could have done soooo much better...
also, there are MANY people *cough*me*cough* who very much enjoy the gameplay of final fantasy games. there are some people *cough*me*cough* who have spent 140 hours on FFX and have some of the characters maxed out just for the hell of it...
it all comes down to taste i guess... for someone who enjoys PLAYING FF games, i was a bit disappointed from the movie... especially after seeing what they did with FF6 and 7, which i think are still THE BEST things Square have ever done (never liked vagrant story and never played chrono whatever its name is).... surely FFTSW looked frikkin amazing, but it very much lacked any kind of emotion. and the fact that those "virtual" actors still arent advanced enough to convey those emotions doesnt help. by contrast, a stylised character like the horny boy from ICO conveyed MUCH more emotion than the almost-photorealistic characters in FFTSW.

Well he has to be real horny to put up with those smoke monsters, evil witch mother-in-law, stupid brainless tart and all.

I don't see that so bad - this time they've picked up Christophe Gans as director. Considering Crying Freeman and Brotherhood of the Wolf I think he is a wise choice for this movie.

Yep and the crew behind the games is involved too ...

By: D. F. Smith September 17, 2003 6:06 PM PDT

Silent Hill is on its way to the silver screen, publisher Konami announced today. Producer Samuel Hadida and Davis Films have picked up the rights to the popular horror adventure series and signed director Christophe Gans, of Brotherhood of the Wolf and Crying Freeman.

"Silent Hill is a groundbreaking game with an atmosphere that has mesmerized millions of gamers all over the world - it is scary and clever," said Gans. "I am very proud to be associated with this game."

Though the announcement omits any mention of budget or scheduling details, Konami staff will apparently be involved in the film's production. Konami staff will oversee script development, assist with the design of the film's human and monstrous cast, and collaborate on soundtrack composition.

Konami's announcement also mentions that it is pursuing film deals for other videogame franchises, which naturally gives rise to speculation regarding many different possible projects. We'll keep an eye out for news of such in the near future.

True, but how many millions PSOnes there were in time of the PS2 launch, and what significant game was released for them back then, or selling well for that matter?

Most launch games sell extremely well by nature of people _having_ to buy a game (or gameS) with their system, via bundles or just need otherwise.

GT2 and FF9 significant enough for ya? :p
IIRC FF Origins is shipping for PSOne just now, so it seems the little "outdated" box still gets some attention.
