Predict: The Next Generation Console Tech

That would be fine, but we were basically told that it isn't 2TF-2.5TF that it's most likely 1-1.x TF.
So, that is what I am expecting.

Are we? We have vague rumors and insiders being equally vague, I see ancient rumors revived and Jeff Rigby's musings regurgitated and reposted as new or somehow completely un-debunked. It goes up to 3 teraflops, then back down to 1 teraflop every few days.

Who told you that?

bkilian used to work at Microsoft's own Xbox division as worked with the sound on the original Xbox.
He left recently, but it's apparent that the next xbox isn't going to have anything but a 1.x in TF performance.
He knows people on the inside.

We don't have all the details, but I trust in what he says for obvious reasons.

bkillian never said 1TF though...he never said anything but to temper outrageous expectations.

Nobody here thinks 2TF is too outrageous a proposition

I do not believe the 1-1.5TF rumors are even realistic at this point. The opportunity cost of saving $ to come out underpowered just to and hope to catch casuals instead with media features, while barely squeezing out games like Crysis 3 at 720p would be much worse than spending a bit more to make it easier on devs. Third party games are still the bread and butter and when that doesn't impress and sell, goodbye next gen.

LOL. The next step will be the Wii U being the most powerful next gen console...

Or may be he is playing with us.

Let's examine the original question I asked.....

Is the GPU inside of the final Durango dev kit going to be less than 2 TF or higher than 2 TF?

Now, lets examine the second question I asked....

This should allow you to answer without breaking NDA.

Now, lets look at his answer...

His answer says that most people are going to be disappointed due to the power regulations.
If you read between the lines it's easy to see.

So, using this 1.x is disappointing and 2.x would be happy. So, I think that pretty much is it. If Microsoft has to do this, so does Sony. Pretty much tells us that part at least.

I don't see how you can get anything more or less than that, it's obvious to me. The only people questioning it are the people who don't want to believe the truth.

Your making up things out of what he said. He doesn't put any numbers on anything, your the one who is doing so and drawing your own conclusions based on air.

I just don't think that's a smart thing to do.

But power regulations are related to "game consoles", Xbox 720 will not be only a "game console":

- Set topbox
- videogames
- applications
- more to come

Microsoft (and Sony) can bypass power regulations as easy as changing what next Xbox will be. They can even name the next Xbox as a "personal computer".

So, Bkilian who used to work with Microsoft just a few months ago and helped work with the original Xbox sound system doesn't know what he is talking about?

I find that hard to believe. I don't claim to know anything, but I know people were talking about only 2.0 to 2.5 TF and he he said that people need to have realistic expectations. So, we know just by that it's not 2.x.

It's certainly possible we could get a 1 teraflop gpu, but to argue that vague statement as concrete evidence is majorly flawed... unless there is a more detailed pm involved?

No he doesn't,he said don't compare to PC

He responded to your second question. I don't see how you get him responding to anything else when you just posted your own question and him responding to that question specifically.

Well, 3-3.5 would be high end and he wasn't talking about that and in fact nobody was. They were all talking about 2.x and he said "Don't expect a graphical powerhouse in a console".

That's pretty straight forward.

MS could go for some highly efficient 1-1.5TF new technology GPU that performs more like a 2TF current GPU, but this still gives Sony the chance to go with an off the shelf 8850, which even if further cut down and downclocked would still trounce MS's offering. The trade off could indeed be in RAM capacity, which as discussed months ago may not be worth it.

Sony will likely have the same desire to chase the casual crowd with expensive next gen motion controls, but if MS do go a bit too conservative they could capitalise on it without blowing their budget like last time. An 4-8 core jaguar + 8850 would be smaller than CELL + RSX by a long shot, it would also use less power (cheaper cooling and mainboard) and probably cost around half for the chip(s) itself. Don't include legacy processors for BW capability, Blu-ray drives are $100 cheaper now, everything else like HDD would be the same and adding 32-64GB flash wouldn't cost a lot. You'd be looking at under $400 all up. Then spend the rest on a new control scheme and sell the top end 500GB for $499 with a flash only version for $399.

There's no rumors about PS4 will use HD8000,in fact we know very little about PS4,even AMD china guy rumors just said both will be high and very close

Sony has to follow by the same laws as Microsoft. So that is totally unlikely. I know California has some new laws about low powered electronics and Europe is doing it too, so I doubt that Sony will not follow that. Sony is also losing a ton of money and they can't borrow anymore so....

If you have followed this thread at all, we have folks that want $500+ 300+ watt consoles, we have people bring up every conceivable 7xxx and 8xxx part from mobile to high end. We have people expecting a repeat of the special sauce that Xenos had without any real thought to budget or market changes.

He gave you a reasonable, yet very vague, answer, and he could have completely sidestepped your reference to "flops" and you wouldn't know it.
