Predict: The Next Generation Console Tech

Sony has to follow by the same laws as Microsoft. So that is totally unlikely. I know California has some new laws about low powered electronics and Europe is doing it too, so I doubt that Sony will not follow that. Sony is also losing a ton of money and they can't borrow anymore so....

Neither limit maximum power for a device while gaming. It's not far reaching either, I'd expect they could have a SoC like the one I described in the 120-150w range, total system power would be under 200w and idle and standby much lower than previous gen.

Even from this post i can tell you are worried...

Even those who claim PC is their next gen are worried...when its pretty much set into stone that 99% of all major games will be PC ports of console games from now on due to the increasing ability of console hardware. They are scared that their PC components will be very much underutilized in a few years time once again.

They want to experience a much higher baseline themselves, to make the PC versions look even better than they would otherwise. Its understandable to be worried.

Well it wouldn't really matter significantly in 2013/2014 but from 2015 it would and more every year after that. But I guess it would work out in the end because from 2015 Intel's processors would be as fast or faster and we could see a second golden age of pc gaming because the lowest common denominator from 2016 onwards would be consoles. If Haswell is 512GF then a couple of years later on 14nm we could probably expect more than double that performance.

As a pc gamer I'm not worried at all. Even a 1.2 tflop console would be a real world improvement of near 10x over current generation consoles. A 10x increase in base graphics from what we have today would make me very happy as a pc gamer while at the same time giving pcs plenty of chance to scale upwards from there due to the big power surplus. Hell I wouldn't even have to upgrade to maintain parity although 3d may be pushing it.

Saying that though, if the next gen is as underpowered as is currently being suggested, I don't expect a lot of AAA games running at full 1080p or 60fps. Developers will want to focus what power they have on core graphics improvements.

Now, lets look at his answer...

His answer says that most people are going to be disappointed due to the power regulations.
If you read between the lines it's easy to see.
Reading between the lines is extremely subjective. bkilian never mentioned 'most people'. His only point was that there won't be a super graphical monster like previous generations, his reasoning being power requirements (which some debate).

We've just had four pages of pretty mindless hoping and guessing and interpreting vague comments, and people being disappointed and excited for hardware we don't know yet. Why not everyone just wait until you know what the next hardware is before getting emotional about it? This thread is only to identify what the next boxes are. Emotional attachments do not belong here.

I do not think anyone in this thread is expecting a "monster" of power (3/4 TFLOPS) but new xbox coming out in late 2013 with less than 2/2,5 TFLOPS would be a flop almost a WiiU 2.0.
Tim sweeney presenting UE4 made it clear that to get some kind of results 2/2, 5 TFLOPS are the minimum.
If MS did not follow the advice of Epic, Crytek, etc ... I do not understand how they can hope to sell the next xbox.

Emotional attachments basically define this thread.

So, what you are saying is that it's time to lock this thread until we get real solid information.

No, it's time for those who can't hold technical investigations to either raise their game or get out (or be thrown out). There's still plenty of value to be had evaluating rumours and news on a logical, engineering level to determine the next-gen hardware choices.

A GTX680 in a closed box would be well more than 10x current gen consoles in real world performance.

How so when it doesn't offer 10x more performance in every area?

It's fill and texel rate are not 10x that of the current consoles, it also doesn't offer 10x the performance in other areas.

Hope still remains that PS4 will be powerhouse. We know very little about it, and even existence of dedicated GPU is unconfirmed.

I'm surprised they aren't classified as PCs. I thought this was already the case for PS360.

I know that in 2013 the European Commision will change the stand by power consumption law.

Currently house hold appliances have to have a standby power consumption of 2w or less, that is due to drop to 1w in 2013.

That could affect things in the new consoles

Theoretically speaking,
Pixel fill is 8x RSX/Xenos (32ROPs @ 1GHz vs 8ROPs @500MHz).
16x Xenos tex fill, ~10.7x RSX tex fill ( 128@1GHz vs 16/24TMUs @500 MHz)
Z-only fill is 32x Xenos/RSX (256Z-only/clk@1GHz vs 16Z-only/clk @500MHz
Triangle setup rate is 8x (4 rasterizers @ 1GHz vs 1 @500MHz)
