Playstation 3: Hardware Info and Price

Any word on UK pricing yet?
It should be a direct currency conversion of Euros, around £400 for the full BRD player variety. I imagine that doesn't look too pricey to the UK buyers who are used to costly products.

As for the Gigabit connectors, what were they going to be used for? EyeToy, internet access, and networking, right? Lose the idea of Cell networking and I guess it's there for online and EyeToy? Maybe there'll be a switch for networking+online or somesuch? Or maybe EyeToy is USB and it's there just to connect to your router? Still gigabit is excessive for anything other than the high bandwidth of Cell networking or an HD video source. Maybe it's intended for one of these? Or perhaps, it's future proofing for Korea when they get gigabit internet access :D

This must mean that RSX has been modified too.
AFAIK RSX itself isn't handling HDMI, but instead Sony are using Silicon Image chips for this - which is of course a cost...

remember PS2 cost 500euro plus back in 2000 with the release in Europe
At the same time, the USA folks only had to pay 299$ for it.

as a matter of fact, europe subsidised the usa market for 18months +-
paying almost the same for a ps3 isnt that hard to understand actually.

than again, 500 euro is lot of money .

did they actually gave EURO prices or is this just a 1 us$ to 1 euro conversion ?

these where my 2cents..

Interesting. Maybe not a modification to RSX though, just not using the built-in functionality becuase even at $3 a piece for an HDMI connector, that would cost Sony somewhere in the neighborhood of 250 million through the next 5 years or so, certainly not the best use of money for a feature with very limited utility to begin with.

No point in having more than one ethernet port either once they ditched the router functionality.

EDIT:

The loss of the gigabit switch is a bit more serious. Most people seemed to think that's where the camera would connect, but as there's only one jack at the back now, that's not very bloody likely. Personally, I always thought it made loads more sense having it hook up through a USB connector. Losing all the rear USB ports (all both of them in fact) is perhaps a bit more concerning. That means having an USB cable draping across the table when one has the eyetoy hooked up.

Well, this was the way it worked on the PS2 of course so it's hardly a change for the WORSE, but I still would have preferred it if it had at least one connector on the rear, just to keep those unsightly cables a little more hidden..

Not sure i understand your point here, whats the difference from a usability standpoint by connecting the camera to a USB port or ethernet port?

Yep, they gave Euro prices. The US market will be most affected for sure as they haven't had such prices before. For the EU market it's business as usual, except XB360 does offer a cheaper rival for once.

i remember the original xbox launched at 400 euro (or more , i dont remember the exact price) and they lowered there price in just a few months time to 299euro and offered a few games to the initial buyers as compensation...

ps3 offered at 500-600 us$ ... hm wonder what the next generation will cost
If the high pricepoint is a good move , i'm sure the next gen XBOX and ps3 will get even higher in price.. . If it turns out a disaster, well they would have learned a
nice lesson there.

on the positive side, they can lower their price more in sequenses in time :)

After all the talk about 1080p being the true HD resolution for Blu-Ray movies, if you get the $500 SKU you can't get 1080p output. Unless there is some esoteric work around I'm not aware of.

Just making sure you are aware but component video can carry the full 1080p output.

That should include VAT. I'm pretty sure in any European country, prices quoted to consumers must include VAT, unless you're selling to a business?

Yep. It's a 10% mark-up if you're calculating with the German VAT (16%). Less in countries with higher VAT. It's not that bad.

€469, IIRC. Extremely overpriced and I'm glad the customers didn't bite and that POS tanked badly in Europe. MS also thought that €69 would be an acceptable price for a game...

IIRC, in the US the Xbox went for $399 and $59 per game.

I guess they learned their lesson, the Xbox360 is reasonably priced.

ugh. At those prices the chances of me buying one at launch just became incredibly remote. I think ill be waiting (a long, long time) for $299. If there is some untouchable killer app I might buy earlier, but we probably wont see that until the 2nd generation of games at least.

Are you sure? I was under the impression component could only go up to 1080i
Yes I'm sure. There is plenty of bandwidth in the analog component connection to carry 1080p video. In fact if you have a CRT based HDTV component cables typically give a much better picture than HDMI since the TV itself is an analog based display. DLP, LCD and the like prefer HDMI since they are pixel based digital displays.

The only display that is really digital is DLP, the others are still analog ;)
